Ep. 332: The Best Movies of 2021

The "Dirty Sons of Pictures" have one more podcast to gift this holiday season to close out 2021. They are set to discuss more many more movies, plus the highly anticipated "Matrix" sequel/reboot, and end on discussing 2005's stop-motion animated "Corpse Bride" and 1999's Disney channel original sci-fi kids movie, "Can of Worms." Straight to the movies! -"Don't Look Up" is a scathing satire that's meant to make you uncomfortable. -"Titane" is a weird French movie that's not weird enough, and "Petite Maman" is a delightful French drama. -We would have been better off with nothing rather than "The Matrix Resurrections." -Switch the Pitch -- "Corpse Bride" / "Can of Worms" -The guys discuss the 2005 Tim Burton animated musical and where it doesn't quite measure up, especially its ending, and then the 1999 Disney Channel original movie that Ben declared his favorite growing up, about a young boy who unexpectedly becomes a fascination for many different aliens. Then the guys pitch an original movie combining elements from both.

Ep. 331: Switch the Pitch -- "Corpse Bride" (2005) / "Can of Worms" (1999)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are watching movies about little kids with issues, the first more homicidal and the next more earnestly deranged. They discuss 1992's "Mikey," a forgotten but enjoyably silly killer kid movie, and 2006's "Everyone's Hero," a passion project for the last Christopher Reeves. Available on Spotify and Apple Episode 330 includes: -Actor Chris Noth gets Me Too-ed and Jeff Garlin and Jay Johnston get booted from their TV shows. -Trailer reactions: "Sonic 2," "Fantastic Beasts 3," and a new film by the Daniels ("Swiss Army Man"). -Nate shrugs at "C'mon, C'mon" and "the Tragedy of Macbeth" and "The Lost Daughter." -"Spider-Man: No Way Home" is all the Spider-Man. -Switch the Pitch -- "Mikey" / "Everyone's Hero" -The guys discuss the bizarre animated movie co-directed by Christopher Reeve as a passion project, a 2006 movie about Babe Ruth, a talking baseball and a talking baseball bat, and then the far more entertaining 1992 movie "Mikey" about a killer kid who also happens to be a sex pervert and little twerp. They'll combine elements from both into an original pitch.

Ep. 330: Switch the Pitch -- "Mikey (1992)" / "Everyone's Hero" (2006)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are trying to make sense of a notorious mess of a movie, Hollywood legend Laurence Kasdan's adaptation of Stephen King's "Dreamcatcher," a 2003 sci-fi misfire with some of the most insane creative choices. The guys also discuss the recent 2017 "Power Rangers" film and then dutifully combine both into a new project. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 329 includes: -Laurence Kasdan, Rebel Wilson, giving away money, and the forthcoming destruction of Roe v. Wade. -"8-Bit Christmas" is not a new generation's "Christmas Story." -Nate is underwhelmed by both "the Tender Bar" and "Being the Ricardos." -Switch the Pitch -- "Power Rangers" / "Dreamcatcher" -Without much more discussion on the recent Power Rangers movie, the guys take a deep dive into the disastrous 2003 Stephen King adaptation and then try and pitch a new project combining elements from both.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are looking at two flawed movies and trying to make something better in their wake, starting with 2016's frustrating and low-budget "Let's Be Evil," and then the 2020 Netflix family superhero action film, "We Can Be Heroes." Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 328 includes: -"Jurassic Park" prologue... now with... CGI dinosaurs. -Nate offers reviews for three awards-caliber movies: "House of Gucci," "The Last Duel," and "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." -Ben says "Encanto" is a charming addition to the House House pedigree of animation. -Switch the Pitch -- "Let's Be Evil" / "We Can Be Heroes" -The guys discuss the low=budget indie horror thriller, "Let;s Be Evil," which has a lot of conceptual issues, and Robert Rodriguez's kids superhero action adventure, "We Can Be Heroes," which also has conceptual issues, and then they combine both into a much better pitch.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are down another month and there's enough room for a special presentation of "Saturday Night Jive," the podcast from George and Ben where they chat about the history of SNL and movies starring alums, and this one's a doozy. The meme-before-there-were-memes 2006 movie, "Snakes on a Plane."  Available on Apple and Spotify

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" have stumbled upon another movie so mad and crazy that it almost deserves to be seen, unless you care about your mental well-being. Thank goodness there's these guys, as they discuss 2002's "comedy" by writer/director/star Jeff Daniels, "Super Sucker," as well as the slightly memorable 1986 killer robot in a mall slasher movie, "Chopping Mall." The guys then combine both properties to pitch a brand-new project about dueling killer robot salesman. Available on Spotify and Apple Episode 327 includes: -New Spider-Man trailer with more multi-verse action. But is added Spider-Men of Spider past an emotional incentive? -Nate runs through.... a lot of movies to cover, from "Spencer" to "No Time to Die" to "Venom" to "Eternals" to "tick, tick, BOOM" to "King Richard" and more. -"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" is a perfectly heart-felt sequel and the haters have it wrong. -Switch the Pitch -- "Chopping Mall" / "Super Sucker" -The guys discuss the 1986 sci-fi slasher film about a killer mall secruity droid killing dumb teenagers and 2002's truly bizarre passion project by Jeff Daniels who served as writer, director, producer, and star as a vacuum salesman who discovers they also work as a masturbatory aid.

Ep. 327: Switch the Pitch -- "Chopping Mall" (1986) / "Super Sucker" (2002)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are going into the 8-bit realm to pitch and cast a "Punch Out" movie based upon combining key elements of 1990's "Dick Tracy," a truly weird movie, and 2004's celebrated "Million Dollar Baby" which won a slew of Oscars. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 326 includes: -Paul Rudd: People's Sexiest Man Alive. -R.I.P. Dean Stockwell. You're with Ziggy now, pal. -You will believe that Tom Hanks can build a robot to save a dog... in "Finch." -So is "Eternals" the worst MCU movie as they say? -Switch the Pitch -- "Dick Tracy" / "Million Dollar Baby" -The guys discuss Warren Beatty's deeply weird, deeply faithful comic adaptation and the Oscar-winning Clint Eastwood boxing drama and then combine them to form a "Punch Out" movie based upon the classic NES game.

Ep. 326: Switch the Pitch -- "Dick Tracy" (1990) / "Million Dollar Baby" (2004)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are voicing their frustration with our current state of affairs by pitching "Anti-Vax," built from watching 2013's "Bounty Killer," a low-budget post-apocalyptic Western, and 2016's "Pandemic," an indie found footage zombie movie that just might surprise you with its ingenuity. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 325 includes: -Ben, sadly, catches up on his missed opportunity to quote more from Mr. Skin's skin-crawling writing. -Tarantino to sell "Pulp Fiction" deleted scenes as NFTs... what? -Can "Morbius" look any worse with every new trailer? -"The French Dispatch" is more of the same Wes Anderson, perhaps even more esoteric. -"Last Night in Soho" could have used more nights to better establish its plot and rules. -Switch the Pitch -- "Bounty Killer" / "Pandemic" -Two lesser-seen genre movies, one that tries too hard to be trashy exploitation fare and the other that is a surprisingly adept found footage zombie thriller. The guys then combine the elements into a brand-new pitc about hunting down anti-vaxxers in a post-apocalypse brought about from a pandemic.

Ep. 325: Switch the Pitch -- Anti-Vaxer Edition -- "Bounty Killer" (2013) / "Pandemic" (2016)

The "Dirty Soms of Pitches" are back from filming their 48 Hour film short, which you can see here, and again watching lesser-watched movies to try and make a new project based upon their key elements. The guys tackle 1971's anti-Western Western, "A Gunfight," that looks at the human affect of a shootout, and 2011's "Carnage," based on a stage play, about two sets of parents coming into conflict because of their kids' conflict. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 324 includes: -More on the Dave Chappelle controversy with his trans blind spot and determination to ruin his career. -Alec Baldwin fires a prop gun on set and kills the movie's director of photography. How could something like this happen? -Trailer reactions to "Uncharted" and "Lightyear." -"Halloween Kills" is a boring slasher movie with nothing new. EVIL DIES TONIGHT. -Ben weighs the pros of a big, faithful adaptation of one of his favorite sci-fi books... with the nature of "Dune" also being a Denis Villenueve film. -Switch the Pitch -- "A Gunfight" / "Carnage" -The guys discuss Roman Polanski's very play-like 2011 tale of feuding adults descending into children and the 1971 Western starring Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash that is 98 percent lead-up to the shootout, and then the guys pitch a movie combining elements from both.

Ep. 324: Switch the Pitch -- "A Gunfight" (1971) / "Carnage" (2011)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" once had George come onto the podcast to test us on what he deemed one of the most amazing and unpredictable movies he had ever seen. Years later, for his podcast with his brother Ben, the guys of "Saturday Night Jive" give this 2017 curiosity the full blown deconstruction it rightfully deserves. Available on Apple and Spotify

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are watching two movies that aren't worth your time but trying to create a brand new pitch that could be better than both, and this week's subjects are 1998's comedy "Woo" and 2019's British indie dark comedy "A Serial Killer's Guide to Life." Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 323 includes: -Casting news: Adam Warlock and animated Mario Brothers. -Trailer discussion for "Scream 5: Scream and Scream Again." -If you're a Sopranos fan, you might not even find enough to like with "The Many Saints of Newark." -"The Adams Family 2" is perfectly fine family film. -Switch the Pitch -- "Woo" / "A Serial Killer's Guide to Life" -The guys discuss Jada Pinkett's early solo outing, 1998's "Woo," and a frustrating dark comedy that feels entirely stretched thin, 2019's "A Serial Killer's Guide to Life." They then combine both into a new, and better, pitch for a movie about the extent a lonely man will go to accept a charming serial killer girlfriend.

Ep. 323: Switch the Pitch -- "Woo" (1998) / "A Serial Killer's Guide to Life" (2019)

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" have returned from a brief break with more movie discussion and news takes and are combining the Phillip K. Dick-inspired sci-fi movie, "Paycheck," John Woo's last American movie, with the 2016 Sundance indie "Southside with You" that chronicles the first date of a young Barack and Michelle Obama. The guys debate whether an interesting movie could be had with either premise (hint: one of them, no way) and create a far more interesting new project on the fly. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 322 includes: -Dr. Who getting new showrunner starting with the next season, and it's Russel T. Davies, the old showrunner. -Marvel is suing the estates of its dead creators. Is this the next chapter in Phase Four? -Evan Hansen is a monster and "Dear Evan Hansen" is a deeply misguided musical and movie. -Ben just gives up with "Venom: Let There Be Carnage." -Switch the Pitch -- "Paycheck" / "Southside with You" -The guys discuss the disappointing John Wood-Ben Affleck sci-fi action movie and 2016's rambling would-be romance of the Obamas on the first date back in the day. They then combine both mediocre movies into a better pitch for a new project involving presidential time travelin' intrigue.

On a very special edition of "Saturday Night Jive," the regular podcast Ben and his brother George record to discuss movies starring Saturday Night Love alums, the guys discuss the career and impact of one of their favorite comedians of all time, Norm MacDonald, and the reoccurring part of Stan Hooper. Every week, Nate, Ben, ad Eric, with the occasional special guest, talk movies and entertainment news, and then play a series of movie-related games, including the central game, The Pitch, wherein our heroes take a concept and try and turn it into a working movie. Most of the time the podcasts will just descend into girlish laughter. Other reoccurring games include Defend Yourself, where one person must defend their enjoyment of an indefensible movie, Sequel-ize It, Porno-ize It, Recast It, Genre Swap, Adapt the Unadaptable, and Vanity Project, wherein our heroes tailor a movie project to a star.
