no. 5 - a million different lives in one: Ryan Anthony Dube is un-summarizable

As an expat, you are (likely) in another part of the world by choice. So going home is always possible. When you have a no-good-horrible-very-bad-day, the thought arises: I can just hit escape. And go home? For me, I am usually happy in my chosen home of Pichilemu, Chile. But there are days when I question everything. In this chapter, I discuss failing as a digital nomad, and then my failed relationships with Chilean men.

How did I get here? After some side stepping around the fact, I realize I should introduce myself as your host. I’ll walk you all through the fortuitous series of events that lead me down here. Something pulled me down along the Pan-American Highway, and left me living and working in this small, surf town in Chile. Sometimes, I question myself. I wonder how I found myself in another part of a world. I wonder what I’m still doing here, and whether I should pack up and go home. But, I sure hope I will Remain In Light. And Chile is definitely where the Light is.

In this episode, I use a This American Life-inspired format to describe the unfortunate death of two creative communities I’ve encountered during my time in Chile. I was first inspired by Nadine and her Yellow Submarine With Wheels, and her construction team of merry pranksters. And then I came to Pichilemu and found this group of friends that adopted me, that inspired me. But I watched both of these communities fall apart. You would think in these types of circles, that the act of producing the creative work would divide the group. But in these cases, it’s not the creative process, but the introduction of external stresses that have caused these groups to self-destruct.
