TAHLIA BORG from the Adelaide, South Australian band 'Teenage Joans' joins me this week in The Engine Room to discuss her musical journey which began when she was 8 years old. Tahlia played in various school bands prior to 'Teenage Joans' which is her first working band. 'Teenage Joans' formed in 2018, and are an indie rock, pop, punk rock, rock duo, self-describing their sound as "juice-box punk-pop", comprising of vocalist and drummer Tahlia Borg and vocalist and guitarist Cahli Blakers. The duo rose to prominence with their debut single "By the Way". 'Teenage Jones' was voted "South Australian Best Live Act" in the 2019 National Live Music Awards. They placed first in South Australia's "Heaps Good 50" countdown, which is run by local station play/pause/play in both 2019 & 2020, and they took out first place in triple j's Unearthed High in 2020, with their second single "Three Leaf Clover", which was released in March 2020. Not only does this two-piece powerhouse play beautifully crafted songs that have audiences singing along the first time they hear them, but the songs are as real and important as they are unapologetic. Going from strength to strength, 'Teenage Joans' have already shared stages with the likes of 'Ruby Fields', 'The Hard Aches', 'Clowns' and 'Bec Stevens', just to name a few. In their huge debut year, 'Teenage Joans' were invited to perform at Laneway Festival 2019 as part of the "Girls Rock!" Showcase, and were a highlight performance at A Day Of Clarity 2019. S2 E53 TAHLIA BORG, Drummer for 'Teenage Joans' which is an indie rock, pop, punk rock, South Australian rock band, who won Triple J's 2020 Unearthed High competition with single "Three Leaf Clover".

Edward Pollard (Eddie) joins me in 'The Engine Room' to discuss his musical journey which begun when he was in primary school. Ed fell in love with the drums after watching a school friend play. He jammed with various friends over the years and joined his first band 'Oblong' in the early 90s. Ed met Paul Macleod (who I interviewed in season 1) while they were both working in the APY lands, they put on various shows for the community during their time there. Paul contacted Ed when he was putting together the blues band 'Holler & The Bones'. I first saw Holler & The Bones when I recorded them competing during the ARBA Memphis Blues Challenge, held at The Semaphore Workers Club in June 2018. I then met Ed and the guys after their gig at Club 5082 in August the same year, and it was after this meeting that I became involved in helping them with their Facebook page. I also attended the recording session, and a mixing session of their self-titled debut album at Twin Earth Studios in October, and ended up singing bv's and responses on a few of their songs. In June 2019 the band released their debut album and in July it reached #1 on the Australian National Radio Blues & Roots Charts. The band also competed for a third time in the ARBA Memphis Blues Challenge in June, this time they won their heat which gave them a spot in the Final which was held in front of a Sold Out crowd at The Gov in 2019, the band won the competition, and represented South Australia at the International Blues Challenge which is run by the Blues Foundation, and held on Beale Street, in Memphis Tennessee, in 2020. Currently Ed is involved in a couple of projects as well as playing drums with Adelaide band 'The Hoverchords' which is an instrumental psychedelic surf rock band. Michael Giuffreda joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. His first band was 'The Gods of Traffic Lights', and his first professional/touring band was 'Patriarchal Death Machine'. Michael is a professional musician, drummer & educator from Adelaide, South Australia, who enjoys playing Progressive Metal, Hard Rock, and Hard-Punk music. I met Mick late 2017 not long after I had launched my Band It About Facebook Page, which at the time, I had been going around to watch and record bands performing around South Australia. I got to know Mick and the band members of 'Machine Head The Australian Deep Purple Experience', when I was assisting as an admin on their Facebook page in 2018. Mick's career was built on live gigs, tours, online drum education, studio session work, recording, private teaching, clinics and workshops. He is currently the session drummer for local band 'Full Frontal Lobotomy' and will be touring with 'The Morissette Journey (A Tribute to Alanis Morissette)' next year. John Swan OAM, better known as Swanee, was born John Archibold Dixon Swan in Glasgow, Scotland in 1952, and migrated to Australia with his family in 1961. John is an Australian rock singer who started his musical career as a Drummer when he was 11, when he joined the Elizabeth Caledonian Pipe Band. When his mother remarried in the mid-1960s, he was the only child to keep the surname of his biological father. John left school aged 13 and joined his first professional band Happiness, as a drummer when he was fourteen. When he was seventeen, he enlisted in the Australian Army, and was discharged after two years of service. In early 1974 he was the drummer with The James Wright Band, moving on to Jim Keays' Southern Cross for a short time. In 1975 he joined Adelaide band Fraternity MK II replacing Bon Scott on vocals for two years. In 1977 he became the vocalist with Feather. This band had been known as Blackfeather in the early 1970s, but by 1977 no original members were left so the name was shortened. Feather recorded one single with John, "Girl Trouble", before he left in 1978 to establish himself as a solo artist. Under the name Swanee by which he was already known, he released his debut solo single "Crazy Dreams" in 1979. An album, Into the Night, and several other singles followed. In late 1981, his version of "If I Were a Carpenter" became a national hit, peaking at number 5. The single was followed by the 1982 studio album This Time It's Different that spawned another two hits, "Temporary Heartache" and "Lady What's Your Name". In 1987, he replaced Angry Anderson as lead singer of The Party Boys. John's time with the band proved to be the group's most successful period. A cover of the John Kongos song "He's Gonna Step On You Again" peaked at number 1 on the Australian charts. The band's self-titled album made the Australian top 20. He remained with the band until 1989 before going solo again. In 2015, John was announced as South Australia's Senior Australian of the Year, and in 2017, recognised for his work with various charitable organizations, he was appointed an Order of Australia Medal (OAM). Kyle Sambell has been obsessed with drumming since the age of 2 when he began tapping out beats on pillows, furniture, pots and pans, and any other surface he could find. His parent's wisely purchased their son his first drum set when he was 3 and Kyle began to teach himself how to play by watching his favorite bands and listening to their CD's. He had some lessons when he was 5 to teach him rudiments and a bit later had some more lessons to teach him how to read charts. When he was 8, his mother began to upload videos to YouTube of Kyle drumming along to hits by Blink 182, the Foo Fighters and Good Charlotte. The video of him drumming along to Green Day's "Peacemaker", shot when he was just six years old, has had more than 84,000 views.  Kyle's first serious band was 'Burnoutband' a 3-piece punk rock band, who played with bands like 'Frenzal Rhomb' at their sound check, opening for 'Hack the Main Frame', 'The Decline', 'The Lizards' and many more. They also performed at the Umbrella Festival and Eat ya Greens, both events supported by Music SA. Kyle currently plays with 'The Lizards', 'Don't Bring Stacey', 'That 90's Show', and has recently joined 'Haliday' who have recently released their debut single ‘Phase Me’, which was produced, mixed, and mastered by Lachy Pitcher at Depict Studios in Adelaide. S2 E49 KYLE SAMBELL The Engine Room Guest Drummer: The Lizards, Don't Bring Stacey, Haliday, That 90's Show, and Burnoutband

It may have taken me 6 months to finally be able to get Gary Burrows (and Pongo lol) to sit down long enough to record this interview, but it was definitely worth the wait! Gary is a legend here in South Australia, and a well respected musician Australia wide. Born and raised in Adelaide, Gary first began to play drums in the 60s. His first working band 'The Evergreens' released a single that he wrote called "Country Lane", Gary has written over 200 songs. Gary had a 2 year absence from bands when he was 20 due to the then mandatory requirements for Australian men to serve in the Army. Being a drummer meant that instead of marching every day, he got to play the snare drum that all of the soldiers marched along to. When he returned to Adelaide he joined 'Brass Carnival', this band regularly supported visiting national and international artists during the 70s including; John Farnham, Robin Jolley, Pussyfoot, Cleo Laine, Bev Harrell, and many more. The band moved to Sydney (minus the brass section), and began touring up and down the East Coast. It was during this time that Gary got to see a lot of bands perform, he really enjoyed the different music, especially The Radiators. He eventually left the band and came back to Adelaide, he then joined 'Cradle' who soon changed their name to 'The Boys'. The Boys became very popular, and it wasn't long before Gary was back on tour, this time the tours were Australia wide and they travelled on the bands own tour bus for 5 or 6 years, along with their entourage which included their roadcrew and manager. Gary scored the perfect job during this period, he became an APRA Music Consultant, and was able to combine performing and his licensing role with APRA when he was off stage. Gary remained with APRA for 33 years. Gary is the Chairman of the South Australian Chapter of 'Support Act', a Core committee member of the 'Adelaide Music Collective' (AMC), a committee member on the 'Music Industry Council' (MIC), has been inducted into both the 'SA Country Music Hall of Fame' and 'SA Music Hall of Fame', and a recipient of the SA Music Associations 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. Gary continues to work tirelessly for the music industry, and his work with the AMC and Support Act keep him very busy. In May 2020, Support Act received a Grant of $10 million from the Australian Government through the Office for The Arts, to provide crisis relief and wellbeing support to artists, crew, and music workers impacted by Covid-19. These days Gary performs with 'The Masters Apprentices' (who are performing tonight at the Arkaba Hotel), 'The Rustlers', 'The Boys', his tribute to John Lennon 'Oranges and Lennons', and can be heard every Sunday evening on 'RadioKSA' along with co-host Cheryl Lee, on their 2 hour Music Show 'Rockaholics'. Jerry Tee was surrounded by music from birth, his father Dimitris Tsitas, was the singer in the band ‘Akropolis Live’. The band performed extensively in Adelaide at weddings, panigiria, and festivals, and Jerry loved going to watch them play, always focusing on their drummer . As a young boy, Jerry Tee would practice every day, for hours, straight after school, listening to old cassette recordings of famous Greek singers. By the time he was 13, his father decided that Jerry was ready to join his band as his full-time drummer which he did, and Jerry has been performing ever since. Two years later, Jerry Tee was approached to perform with Glykeria at the Glendi Greek festival, 40,000 people turned up during the two-day festival. As he got older, Jerry started exploring other genres of music including electronic and house, this led to him being given an opportunity through his friend Rebecca, to perform in the Adelaide nightclub 'Little Red Door'. Jerry has been performing in nightclubs, venues and at major festivals and events ever since. During the Pandemic lockdown, Jerry gathered some musicians and started to livestream videos on his Facebook page, his series of live Facebook streams reached over 86,000 views worldwide! The year of the pandemic, though a hard one, turned out to be an important one for Jerry, who signed 6 major contacts with the world’s largest music brands as an official endorsed artist, Soultone Cymbals - Los Angeles USA, London Drumstico Co - United Kingdom, LP Percussion - New Jersey USA, Remo - California USA, Daddario Australia Drums - Melbourne, and Cympad International - Switzerland. Alex has been the recipient of many prestigious awards including ‘Australia's Best Up And Coming Drummer’ in 2012 in the intermediate category, and the Open category in 2016, The John ‘Slick’ Osborne Scholarship in 2017, the Helpmann Academy Jazz Award for Top Drums Undergraduate in 2017, the Helpmann Academy Mike Stewart Memorial Award in 2017, the Helpmann Academy Jazz Award for Top Overall Graduate in 2018 and Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz 2020, among many others.  Alexander has also had the opportunity to share the stage with several renowned performers including Ralph Nader, Hugh Sheridan, and international cabaret stars Bridget Everett and Rueben Kaye, and has performed at events such as WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe and Cabaret Festivals, and the Australia’s Ultimate Drummers Weekend. Flood has performed with renowned artists including Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Marquis Hill, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Vivian Sessoms, Kate Ceberano, Nicholas Buc, as well as performing in 20+ countries on tour in 2019. Alexander plays regularly around Adelaide in several jazz and contemporary music ensembles, including his own trio ER@SER DESCRIPTION. In 2017 Alexander completed his Bachelor of Music: Jazz Performance degree at the University of Adelaide, graduating top of his year. Alex released his debut album HEARTBEAT through Stretch Music (via Ropeadope Records) in 2020, having worked closely with his mentor, 5x Grammy nominee Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on the project. Alex is currently finishing up his sophomore album The Space Between, set to release late 2021, featuring a conglomerate of international artists.
