Rachel Hollis is the best selling author of Girl, Wash Your Face and Girl, Stop Apologizing and host of the Rachel Hollis Podcast.  In a recent interview, Rachel explained how early in her career before she had written her 1st book, she believed that she just had to finish a book and then it would get published.  But when she finished it, no publisher was interested.  Michael Jordan, widely considered the best basketball player of all time, was famously cut from his high school basketball team.   There are many who would say that Michael Jordan’s coach made the biggest mistake of his life, or those publishers missed a huge opportunity by passing on Rachel’s first book.  But Rachel shared: “The truth was that I was not good enough yet and he was not good enough yet and we had to keep on doing the work to get to this place.  That’s what people miss.  You have to keep going.  You don’t know who you are going to be half a decade from now or 10 years from now.”  Expanding on Rachel’s quote in this episode, Eva shares why we can expect to fail (especially on our first try) when we are pursuing our big dreams.  And why it is so important that we keep on doing the work and not give up.  Rachel Hollis and Michale Jordan would have never shared their unique gifts with the world if they had quit!  We all have unique gifts and we must keep on pushing toward our big dreams even when we don't get the early result we were hoping for!  For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/274

DB 273: Life Lessons Learned From Bows & Arrows!

You may not know the name but Bobby Hall, but if you have followed the music scene for the past decade you likely know of the multi-platinum recording artist known as Logic. Logic is Bobby Hall (or I guess Bobby Hall is Logic depending on how you look at it!). Logic has a new book out called the Bright Future which is a memoir of his journey from a horrifically abusive childhood to becoming one of the most accomplished and respected musical artists of his generation.  Logic has been out promoting his memoir and in a recent interview, he was asked about how to find happiness.  Logic grew up in very difficult circumstances with an alcoholic mother and an absent father who was addicted to crack cocaine.  It was a struggle to survive yet alone become successful.  In this episode, Eva shares Logic’s enlightening answer on how  he found happiness.  Hint: He didn’t find happiness by becoming rich or famous.  It is an important lesson for all the young Big Dreamers who are constantly bombarded with messages about how money and fame is all what matters.    For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/272

DB 272: How To Find Happiness!

Dr. Susan David, the bestselling author of Emotional Agility, has identified a powerful difference between “Have to” Goals and “Want to” Goals.   Eva shares that difference in this episode, and offers some examples of “Want to” and “Have to” Goals in her own life.  This includes the recent experience of hatching baby quail from an incubator (definitely a “Want to” goal).  But more importantly, Eva shares how she was able to apply Dr. Susan’s advice to convert studying for math, which she always thought of as a “Have to” task, into a “Want to” task by connecting math with her love of farm animals.  Eva also challenges all Big Dreamers to identify a “Have to” goal in your life, and reframe it as a “Want to” goal using the strategy that she shares in this powerful episode.  A huge thank you to Dr. Susan David for outlining this important distinction.   For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/271

DB 271: "Want to" Goals Versus "Have to" Goals? (the difference is HUGE!)

Michaela DePrince was born in the midst of a horrific civil war in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Her father was killed by rebels, and shortly after her father’s death, her mother died of fever and starvation.  As if life was not already difficult enough, Michaela has a skin condition which causes patches of her skin to lose its color.  In her village, this was considered the curse of the devil and she was abandoned by her uncle and lived in an orphanage where she was the least favorite child out of 27 kids -- which meant she was the last to eat at every meal.  Fast forward to today, and Michaela is a professional ballerina, competed on Dancing With The Stars, performed in Madonna and Beyonce music videos, and spoke alongside Barack Obama at a leadership conference.  In this episode, Eva shares how this remarkable lady was able to overcome the living nightmare that was her early childhood and fulfill her dream of being a professional ballerina.  Michaela’s story is a powerful reminder that circumstances outside of your control do not define you and to never, ever give up on your dreams.  For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/270

DB 270: Never, Ever Give Up On Your Big Dream!

We’ve told our kids on numerous occasions to “Be Patient. Things Take Time.” or even the good ol’ phrase “Patience is a Virtue.”   But we recently stumbled across a quote from the great Tom Bilyeu that challenged our views on patience, especially when it comes to teaching our kids about how to accomplish their Big Dreams.  Tom shared: “Stop being patient and start asking yourself, how do I accomplish my 10 year plan in 6 months?  You’ll probably fail but you’ll be a lot further along than the person who simply accepted it was going to take 10 years.”  In this episode, Eva unpacks Tom’s quote and shares why it is so important to not only Dream Big but also to take massive action.  While Tom’s quote may be controversial, we believe it is an important reminder that Big Dreamers can not wait for their big dreams to unfold but instead must charge towards their dreams.   For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/269

What really matters most in life?  The shoes that you wear?  The latest video game that you own?  The care that you drive?  Material items might bring us temporary joy but when you really think about the things that matter most in your life, what comes to the top of your mind?  Sergey Young has achieved great success in life. DB 268: What Matters Most In Life (Hint: You Can't Buy It!)

Lizzie Velasquez was born with a rare syndrome that makes it impossible for her to gain weight.   As a result, even though Lizzie is an adult, she has never weighed more than 65 pounds.  A number of years ago, a terrible cyber bully posted a video on Youtube titled “World’s Ugliest Woman” and the video was about Lizzie.  Not only was this a horrible, horrible thing to do, but unfortunately the video went viral so millions of people saw Lizzie in the “World’s Ugliest Woman” video and the comments were even worse.  When Lizzie discovered the video online, she was completely devastated.  In today’s episode, Eva shares the powerful decision that Lizzie made in weeks and months after the video was posted so that this nightmarish experience did not destroy her life.  Quite the opposite, Lizzie now believes that the video being posted was one of the best things that ever happened to her.   Eva shares how Lizzie was able to come to such a inspiring decision, and how this choice has impacted the lives of so many others who struggle with self-esteem or have been the victims of bullying.  Thank you Lizzie for inspiring so many.  You are beautiful inside and out!  For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/267

DB 267: How To Turn Hate Into Love

DB 266: Medals & Trophies Do Not Guarantee Happiness

Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and currently ranked No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).  As of this publication, he has won 20 Grand Slam men's singles titles (a record shared with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal) and based on his play in recent years most tennis fans believe he will own that record before the end of his career.  In a recent interview, Novak shared a story about a very low point in his career when mentally he felt like giving up.  It is hard to imagine one of the world’s greatest players ever thinking about giving up, and it goes to show that even the world’s best, go through ups and downs in their career.   Yet at the time, Novak was really contemplating whether he wanted to continue competing in tournaments.  He described himself crying, sitting on the floor, and really struggling with this decision.  In this episode, Eva shares the advice that Novak got in the midst of this struggle and why he ultimately decided to continue playing tennis professionally.  This is a really important lesson because we will all face significant obstacles on the path to our Big Dreams, and Novak’s advice will help you reconnect with that passion that inspired you to embark on the journey in the first place.  Thankfully Novak implemented this technique, and he continues to share his unique gift with tennis fans around the world.  For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/265

DB 265: When You Are Ready To Give Up, Do THIS!

On October 3, 2012 at the age of 24, Lauren Wasser's life changed forever.  As a result of a medical condition called toxic shock syndrome, Wasser was placed in a medically-induced coma. Doctors pumped her with 80 pounds of fluids to get the toxins out of her body and conducted several blood transfusions.  Lauren miraculously survived but doctors were not able to save her right leg, which had to be amputated. Overnight, Lauren had lost her identity.  As a professional model, she had developed an idea of what it meant to be beautiful and initially she felt that losing her legs meant that she was no longer beautiful.  While this story could have ended tragically, thankfully it has taken an inspiring turn as today Lauren believes she is more beautiful than ever before -- inside and out.  Leading brands around the world agree with Lauren’s assessment, and she continues to book modeling gigs now with her beautiful golden prosthetic legs.  In this episode, Eva shares the mindset shifts Lauren made in order to turn her life around.  Eva also reminds all Big Dreamers that what truly matters in life is not how you look, but your character, values, and how you feel about yourself.    For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/264

DB 263: A Genius Trick To Build Great Habits!

Have you ever wanted to speak up for yourself and for whatever reason stayed quiet?  Eva used to be so shy that she didn't even want to place her own order at a restaurant.  Today Eva shares why it is so important to be willing to raise your hand, to ask for help, and to stand up for yourself.  This episode was inspired by Maria Menounos. Maria has been a primetime TV personality for many years, serving as host of Extra and E! DB 262: Why You Need To Learn To Stand Up For Yourself

DB 261: The secret to building confidence (not what you want it to be!)

When we stumbled across a video on Matt D'Avella Youtube channel entitled “The truth about chasing your dreams,” we took the bait and had to watch.  After all, this is the DREAM BIG Podcast and Eva’s mission is to encourage young Big Dreamers to believe in their dreams and take massive action in pursuit of those dreams.  In the video, Matt shared his “ 3-year rule” which is that in order to find success in any field you need to dedicate at least three years before you can expect to see significant results.  And then he introduced Tommy Jackett and Josh Janssen, 2 friends from Australia who in 2018, 3 years ago, started a podcast called “The Daily Talk Show.”  Now you would expect that since Tommy and Josh had been podcasting for 3 years, they would have found “success,” right?  It turns out that after three long years of consistent hard work, Tommy and Josh did not have nearly as big of an audience as they had expected, nor had they made enough money to quit their day jobs.  But they both still consider their podcasting experience as a huge success!
