Paul is writing to a church that is distracted by playing in the shadows; spoken and unspoken rules, rituals, and ways of life that run contrary to the way of Jesus. A shadow points to a greater substance, Paul reminds the church and us, that Jesus is the substance and the reality.

Writing to a church that was facing distorted and false teaching, Paul seeks to set the record straight about who Jesus is, why He is sufficient over any other human philosophy, and what that means for how we should live in every aspect of our lives. Paul helps this young church discover what it means to believe in Jesus and what it looks like to follow Him. What Paul was proclaiming to them is for us as well. The Way of Wisdom

Hardship, sorrow, and suffering are all a part of the human experience. As Paul is writing this letter from prison, he reminds his readers that our hope is not in ourselves but rather the good news is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Through Jesus, we are able to rejoice even in suffering and to see our sorrows used to point others to the hope we have in Him.

Christ in Me

In the section known as the hymn of Jesus or the Song of Jesus, Paul speaks to who Jesus is. Paul also reminds us that when we have a right understanding of Jesus we better understand who we are in Him.

The Song of Jesus

When a light switch is flipped, it exposes the dark and brings about new possibilities. Paul speaks to the transforming power of being transferred from the domain of darkness into the Kingdom of light. His prayer is that not only would we know this, but that we would live this, experience this, and bear the fruit of this.
