The raga Mod Malhar was performed by Chandrashekharji at the MEG club (Bandra East) on 13th June 2011. Chandrashekharji learnt this raga from his mentor and guide Pandit Y. M. Mahale. ModMalhar- The Raga is conceptualised and delineated by Pandit Govind Narayan Natu. It is a blend of Kamod and Malhar. The Raga is documented in the book ‘Geet Samooha’ written by Pandit Natu in 1949 and republished in 2015 along with audio CD by his disciple ‘Sujandas’ Pandit Yashwant Mahale. Shri. Chandrashekharji is accompanied on the tabla by Shri. Prafulla Athalye.

Taal Mala in Raga Durga on the Sitar by Chandrashekhar Phanse

‘PANCH SHADAJ’ is the simultaneous rendition of five pentatonic ragas employing the concept of ‘Shadaj Chalan’. Five ragas have been selected here, namely Bhupali, Madhmad Sarang, Malkauns, Durga and Dhani. Here the notes of Raga Bhupali are kept constant in the Ragas Madhmad Sarang, Malkauns, Durga and Dhani and the authenticity of the raga is maintained by shifting the Shadaj ie. Sa of these ragas. The notes of Bhupali are S R G P D (Scale D – Safed 2). In Raga Madhmad Sarang the Sa of the raga is shifted to Re of Bhupali. Thus, R G P D S of Bhupali becomes S R M P n of Raga Madhmad Sarang (Scale E - Safed 3). Similarly, the swar Ga of Bhupali becomes the Sa of Malkauns and the notes G P D S R of Bhupali become S g M d n of raga Malkauns (Scale F# - Kali 3). In Raga Durga the Sa of the raga is shifted to Pa of Bhupali and the notes P D S R G of Bhupali become S R M P D of raga Durga (Scale A - Safed 6) while in Raga Dhani the Sa is shifted to N and D S R G P of Bhupali becomes S g M P n of Raga Dhani (Scale B - Safed 7). Accordingly, the tabla and tanpura accompaniments also convey the change of scale and establish the shifted ‘Sa’ of the ragas. Raga Bhupali is performed on the Sitar by Dr. Sujata Bhat and on the Flute by Shri. Gandhar Bhalerao while the remaining Ragas are rendered by Chandrashekharji. They are accompanied by Shri. Yati Bhagwat on the Tabla and Shri. Varun Dixit on the electronic Tanpura.

Panch Shadaj- A Unique Concept By Chandrashekhar Phanse on the Sitar

Shruti Gunjan presents Ek Chatur Naar the iconic song from the film Padosan. The song is probably one of the most loved comedies of all times. But behind the fun and laughter, is one of Pancham’s most chatur creations. Though the underlying situation is very comical, the composition is drenched in Indian Classical music, both Hindustani and Carnatic. The change in the rhythm pattern to highlight the Carnatic and Hindustani moods has been done very aesthetically. There are glimpses of several raags in the tune eg. The Mukhada has Raag Jhinjhoti while the Antara has a flavour of Raag Malhar. Presence of Raag Khamaj and Tilang are also evident in the song. In this instrumental rendition of the song we have focussed on the classical music and not the comical aspect of the song. Chandrashekharji has played both the parts of Manna Dey (Mahmud) and Kishor Kumar on two different Sitars. The rhythm part is well supported by Shri. Sujit Panchal on the Tabla and Shri. Ek Chatur Naar on the Sitar by Chandrashekhar Phanse

Shruti Gunjan presents a famous composition in Raga Basant Bahar, from the film Basant Bahar (1956). This melodious composition was sung by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Manna Dey in the film. The same is presented here as a jugalbundi between the Sitar played by Shri. Chandrashekharji and the Sarangi played by Shri. Sandeep Mishra. This was performed as part of the concert 'Bhinna Shadaj' in which 7 rare ragas were performed. Basant Bahar, a Jod Raga, is a difficult and rarely performed raga as it require not only a lot of physical effort but also aesthetic sense in order to maintain balance and purity of the two ragas involved ie. Basant and Bahar. All 12 swaras are present in Raga Basant Bahar. Chandrashekharji and Sandeepji are accompanied by Shri. Shantanu Shuklaji on the tabla and Dr. Sujata Bhat and Shri. Raga Basant Mukhari is a sweet melodious morning raga.The raga is a combination of Bhairav (S r G M P d) in Poorvang and Bhairavi in Uttarang (M P d N S'). Chandrashekharji has rendered two bandishes, the first one in a rare taal called Pancham-savari characterised by 15 beats and the second in drut teentaal. Accompanying him on the sitar are Dr. Sujata Bhat and Vijay Jaganathan and Shantanu Shuklaji on the tabla. This performance is a part of the concert 'Bhinna Shadaj'
