Blair first came to Penn as a graduate student where she earned her Masters in Higher Education Management in 2010. She joined Penn's undergraduate admissions staff in 2008. She's been at Wharton's since 2012 and became Director of Admissions in 2017. She was last on Admissions Straight Talk just under two years ago. And what a two years it's been. Let's catch up on life and admissions at Wharton.  Blair, welcome back to Admissions Straight Talk. Can you just start by providing a basic overview of the Wharton MBA program for listeners who may not be that familiar with it, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [1:56] Absolutely. It's difficult to put Wharton into five to seven sentences, but I will try. So, Wharton was the first business school in the United States, established in 1881. Wharton's first MBA class was in 1921 so this year it was actually the 100th class that Dean Erika James welcomed in August, which was really, really exciting. It is a perfect bookend in terms of 100 years of classes for me that this year's class is more than 50% women, which I'm sure we'll talk about. But it just feels like this beautiful bow. One hundred years, 50% women. That's great. What I think makes the Wharton education distinct is that it's very hands-on. It's very practical. It's very tactile. You're never going to look at a problem from 30-feet away. You're going to get right into the guts of it and try to figure it out. And that's what we teach because that's what we believe that businesses need. We're known for innovation across many disciplines. We are certainly known for finance, and we're really proud of that reputation. 100 years of the best finance education you can get, but we are many other things, and I think that's important for people to understand. There are two distinguishing centers that I really want to mention: The Stevens Center for Innovation in Finance, which is financial technology and the Harris Center for Alternative Investments, which is VC, hedge funds, and a hub for all of those research projects, corporations, communities, students, and businesses. These are both at Wharton, which is really exciting. I'd love for your listeners to check out the Stevens Center at Wharton or the Harris Center at Wharton.  The last thing I'll say that I think is a differentiator is we're a pretty large program, 864 students, but we really work hard to make sure that it is a robust social experience. Business is a team sport. It's not a solo sport. You have to meet and interact with your classmates, and we stop at nothing to make sure that that happens.  So to summarize, I would say: first in its class, started in 1881, finance, tactile, practical, and then a robust social life as well. She returned to Darden in 2017. In all her positions and roles in MBA admissions, Dawna is known for running an applicant-friendly admissions process while attracting great candidates to the schools that she has been associated with. Dawna, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk and congratulations again on your new title. Can we start with a basic overview of the Darden MBA program for listeners who are not that familiar with it, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:18] Sure, absolutely. I'm happy to give an overview of Darden. Darden is a two-year, full-time, general management program. Assuming we're primarily talking about the full-time format, we do offer other formats as well, but I will focus on the full-time format. I will say one of the most distinctive elements of Darden is that it is primarily a case method school. Over the years, our faculty has revisited the curriculum and asked whether a case method is the most relevant teaching method. To date, since the school was founded in the 1950s, they continue to commit to the case method.  The philosophy is that the best way to learn how to make business decisions is to start making them. At Darden, we're trying to cultivate a variety of skills, leadership skills, team skills -- it's a general management program. So people are going to get accounting skills, financial skills, global skills, but one of the most relevant skills that we're trying to cultivate are strong business decision-making skills. The philosophy is that the best way to start to cultivate those skills is to practice. Students do over 500 cases while they're at Darden. So there's a lot of practice. It's very practical and relevant. One of the benefits of the case method that a lot of people don't know about is that it exposes you to a lot of industries. So for students who are coming to Darden, a lot of people know that they want to transition into a business career, but they may not know what functional area. Through the general management program, you're going to get a lot of exposure to all the functional areas of business like accounting and economics and finance. But because it's a case method school, every case is set within an industry. So in your two years at Darden, a student is going to get exposed to almost 70 different industries. Even if you don't go into energy, knowing a little bit about energy may be really valuable to you if you have a client in the future, who's from the energy industry. You're going to have cases from transportation, hospitality, financial services, consulting, startups, petrochemical companies. I love the phrase, “We don't know what we don't know.”

With a focus on interprofessionalism, the Chicago Medical School is one of five graduate schools in healthcare at Rosalind Franklin University of Chicago. It also has one of the larger MD programs in the United States, and I'm delighted to have on Admissions Straight Talk, Dr. Michael Ellison, Associate Dean for Admissions at Chicago Medical School. Dr. Ellison earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the Roosevelt University of Chicago. He has worked in higher education and specifically in medical school admissions and administration for decades. Dr. Ellison, welcome to Admission Straight Talk. Can you give us an overview of the Chicago Medical School program, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:13] Well, Chicago Medical School is a commuter based medical school. We serve a variety of patient populations, from those who are from rural communities, urban settings, suburban settings, individuals who may be coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, all the way to those people who may have more privilege and resources. We really want to make sure that we are training physicians who are going to have a broad-based education. Those individuals will have opportunities and experience with treating a wide variety of patient populations and individuals who may be coming from various backgrounds. Rosalind Franklin seems very focused on interprofessionalism and the stated vision is “To be the premier interprofessional health sciences university.” Could you define or describe interprofessionalism? How does it manifest itself in the medical school curriculum? [3:01] Well, we realize that to provide the best patient care, it takes a team approach and the physician is one part of the team, but the nurses and the pharmacist and the other health science individuals who are working as a part of that team help to provide the best patient care and to improve those patient outcomes. A part of what we do here at Chicago Medical School is to incorporate these experiences in what we do as it relates to students from the various programs taking similar classes, working on similar cases. We look at how they would assist each other in those healthcare settings and how important those roles are in helping to improve the outcomes of the patient. You will see our students interfacing in some of the classes that they take together. He is also the Chief Booth Officer for PhotoFox Photo Booth.  My first burning question is, do you like coffee? [1:53] I do. I made myself an iced coffee for the occasion. You were at Deloitte before you went to Stanford GSB and you're now again at Deloitte. Did you intend to return to Deloitte after your MBA as you've done? [2:04] “Intend” might be too strong of a word. I knew it was a strong option, and it was one that I was excited to have. I was sponsored to go to school. I cared to come back, but I also wanted to explore some other careers just because I'd been at Deloitte for four years already. And there was a lot out there. I think I had a little bit of a wanderlust career-wise. So I did some poking around in venture capital, in mid-stage startup and then entrepreneurialism which was a list of three things that I came up with that I thought would allow me to maybe be financially equivalent but still explore something new. I started working my way through that list. For whatever reason, I never really got a lot of momentum on starting my own thing. I realized after a couple of coffee chats actually that venture capital probably wouldn't be something for me. And I interned at a mid-stage, tech startup and had a great time, but it didn't really work out for my career perspective. There wasn't necessarily a path there. When I got to my second year, Deloitte made the official offer to return, and it felt like the best thing at the time for me. Has it worked out for you? [3:20] It has. Deloitte is a good company. They've got great benefits. I'm currently actually on paternity leave. We had our first son, Jackson, who is six months old. My wife works for a company called Snowflake, and they updated their policy to six months so she had a bunch of time off. Anyways, long story short, now I get months 6-10 off with Jackson which I'm really excited about. Going back to consulting, for me, I think there was the professional benefit of getting to manage people soon and to continue developing some of the core skills. But I think there was also the personal element of it that I knew I'd have that benefit available to me of good paternity leave, and I'd be able to go to where I want to in the country so it was more than just a professional decision. Let's turn to your Stanford experience. What did you enjoy most while you were a student at Stanford GSB? [4:19] I think it was the freedom to choose every single day. As I went into school and reflected on life growing up through school, the goal was always me getting better and pursuing an interest. That's the mandate of educational institutions. Caleb started his higher ed journey at Baylor University where he earned his Bachelor's of Computer Information Systems and Human Performance, as well as a Master's in Educational Administration. He began working in pre-health advising at Baylor in 2002 and continued at UT Austin and SMU before becoming Admissions Director of Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Programs at Temple in 2018.  How did you get so involved in pre-health advising with your background in computer science and human performance? [2:14] I wanted to actually be a coach when I was in college, and you had to pick a teaching discipline. So, I thought, "Well, I can teach computers. I enjoy computers." But my first job in college was as a student worker in a health professions advising office in which I was introduced to what life as a premed was like, which was very different from the life that I was leading as an undergraduate student. Through it and watching the journey, I just fell in love with working with health professions students and helping them go on and achieve their dreams and goals of going on to things like dental school, medical school and in a sense, being a coach along the way. So, I didn't deviate too far from the coaching aspect of things, just different sports, so to speak. Can you give an overview of the post-baccalaureate options at Temple University? [3:19] Sure. So first of all, I'll start with the two primary pathways students can take. One pathway is for students that are career changers. So, students that might have been teachers or lawyers or rabbis - all kinds of professions who decided they wanted to go back to school, pick up their prerequisite courses and go to professional school. We have another pathway that is for students that would like to enhance their academic credentials. These are typically people that were maybe premed as an undergrad, and this is kind of the typical postbac student that most people think of. They want to go to a postbac program to try to improve their science grades as an undergrad. That's kind of the basics, but as you mentioned, we have all these other different and more highly specialized programs within that framework. We help students of course go to medical school, dental programs. We have a pre-dental program, pre-pharmacy, and pre-podiatry tracks as well. Our three newest tracks are PT, PA, and DMI, which is Diagnostic Medical Imaging. It would be someone who had an undergraduate degree, but wants to go onto a DMI program and needs to just get some remaining pre-reqs and wants to take that pathway on to a DMI program.

Shari earned her bachelor's at Dartmouth and her MBA at Harvard. She worked with several lead companies and in 2009 became Director of Recruitment for the Peace Corps. In 2012, she returned to the MBA world when she became the Associate Dean of MBA Admissions for Georgetown McDonough, which I think is around the time that we met. Then she joined Duke Fuqua as Associate Dean of Admissions in October 2017. Shari, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. Can you give an overview of the MBA program at Duke focusing on its rather distinctive structure? [2:21] Sure. Absolutely. I think our curriculum is a huge asset in helping students really tailor their MBA to their specific needs and interests as they're going through the two year program. The curriculum is designed to allow students to have breadth in terms of the business fundamentals and the leadership components through the core as well as deeper specializations should they be interested with our concentrations. We have 16 concentrations, as well as certificates and our second degree which is the MSTeM, the Master's of Management Studies and Technology Management certificate. Each of those concentrations and certificates really allows students to customize their experience based on their career interests, or their own personal interests. Our students start their first month in the program, all in a course called the Summer Institute, and we really revamped that last year. It's a hands-on program, three courses that really emphasize how to think through business challenges critically and ethically, how to take ownership of your work, even if you're working for somebody else, and how to find ways to bring common purpose to a team as you're working together. This particular set of courses really prepares them for the next two years, it's a level setting course. The remainder of the academic year is broken down into four, six-weeks terms. Each term meets twice a week for two hours and 15 minutes. One thing that is unique to us is that we actually don't have classes on Wednesdays as opposed to Fridays like some schools. That really enables our students to stay together over the weekend to create community and to really be connected even more.  Another thing that's unique is the way in which we structure our first-year leadership teams. They're four to five person teams, they are called consequential leadership teams or C-Lead teams for short. And the nice thing is they're actually managed or mentored by second-year students who are selected to be our Center for Leadership & Ethics fellows. So first-year students off the bat get peer mentored and managed by second-year students,

Esther is also the founder of Speak More Clearly, both the site and the YouTube channel, and I think she's the first guest we have had from down under, also known as Australia.  How did you get into the accent reduction field? [1:58] I'm a speech and language pathologist. I work with children who have speech and language problems, but I also work with adults who feel they can't be clear. Another speech pathologist and I started doing groups for people face to face in our clinic a long time ago, because in Australia, like in America, there are many people who have second languages. They've come from other places. In fact, in Australia, we have over 400 other languages that other people speak. So we started this for people who were professionals, working either on the phone or other sorts of professions - lawyers, whatever. And they were feeling not confident and not good about the fact that they couldn't be understood. People had to keep asking them to repeat themselves, et cetera, which is very frustrating actually. And so we started those at a very small level and then more and more people were coming along. She pulled out, she went on to do something else, and I just continued on. The more people we had, then we realized we had to make some courses. We originally just had audio courses, but now we have video and audio, the whole shebang, online. And that's how I started, and I got more and more interested in it as I went along.  I assume at this point you're mostly working with adults, no longer with children, right? [3:57] Oh no, I still do have a children case load. What causes accents? [4:09] Oh, I think this is a great question. When we're very, very young, and we start to learn language, we actually hear all the sounds that there are to make. When we babble, we babble all the sounds. All different sounds, even the ‘cha’ and ‘schm’, and any other sounds that are not in our native languages. And slowly over time, as we're learning our native language or languages, we diminish our auditory acuity for all those other sounds and only focus on the sounds that are in our native language or languages. At the same time, what we're doing is learning to move our mouth in a certain way. We organize our articulators in a certain way to only use those sounds as well, because before when we're babbling, we're saying all sorts of odd sounds that are not in our language. Slowly that takes over, and we no longer use all those other sounds and therefore we have an American accent in English, or an Australian accent in English, or whatever language we're speaking. Dr. Yee, can you give an overview of Duke Medical's highly distinctive curriculum? [2:11] We've had this curriculum in place for a number of years, and the goal is to produce leaders in medicine and also to help the applicant and the student, eventually, understand the link between clinical medicine and research, and how both of these things help to promote, advance, and improve medical practice. Our curriculum is changing right now, and we're putting in new elements in what we call ”patient first.” I think all the applicants and med students out there have to understand that the patient is the center of your universe and everything you do has to be done to improve their well-being. So we're shifting a lot of our thinking now, and actually using the immersion of the med students into the first year, from day one so you're seeing patients from day one. We're then integrating a lot of the biomedical concepts with that. So you'll have early clinical exposure, and you'll have a lot of the foundations within that first year. That first year is still your basic science year, but with a lot of clinical elements integrated in. The second year is still your clinical year and then the third year is where we actually have you do research or get an advanced degree. That's where you get a chance to choose your own direction and get to pursue your passions. If you think about it, there are very limited opportunities for you to do that within med schools in the United States. So this is really a chance to do what you want to do and to utilize everything that you've done in the past to pursue what you're passionate about and that's kind of how things are set up over here. If you're having all of your early clinical exposure and also doing the entire didactic portion in your first year (which many medical schools take two years to do) how do you fit it all in? [4:02]

Lisa, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk and congratulations on your recent promotion to Assistant Dean. Stern has a pretty impressive menu of MBA options. I think that's part of its innovative nature, can you give an overview of the different options? [2:43] Absolutely. Thank you for asking. So you're right, Stern does have a large portfolio of MBA program options available to prospective students. It runs the gamut from executive MBA, including a TRIUM program that partners with two schools on the other side of the globe to give a global experience to our students, as well as a part-time MBA program. And the areas that fall under my purview are the full-time MBA programs, which include the two year full-time MBA as well as two focused MBA programs, one in tech and one in fashion and luxury. Can you give an overview of the full-time program focusing on the more distinctive elements? [3:49] So the two-year, full-time MBA program is really geared towards helping folks make a transition in their career and helping elevate them to that next phase of their professional life. For some folks it's a career pivot, and then for others, it's folks that are looking to build out a skill set so that they can continue to move up the proverbial ladder, as I'm sure you've seen as you're connecting with prospective students.  The thing that I love about Stern is the experiential components of the program: the fact that the students have the opportunity to put into action what they're learning in the classroom with real problems and providing solutions for real organizations. Amy and Pat, Welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. Can you give an overview of the full-time program focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:36] Amy: The Tuck program starts with an expanded orientation for students to establish a firm foundation so they can jump into a very rigorous academic experience during their time at Tuck. It was several years ago when we redesigned the orientation program to now be called Tuck Launch and there are several components of that: integrated programming in Tuck Launch, experiential learning, as well as very specific opportunities for reflection. We believe this sets a stronger foundation as people jump into the core curriculum. The core curriculum at Tuck begins and weaves its way through the first year at Tuck with expanded fall term opportunities and new data analytics courses. We made some changes to the winter term to try to optimize student academics as well as recruiting, and we've gotten some very positive feedback on that. When students head into the spring term of the first-year, a distinct element of the Tuck experience is the first-year project. Many MBA programs will have a capstone project in their first year. The uniqueness of Tuck is that students have total choice of the team that they want to work with and the project that they want to work on. It could be something consulting, non-profit focused, entrepreneurial where you'd present to investors at the end of the project. Sometimes students are working with alumni, local projects, global projects - the sky's the limit. At that particular point in the curriculum, students definitely have the relationships built and have met all of their classmates and start to bring teams together. It’s a great opportunity to apply the skills that students learned throughout the first-year core.  Then heading into the second-year curriculum, it is all elective-based with incredible opportunities for experiential learning, working with faculty in very small scale electives. Or, of course, some of our larger, more popular electives like investments and negotiations, some leadership and communications courses. And the list goes on. The Tuck MBA is also a STEM-designated MBA program.

The daughter of immigrants, Julie admittedly didn't excel in high school. However, using a passion project, she was able to secure acceptance first to USC as an undergrad, and then attended Harvard's Graduate School of Education where she earned her Master's in Education in 2015. She founded Julie Kim Consulting, an undergraduate admission consultancy in 2015 and has grown it ever since. Julie, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. One question that I had right off the bat was, your undergrad degree was in Business Administration and Marketing. Why the pivot to Education for the Master's? Or was that your plan all along? [1:25] That was my plan all along. As you know, there's not a lot of undergraduate majors that students could take advantage of. At USC in particular, they didn't offer an education major but said they allowed a minor. I thought, well, I want to get into business one day and I feel like this is such an applicable skill set in all industries so that's where I started. Even though I was majoring in business, I continued to participate in education related internships and volunteer work and research. How did you know that you wanted to do education all along? [2:22] I always loved teaching. I remember when I was in third grade, I sat my little brother down and I was like, “I'm going to teach you math.” And he was like, “Okay”, because we're only two years apart. So I always loved teaching, and even with my parents, I would always be explaining to them what's going on in the education world and what is the difference between SAT and ACT. I think I was kind of born with this love for education. You attended USC and majored in Business and Marketing, and then you chose to go to Harvard. Did you take some time off in between, or did you go straight? [3:37] I took a year off to prepare for the graduate admissions process. So a year later. How did you prepare for Harvard? [3:57] Studying for the GRE exams, they're so hard. I was actually at the same time taking another master's program through USC teacher education. I was taking classes at USC and then also studying for GREs and participating in a few research opportunities at USC. Oh, and I was also tutoring on the side to make side income. So just doing a lot of teaching, learning a lot about education during that time. To what do you attribute your acceptance to Harvard? [4:33] I really think my passion is what got me into Harvard. Not just saying that I'm passionate about education, but sharing my vulnerable story. I wasn't trying to show Harvard that I knew everything and that I am this perfect person. Instead I really conveyed where I come from as an immigrant daughter and how I didn't have some resources, but I still made it work. And that vulnerability and authenticity, I think that really made the difference because to be honest,

She founded City Test Prep, a hybrid test preparation company providing academic mastery, test taking strategy and techniques in holistic and mindful test taking.  Given your background in the arts and history, how on earth did you get involved in test prep? [2:26] It started when I was at University of Michigan. I was in the Fine Arts program and felt that I wanted to stay on to really take advantage of the university. I could have either gotten a double major or I could have stayed on to get a Master's degree and be in the PhD program and thought, "Let me apply to PhD programs," but to do that I needed to take a test prep course in order to take the GRE. And I did, I took the Princeton Review and felt like, "Oh, this is really interesting. This is really fun. I can do this too." So I started working for Princeton Review and I saw once I started teaching how the work that I did as an artist, which is so much about being in the zone and being present and really allowing yourself to be just so fully immersed in the now so that you can produce what it is that you're trying to express, was really relevant to students who were learning a lot of the material. So I started to bridge these worlds between the fine arts and being in the zone, and the students I was teaching in test prep. How do you define mindfulness? What role does mindfulness play in effective test prep? [3:42] Right, it's a very popular term right now, everyone is talking about mindfulness. Mindfulness is a mental state that is achieved to be in the present moment. It’s a practice of being in the present moment. When you're in the moment, it doesn't negate that there's things that come into your mind. It’s being aware of the things that come into your mind whether it's thinking about what came before or what came after or what your feelings are about whatever it is, whatever bodily sensations that come up. It’s acknowledging that those things come into play, but that at all times you have the practice and presence of acknowledging it but then coming back to the moment. The practice itself allows you to be in the moment even when you're not actually in a mindful meditation.

In 2008, she became Assistant Dean and Director of MBA Admissions at Georgetown's McDonough School, where she served for four years and which is where I think I first had the pleasure of meeting Kelly. She then returned to Pittsburgh and became Executive Director of Masters Admissions at CMU Tepper, and has been working in that capacity for the last almost nine years. Kelly, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. How many master's programs are you overseeing and what are they? [1:40] We have our MBA program in three different formats: the Full-Time two-year program, our Part-Time Online Hybrid program, and our Part-Time Flex MBA. In addition, we have the MS in Product Management and then MS in Business Analytics. We will be launching a couple of master’s programs in the near future. So keep an eye out for that information. What is the difference between the three MBA programs? [2:15] So the Part-Time Online Hybrid is our online program; there is an in-person component to it which is why it’s hybrid. The way that it works is the part-time students will come to campus about every six and a half, seven weeks between mini semesters where they'll do a weekend together on campus. The Part-Time Flex was our traditional Pittsburgh-based, part-time program. The really cool thing now is that our part-time students in both programs will spend the first year together in that Part-Time Online Hybrid format, giving flexibility to both groups of students, and then the Part-Time Flex students from the Pittsburgh region can choose to take more traditional evening classes if they'd like, or they can continue on the Online Hybrid format. Can you give an overview of the CMU Tepper full-time MBA programs, focusing on the more distinctive elements? [3:24] Absolutely. It’s hard not to bring in the part-time options when we're talking about the full-time program, because in fact they are the same MBA taught by the same faculty. And one of the few MBA programs that allow students to transfer between programs after year one. For our MBAs, what really sets Tepper apart is the combination of leadership development and analytics skills that the students get in the program. If we first talk about analytics within the core of our program, which is a fairly robust core, you will see that in addition to the typical business classes, we've got three specific classes that focus on developing those analytical skills. It's a probability and statistics course and optimization course, and a statistical decision-making course where students will learn optimization, modeling skills,
