From slavery to Jim Crow to segregation & even now police brutality, it seems that no matter how you look at it, we as African Americans are always tied to some struggle. Even when you look at movies we are always having to overcome some type of struggle. It seems like it&apos;s gotten so bad now that it almost feels like we are only defined by our struggles & nothing more. Today we wanted to take a look at the other side of the spectrum & highlight some of the great things that we&apos;ve done over the years. After all we weren&apos;t created to just fight and resist our entire lives. Just like any other style of music, hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different artists, but it came to life  on August 11, 1973, at a birthday party in the recreation room of an apartment building in the west Bronx, New York. The specific location of that birthplace was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, and the man who presided over that historic party was the birthday girl’s brother, Clive Campbell—better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop. From that day on, Hip-Hop as we know it has changed the lives of African Americans all over the globe. Hip-Hop gave many of us voices & even painted the picture of some of the very harsh realities for many urban communities. But more importantly Hip-Hop has become a way of life since it&apos;s birth in 1973. Customers visit both to get their hairstyled or cut but also for the therapeutic experience: They chat with the stylist behind the chair about what&apos;s going on in their lives, they hear about other regular customers — and they may even catch up on a little gossip. Sadly, many of these shops around the country are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and has meant shutting off the connection that leads to the heart of the black community.Today we talk about the importance of the barbershops & hair salons in the black community. In 1967 the Queen of Soul recorded a song that become an anthem for decades. Not only was it a vocal masterpiece but she took the time to spell it out so you knew exactly where she was coming from. Let&apos;s be honest we&apos;ve all sang "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" at some point in our lives. But is wasn&apos;t just Aretha who wanted respect but one of the biggest rappers/businessmen to come out of Louisiana also demanded respect be put on his name at a radio station in 2016. No matter if you ask for it or demand it, everybody wants respect. So we felt it was only necessary to touch on some of the folks with felt are deserving of respect or even credit for their impact.
