America's Favorite Speed Painter, Dan Dunn, joins FTT for a fun and interesting talk about speed painting and how he got into performance art, comedy, caricature, painting and more! It all started with caricatures. When he began his career as a professional artist, Dan would draw at over 200 events per year – and anywhere from 12 to 20 people per hour for events. This was his Karate Kid, “Wax on, wax off” ninja training. Yeah… he can draw a face pretty fast! After many years as a caricaturist and illustrator, Dan was inspired by the work of the late, great, original speed painter, Denny Dent. Dan rented a storage warehouse, draped it in plastic and started throwing paint around. He rehearsed for 9 months before he had his first show – a stunning performance in Atlantic City that brought international attention to the classically trained painter. Dan’s been painting and performing on stages and screens around the world with superstars like Taylor Swift, Jay Leno and Queen Latifah to name a few! Garnering contracts with companies like Red Bull, Herradura Tequila, ComEd, and the globally active advertising firm Leo Burnett, his work has likewise earned him noteworthy and monetary awards, and features in such publications as Bluecanvas magazine and the Chicago Tribune. He was awarded Best in Show in the Great Lakes Emerging Artist Competition, was a finalist in the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition, has been awarded Gold Medals in advertising from both Society of Illustrators of New York and Los Angeles, and juried into the Communication Arts Illustration Annual. He currently lives in Buffalo, New York where he spends his time painting and teaching part-time at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
