I've been all over the spectrum of being a judgemental fundamentalist, as well as a whiskey drinking, non-religous, pharisee hater. I'll share where both become the same thing and where both fall short. Jesus gives a parable that shows a better faith than what we are not.

It's not just words that Jesus really cares about, He cares that words reveal our hearts. So how do we change our hearts?

Jesus says there's a sin we can't be forgiven for. Which is terribly troubling and raises so so so so many questions. Is not his blood more powerful than all sin? Why is there one that cannot be forgiven?  As we dive into the questions we find an answer that leads us closer to Jesus, closer to grace, and closer to humility.

Jesus encounters demons and shows authority over them. The Pharisees think that Jesus is doing this through demonic powers.  We've walked through Matthew for years and I had to come to terms with the reasons why I am prone to not want to talk about spiritual warfare or demonic possession. But with this story, it's unavoidable.  how do we have a healthy understanding of spiritual warfare and of the demonic?

Is the point of Sabbath just to take a day off? Not quite. Rather, it is said in the Bible it is a day to make Holy. But how do you make a day holy? 

Sabbath: More Than Bread

Why do we see the Ten Commandments as 9 commandments and one suggestion?  In Deuteronomy it says to observe a Sabbath because Israel is not enslaved by Egypt anymore. A Sabbath was a reminder that you are not a commodity, you are not valuable because of what you can produce, you are free! You are a human being!  Might be time to stop thinking of a Sabbath as a suggestion. Sabbath is God reminding us we're not enslaved to work, we are more than what we can produce, we are children of God.
