The thrill of spotting something valuable that the seller underestimated or being able to negotiate a 'winning' price - these kinds of experiences have always warmed my heart. Lol. About a year ago, I was sure I’d found one. It was a power tool. I couldn’t pay the guy quick enough. Such a steal! It wasn’t until I got home that I realized it was, in fact, too good to be true. The tool was almost useless. I was so angry! Is there anything more painful than finding out what you thought was going to be a great buy or a great experience was in fact a bit of a scam? These kinds of experiences fall within the scope of our topic this week. We’re beginning a new series that’s focused on a question What kind of person am I becoming? For four weeks we’re focusing on character qualities that lead to lives that matter. This Sunday I’m exploring the "trickster" mentality and the subtle yet toxic effect it can have on even the most well-intentioned lives. Do we want to pull away from the sadness all around us? Or do we know how to create profound connections through sadness? For many years, I had no clue In the famous video for the 1990 smash hit Nothing Compares 2 U, Sinead O'Connor expresses the sadness of a breakup. But she does more than that... She gives language to the sadness that exists all around us. The sadness in our partners and friends, our family and colleagues, all the people who have had loss. what to do with sadness, never mind be able to create connection. But that famous line from Jesus haunts me in those moments: Love your Neighbor Love your neighbor when they are angry, and scared, full of awe, and yes, even when they are sad. Do we know how to love our neighbor, our family and friends, when they are sad? Do we know how to create connection when there are tears? Do we know how to love the people around us regardless of what they are feeling? This is the final week of our series the Spirituality of Emotions where we have explored the spiritual practice of creating connection through emotions that we are not very comfortable with. It has created so much learning in me as I have started to learn to love the people around me, even when they are feeling emotions that I don't really like. I feel like I'm starting to understand the profundity of Jesus' words. So we want to invite you to come out either in person or online and invite someone you love to join you.
