Kris Hansen has a dual role that may be unique in financial services. He is Chief Technical Officer of both the Canadian challenger bank Koho and the early-stage fintech investor group Portag3 Ventures, also Canada-based. These roles give him an overview of the entire fintech funding landscape. He also knows intimately, perhaps painfully, how banks actually work. Earlier in his career he was Director of Solutions Architecture for RBC, and in this role he mapped out the entire operations of a bank. He could pull out a piece of paper and diagram the workings of a bank in minutes. This insight allows him to do things differently at Koho and not be stuck, as he put it, “in the constructs of the 70s and 80s.” Listen to this episode to hear Hansen discuss the Canadian banking and fintech scene, how banks can build things differently and better, and the outlook for venture funding for today’s up and coming startups.

Naveen Jain has been using his analytical chops to solve problems for credit unions for years. The number of credit unions may have shrunk by almost 20% in the last five years, but the industry is not exactly in crisis. The most progressive institutions, Jain says, continue to grow their assets. Part of being a progressive credit union is working successfully with fintechs. Credit unions bring highly trusted relationships with members, a viable economic model and crucially, for the progressors, a willingness to adapt and change. Progressive credit unions can often make decisions faster than banks, and are therefore highly attractive partners for fintech innovators. MANTL provides a suite of products for banks and credit unions, but it's best known, COO Raj Patel says, for its account-opening software. MANTL can interface with any core and be up and running quickly to help financial institutions begin bringing in customers the only way that matters today -- through their smartphones. The crisis for banks and credit unions -- and an upcoming episode of this podcast will focus specifically on credit unions -- is that younger customers, both millennials and Gen Z, overwhelmingly choose one of the Big 4 banks -- 45% of millennials bank with one of the four, according to Patel. They do this because the big bank apps offer convenient features, not least the ability to open an account from the app. Listen to the podcast below to hear more of Patel's insights on the community banking and credit union spaces. "I believe that technology mirrors the people that build it," says Salcedo. This means you can see her all over the fintech landscape, particularly at Simple, where she built several pieces of the legendary challenger bank that launched a thousand imitators. "Technology doesn't solve problems, people solve problems," Salcedo says.  She is a firm believer in working with a diverse team, and this was one of the core tenets of Simple as well as Instnt. A diversity of viewpoints helps build products for all kinds of customers, and broadens access to financial products. She also sheds light on how banks and fintechs build products together. "I think we probably overestimated the short-term impact of fintech," says David Rasson, who is the Center of Expertise Lead for ING's Innovation Center in Belgium and the Netherlands. "But we underestimate the long-term impact." Rasson's group deals with startups in all stages, from investing to bringing them into Fintech Village, the bank's accelerator program, and helping them work on problems alongside bankers and eventually, perhaps, become part of the bank's suite of products.  Pat Valentino describes her background in banking as “long and colorful” and she certainly has done just about everything there is to do in the space. She has worked for small banks, giant banks, regulatory agencies, technology vendors, and is now Chief Relationship Officer at a consultancy, CCG Catalyst, which sponsors the Bank Fintech Fusion podcast. It's no secret that banks today need to take a cue from the fintech companies focused on customer experience, Valentino says. She discusses the appeal of the user experience that defines so much of fintech, focusing on some of the earliest disruptors, alternative lenders. Banking needs to continue looking at problems from the consumer point of view, and this is where fintech companies can play an important role. But banks still need to operate their business profitably, and this is where they in turn can help fintech partners. Fundamentally, Valentino advises that banks need to go to "back to the basics with an eye to the future."

Matt Harris is often asked about the history of fintech, and rightly so -- as one of the earliest investors in the space, he witnessed its creation more than 20 years ago. He was drawn to its complexity, and to the possibilities for better use of data. For the person on the street, fintech can be difficult to understand, explain, or predict, and this seemed to him to create a naturally defensible environment for an investor. He is now focused, naturally, on where fintech is going. In a recent two-part article in Forbes he outlined fintech's future as part of the tech stack with which new companies will be built. This is what some have called embedded fintech -- every company can be a fintech company with enablers like Finix and Plaid. In this episode one of the founding fathers of fintech discusses where financial technology has come from and where it is headed, and what that means for the banks that are fellow travelers on this journey.

 Chris Reid, executive Vice President, North America Services at Mastercard, caused quite a stir at Money20/20 in November when he dropped some sobering facts on stage. Mastercard, he said, is stopping 700,000 attacks every hour. "35% of all web traffic is fraudulent," he said. "49% of all login attempts are fraudulent." But despite these frightening numbers, Reid is upbeat about his work, and one of the things that cheers him up are the advances made by cybersecurity startups, whose participation he welcomes. Mastercard has a strong history of engagement with the startup community, having acquired a number of startups over the years, and operating its global Start Path program that helps scale startups in Mastercard's ecosystem. Reid spoke of his background in retail and the pressing need to always design financial products with security at the center.
