Judy is a little partial to our guest on this episode. Dr. Robin Bethel is chatting with us from Austin, and she’s more than happy to share the mic with another Texan. More than that, Dr. Robin is letting all of us dentists in on a little secret when it comes to mastering Yelp reviews, and it might surprise you.  According to Dr. Robin, right now is the best time to be a dentist, even with the rising cost of tuition. To him, the learning opportunities are endless, and it’s so easy for modern dentists to get online, learn something new, get certified, and integrate these skills right into their practice. There’s little reason to referral out anymore and risk losing patients, although Dr. Robin has a different theory on that.  Referrals aren’t as we seasoned dentists remember. Back in the day, when you referred a patient out for niche care, you often didn’t see them again for years. Today, the new word for referral is “collaboration”. We aren’t just sending patients away anymore. Rather, Dr. Robin and his group practice of fellow dentists use these referrals as an opportunity to discuss, collaborate, and learn from another practicing dentist or orthodontist.  Patients benefit from this, too. When we work together for the overall health benefit of our patients, we’re going to start seeing and hearing that positive feedback. That’s where Yelp comes in. The secret to yelp reviews is actually quite simple, it’s just - well - it’s scary. Negative reviews are scary, but the #1 thing you can do with a negative Yelp review is to face it head on.  Dr. Robin’s shares his tips for facing negative reviews, and the patients who wrote them, on this episode with a few key insights we were all delighted to learn. This episode the Dental Slang is a special one. Dr. Gina Dorfman, co-founder of YAPI, is one of the most innovative dentists in our industry right now. It’s rare to find a talented, business savvy practitioner who’s also an advocate for the dental community. Dr. Tony Feck is one of those clinicians, which is why we’re so excited to have him on today’s episode of the Dental Slang Podcast. This mentor and coach founded the Sunrise Dental Solutions community, which is known for bringing dentists together to offer help and support.   We all know dentists have an aversion to change, and Tony says that’s one of the biggest challenges he faces when teaching clinicians. Dentists may spend more money on mentors than any other industry, but we’re still reluctant to make big changes. Whether it’s time or money—or even fear of the unknown—it seems like something always stops us from implementing new technologies and techniques into our practices. To fight this, Tony recommends getting your staff involved in your education. The next time you go to a seminar or meet with your mentor, consider bringing some of your team members along, or at least share what you learned with them when you return to the office. That way, when you lose steam, your team members will be there to help you get back on the right track. Getting everyone on your team excited about the new procedures or tools you’d like to incorporate into your office will keep you motivated, but it also helps to have a coach, mentor or even a consultant to cheer you on as well. Dentists do so much more than just tend to people’s teeth. Dr. Milton Davenport calls us “physicians of the mouth.” His experiences at Harvard Dental School taught him the ways medicine and dentistry are similar, as well as how they’re different, and he shares those experiences with us on today’s episode. While at Harvard, Milton studied how autoimmune diseases impact oral health. This influenced the way he looks at the human mouth, but he found his view was difficult to explain to patients, and even other dentists. Fast forward a few years and he can now show his patients what he’s talking about. He calls it “cheating,” but he has technology that allows him to take photos, diagnose, and treat patients all in one place, making the entire process easier. Welcome back, Slangers! Our guest today, Dr. Amanda Seay, is a comprehensive restorative dentistry guru with several accolades in dental aesthetics and cosmetic dentistry. She’s also been developing several fresh techniques for dental photography with fellow Dental Slanger Dr. Adamo Notarantino, which she will be teaching in their upcoming courses for 2020. It’s time for another episode of the Dental Slang Podcast! Today’s guest is a true dental legend. Dr. Michael Cohen is the founder of the Seattle Study Club, and he’s hopping on the mic today fresh from a presentation in Copenhagen. The topic of that presentation—dental education—comes up in today’s episode, but first we discuss what inspired him to found one of the most well-known study clubs in the dental community. The creation of the Seattle Study Club network stemmed from a need for continuing education. In the early days, these study clubs were more social gatherings than they were an exchange of ideas. Michael wanted to give dentists the opportunity to interact clinically, tap into what he calls their own “databanks of knowledge,” and ultimately become more proficient at diagnostics and treatment planning by working together. The power of collaboration inspired Michael to create this “university without walls.” He went back to school to learn how to better deliver continuing education, allowing him to bring the university to dentists who don’t have the luxury of going back to school. Now, with the Seattle Study Club and his lecture and symposium circuit, dentists can continue to learn new skills and hone their craft without having to sit in a classroom for months on end. The power of collaboration is truly transforming the way dentists learn. The topic at Michael’s latest presentation in Copenhagen was just that—how dental education is evolving. Millennial dentists are changing not only what we are learning but how we seek out education and mentors. The digital age isn’t going anywhere, and the computers and the technology these young dentists are using won’t disappear. This evolution in education is bred from the human element we all crave when we’re learning something new. Learning from each other is the fastest, most effective way for clinicians to grow, and that’s something Millennial dentists are catching on to quick. Dr. Adamo Notarantonio may be one of the most accredited cosmetic dentists in the country, but he also has another talent that we’re showcasing on this episode of The Dental Slang Podcast: photography.
