This is our NY 2020 special, an extract from OVER THE HILL by Emily White. Moira is in her late 80's and has been stuck indoors being looked after by carers on 15-minute shifts, for as long as she can remember.  She is bored, lonely, pissed-off and longing for adventure but her daughter won't let her leave the house.  Until Rhodri, an eighteen-year-old oddball arrives to care for her full-time and together they set off on a road trip of the imagination. Writer: Emily White  Emily is an emerging screenwriter and playwright.  She originally trained as an actress at RADA before changing tack and obtaining an MA in Theatre Writing at the University of York in 2015.  In the five years since graduating she has been shortlisted and longlisted for numerous competitions including: Bolton Octagon Top Five Season, Arcola Heretic Voices, 4 Screenwriting, 4Stories, and BBC Drama Room. In 2018 she won a place on Channel 4’s 4Screenwriting Course where she developed her pilot Land of My Fathers about a Syrian refugee coming to live in a small Welsh town.  She was then selected to be part of the BBC Wales Writersroom group ‘Welsh Voices’ in 2019. Her acclaimed play, Pavilion, premiered at Theatr Clwyd in Sept-Oct 2019, directed by the Olivier award winning director Tamara Harvey and published by Faber & Faber. Her digital theatre microplay ‘Homework’ was released in October online for Wrapt Films/Open Sky Theatre, to high acclaim.   She is under commission to write another play for Theatr Clwyd and was one of six writers selected for English Touring Theatre’s Nationwide Voices Program 2020.  She also has a television serial in development with Little Door Productions.   Director: Chelsey Gillard Chelsey is the Carne Trust Associate Director at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, where she recently worked on The Snow Queen. She is also a co-founder of PowderHouse, the Company in Residence at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff. She began her voiceover career as a continuity announcer for BBC Choice, Sky Arts and as a co-announcer with Phill Jupitus for the Paramount Comedy Channel. She has narrated many TV shows and documentaries for BBC, ITV, Channel 4,, Sky Arts and Discovery, such as Horizon, Ancient Apocalypse and World’s Most Extreme. So, sit back and enjoy.    SASHAY AWAY Writer: Rhys Warrington Rhys is a writer and actor who grew up in Carmarthenshire is South West Wales and is now based in London. He trained as an actor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has worked extensively in theatre, both regionally and in the West End since he graduated in 2014. His acting credits include: ‘The Mousetrap’ (St Martin’s Theatre) 'Great Expectations’ (Vaudeville Theatre)  ‘Praxis Makes Perfect’ (NTW). As a writer his debut play BLUE  (★★★★ The Guardian) opened in January 2019 at Chapter Arts Centre. The play was produced by Chippy Lane Productions, a London based theatre company that champions Welsh work in and beyond Wales. Following BLUE Rhys has been working on a film with director Joe Stephenson (Chicken, Mckellen: Playing the Part) about the life of 70s Texan serial killer Dean Corll. Alongside this he has been working on new play ‘Fossils” with director Francesca Goodridge. Rhys is a creative associate of Chippy Lane and is published by Methuen.  Performer: Mari IzzardMari is an Actor/Writer from Bridgend, South Wales who trained at RWCMD. She loves telling stories that are full of heart and impacts social dialogue in some way. So, sit back and enjoy.  ‘The Girl in the Mirror’Written by Kelly Jones and performed by Gwendolyn Anslow Kelly is Wales based Playwright from Dagenham.  She was the winner of the BBC Drama Award in 2014. She has recently completed the Emerging Playwrights Program at The Bush Theatre. Kelly has a passion for community and social change projects, particularly with the LGBTQ community and her queer identity is very important to her work. Directed by Ioan Hefin who is based in West Wales and has worked as an actor for 34 years. Ioan’s one man show, ‘You should ask Wallace’ recently toured to Indonesia with Theatr na nOg.  During 2019, he received R&D funding to write and develop a new Welsh language theatre script. The piece is called ‘Gaea’ and explores the fragility of the human race with particular references to the ‘Gaia’ theory. The development work is ongoing!Ioan is currently working on taking the one man show ‘You should ask Wallace’ to Indonesia with Theatr na nOg and has recently received R&D funding to, as a writer and director  to explore a new Welsh language theatre script that is aimed at a young, contemporary audience. That piece is called ‘Gaea’ and it will hopefully have a very feisty and contemporary energy. Gwendolyn is an European actor based in Cardiff, Gwen started their acting career in Film & TV, The Italian Key(2011), Le Sorelle Karamazov (2015). After becoming a BA Acting graduate Gwen found Inclusive theatre, working with and for Hijinx Theatre with neurodivergent actors whilst continuing to work as an actor, performer and Voice over artist themselves. So, sit back and enjoy. 'EVO’Written and performed by Writer / Actress Faebian Averies  Faebian is an actor who turned her hand to writing in 2018, becoming a member of WFW at the end of the year. Her debut play ‘Detention’ had sell-out runs in both Cardiff and London, achieving a 5* review on opening night and has since been picked up by a theatre company in residence in Croydon and is enjoying great audience and critical feedback.  A section of Faebian’s one woman show ‘Two Flats on Clifton Street’ was selected to be performed at Chippy Lane’s ‘Who Run the World?’ event. It gained interest from industry professionals and in summer 2019 Faebian was selected to be part of a year long development scheme with BBC Writersroom Wales. She is also a member of Chippy Lane's Welsh Female Writers Group Directed by Luke Hereford. Luke trained as a performer at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She is currently Chippy Lane Productions’ Writing Apprentice, working on new musical Toy Mic Trev by award-winning writer Alan Harris. Her first full-length play, Existential Fish and Dread, played at The Bread and Roses Theatre to 4- and 4.5-star reviews in 2019. Her previous theatre credits include short plays How Loan Can You Go? (Words in Progress) at the Pleasance Islington, and Vera Jones (Who Run the World?) at the Old Red Lion. Her first short film screenplay, Falling Apart at the Seams, was awarded third place in the Women Over Fifty Film Festival screenwriting competition.    PERFORMER: ELIAN WEST  Elian is a Welsh actress and trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts studying Actor Musicianship and graduated in 2017. Since graduating, Elian her performance credits have included; Celia in Worlds Apart In War (Theatr Clwyd), Alice in Alice In Wonderland (Sherman Theatre), Anna in The Yalta Game (Sherman Theatre), Princess Susie in Sleeping Beauty: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto (Theatr Clwyd), Kate Bonney in James Bonney MP (White Bear Theatre, London) and Vocalist for the Welsh Musical Theatre Orchestra. She has most recently finished a run at the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch (London Theatre of the Year, 2019) TV & Radio credits include: Torchwood: Radio Series (Big Finish Productions), Six Nations Commercial: Wales V Scotland (BBC) Credits whilst training include: MC in Oh! She attended the Ty Newydd playwriting course in 2018 with Tim Price and Dirty Protest. She is keen to write alongside her acting. As an actress she has worked extensively in theatre and television. Her credits include Romeo and Juliet with Headlong directed by Robert Icke,  Cherry Orchard at The Young Vic with Katie Mitchell, The RSC, Theatre Clwyd and National Theatre of Wales and more recently Valued Friends at the Rose Theatre directed by Michael Fentiman . She played Ruth Jones’ daughter in Stella for Sky 1 for four series and the recurring character Jenny Flint in Dr Who.
