I had Bruce Hartman on today, which was so much fun. He&apos;s a natural, gregarious, happy individual, and he&apos;s always been that way. I&apos;ve known him for 20 plus years and any time I&apos;ve ever seen him at a show (which is usually where I see him)  he&apos;s always laughing and giggling and just having a great time. You see, Bruce absolutely loves art and is a very knowledgeable former art professional having just retired after 30 years as Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.At first glance, you may get the impression that contemporary art was Bruce&apos;s main focus at the museum, but don&apos;t let that fool you. He knows an incredible amount on the subject of Native American art. His father and mother collected prehistoric and then historic Indian art, which got Bruce&apos;s artistic entanglement going very early in life, resulting in him becoming one of the foremost authorities on Native American paintings, from both historic to contemporary - as well as Zuni fetishes.It was a longer interview than normal, not because of any particular reason other than Bruce is such an interesting individual. I just couldn&apos;t stop listening and, you know, those are the best interviews as far as I&apos;m concerned. As a result, this podcast will be split into two parts. I had Museum Director James Burns on today. James is an interesting guy because he&apos;s done so many things. He is a curator, a director, an individual who has always loved history and art. It&apos;s a fun ride because we get to see what it takes to get in that world, to be in the world of being an executive director for a museum.You can tell from his story that it&apos;s not easy. He&apos;s gone through many different ideations and iterations of who he is and what he is to finally get to the pinnacle of his career. It&apos;s a wonderful thing to do, to be able to actually find your way in life, to do what you want to do. He&apos;s going to be the new director of Western Spirit: Scottsdale&apos;s Museum of the West, taking over for Mike Fox on October 16th. It&apos;s a big job. There&apos;s a lot to do and there are a lot of moving parts.  We got to talk quite a bit about his new position as well as the opening that they&apos;ll be having on October 16th.I&apos;ve known James for 20 years, as he pointed out during the interview, and have followed his career closely. As a fan of what he&apos;s done for the museums that have had the privilege of having him on staff, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, he is going to do great things for Scottsdales&apos; premier art museum.

I had Andy Nettle on the podcast today. He is the owner of Back of Beyond Books in Moab, Utah; I met Andy when I was in Moab the summer hiking the Canyonlands and Arches National Monument. Moab is amazing - both geographically and archeologically. There are so many unique early petroglyphs and pictographs from all time frames. Signs of human civilization ranging from 4000 years ago, Barrier Canyon people all the way up to Pueblo and Ute artwork only a century old. It&apos;s just a special area to spend time and get back to nature.If you happen to find yourself in Moab, there’s a good chance you’re going to come across one of the best bookstores I&apos;ve ever been into - Back of Beyond Books. Andy Nettell is focused on antiquarian books of all types, especially Western/Native American books with an emphasis on nature.Andy was a ranger for the National Park Service for 15 years. So he really understands the naturalist sensibility that many people visit Moab for. It&apos;s a fun ride to listen to how someone can go from being a park ranger to owning a music store, then a successful bookstore. He clearly has a lot of the skill sets that are needed to do this, including business sense, but also love and a passion for education and preservation.I think you&apos;ll enjoy this podcast if you are an enjoyer of nature or books. If nothing else, just learning about the antiquarian book business was extremely interesting to me. I do buy and sell old/rare books on occasion, but it&apos;s definitely not my specialty. Andy however is a specialist and hearing his story and about his love for antiquarian books was very enlightening.

I had Erin Hanson on today. She&apos;s a very interesting person and I&apos;ve always been a big fan of her work. In fact, I represent her work. I don&apos;t get a lot because she has her own galleries, but I do get some great things occasionally.She is a unique human being in many, many respects. She&apos;s not only extremely talented ​as an artist, but she has the same skill set when it comes to business and marketing. Some people might go, “well, you know, that&apos;s really not part of the art world,” but it&apos;s a critically important part of the art world. You see, Erin is very driven. When you have somebody who&apos;s driven like she is, both as a creative and as a business person, it makes for somebody who&apos;s successful. Clearly, Erin is a successful individual, not only in the way that she paints but also in the way she&apos;s able to sell her artwork.We also had a nice discussion towards the end on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) which is a new way of selling art and is going to be an important part of the art market in the future. There&apos;s just no doubt about it. Especially western, native, or contemporary western art. I don&apos;t think it&apos;s something the majority of people would understand just yet, but it&apos;s coming folks. So it&apos;s a fun podcast for me because I love to talk about the business of art as well as just, you know, looking at art and talking to creative people. She understands the business of art and where e the market is heading.(Sometime in the near future, I will be having guests on the podcast to talk about blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens, because the next generation is going to be buying more at more art on digital platforms than off of physical gallery walls. Today&apos;s podcast is a special one because I&apos;m actually the one who&apos;s being interviewed and I&apos;m not going to lie, it&apos;s kind of different to be on the other side of the mic, so to speak.This is for Eric Rhoads&apos; program Plein Air Podcast (which is a wonderful podcast by the way), having done over 200 interviews and it&apos;s a historically artist-centric podcast so for me to be on it was really quite an honor. Eric wanted to get a sense of what it was like from my end, handling artists, how a dealer thinks and how I approach the art business as a whole. Ed Mell came by the studio today and I was thrilled to be able to record a 2-part podcast with him. Honestly, I&apos;ve been trying to get Ed on the podcast for three whole years. I&apos;ve had so many people on Art Dealer Diaries talk about Ed Mell in their own podcasts... I think it&apos;s probably up to about a dozen people now. It&apos;s just one of those things, you know? It&apos;s hard to get together sometimes especially when a pandemic gets in the way. Out of all the podcasts I’ve done recently, Ed’s was a podcast I really wanted to do in person. I&apos;ve known him for 25+ years and for me just being able to sit across the desk from him and have a wonderful discussion about his life, all of his accomplishments, the people that have influenced him throughout his life and made him who he is and what he is, was a gift for me. He&apos;s just such an interesting guy, definitely not the type of person that you get to meet every day.  Ed’s artwork is really important to me and to many, many other people as well. I collect his artwork and have since I&apos;ve represented him. I personally own numerous Ed Mell works of art including his oil paintings, bronze sculptures, lithographs, and display them in my home. In the second part (Epi. 153), we go into a bit more detail about the people that influenced him and the types of things he&apos;s doing these days.
