Riv. Mayor Lock Dawson Discusses Passage of AB 331 with Gov. Newsom and other CA Mayors

The Redlands city council voted three to two, Tuesday evening to approve plans for their first crosswalk mural. It will also be the city’s first mural to include the LGBTQ community. “The mural is inclusive of the entire community," said Daniel Gohman, director of The Artlands, the organization behind the proposal. "It’s got all the colors of the rainbow, black, white, [and] brown.” Designed by artists from the Pulp Press Collective, the mural will feature cartoon characters painted in each of those colors. Pedestrians and drivers will spot figures like a librarian, skateboarder and person in drag. Crosswalks decorated with creative murals are increasingly becoming popular in southland cities with places like Rancho Cucamonga, Long Beach, Pasadena and Los Angeles already having them. Gohman said it’s difficult for artists to make it here in the Inland Empire, with many leaving to find work in L.A. so “to get support from the city is a huge win," said Gohman. Two teenage hikers who went missing on Mount Baldy were found safe Tuesday. They were part of a group of 51 students from Downey High School’s soccer and lacrosse teams that were led on a hike by two coaches and a teacher. Monday evening, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s responded to a call that some of the hikers were unable to make it out safely. A helicopter crew brought 10 students and three adults down from the mountain. At that time, two hikers, a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, were missing. Search and rescue crews along with volunteers worked through the night. Around Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. the teens were found and airlifted to safety. Authorities report they both appeared to be ok.

A celebration of life for former Congressman Jerry Lewis, one of the Inland Empire’s longest serving politicians, will be on Thursday, August 5 at 10:00 a.m. at the University of Redlands Chapel. Lewis died at his Redlands home on July 15. He was 86. Lewis’ political career started with a post as a local school board member. He then moved to the California State Assembly, followed by representing San Bernardino County in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 2013. Among his achievements were leading an effort to establish the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and improving health care treatments at the Loma Linda University Medical Center. Hundreds of endangered frogs were re-introduced into the San Bernardino National Forest on July 8. KVCR’s Megan Jamerson has more on the project to save Southern California’s population of Mountain Yellow-Legged frogs. In video footage released by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, a team of scientists can be seen squatting near a pool of water in the San Jacinto mountains. They are holding those plastic containers with purple lids that you store leftovers in. With the tops off, dozens of tiny yellow speckled frogs leap to freedom. This was the first of two releases planned for July that in total will reintroduce around 400 frogs to their native habitat. For more than 20 years, scientists from the San Diego Zoo, UCLA, the U.S. Forest Service, and state and federal wildlife agencies have been working together to save the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog. Congressman Mark Takano co-sponsored a bill this past February to establish the “Western Riverside County Refuge.” KVCR's Jonathan Linden spoke to the Congressman to find out more about the goal of the refuge and what areas it would include. The bill was initially released by Rep. Ken Calvert as the Wildlife Refuge Conservation and Recreation for Community Act . The bill was later included as an amendment of the Invest in America Act , which passed the House of Representatives on July 1st. If the act passes, the amendment would create the Western Riverside County Refudge, which would bring together several already protected lands under the already existing Western Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan. Rep. Takano says creating the refuge would "Create a mechanism for federal agencies to inventory the lands within the refuge boundaries established by this legislation."
