Lauren quietly sat in the back of the classroom, not engaging with students around her and never offering to raise her hand to respond in class. She felt so inadequate in the responses she thought of, or her answers were already shared by the time she worked up the confidence to raise her hand. Lauren’s slow processing speed along with her dyslexia constantly interfered in her engagement in learning like other students. She was certainly at disadvantage on the average, but with the advent of immediacy in our culture she was distinctly but unintentionally left out.

Caleb seemed to learn well when he was at home and in the orchard because there was always time to practice and get it right. But at school, it was a different thing, Caleb never felt like he had mastery of anything. He was so convicted by his learning between home and school. He did not let his parents know; as they thought he learned just fine. But with the school year winding down and the orchard needing attention, Caleb's frustration grew. He finally had had enough. One evening he asked his parents if he could be homeschooled.

Broken

After they'd arrived back home, and had put Spencer to bed, Sandy sat with Ben who was preparing for Monday's lessons at work. She broached his experiences in school first to learn more about how he struggled. Ben shared his difficulty with language. He said I thought you knew since I still have some weaknesses. Sandy honestly hadn't put much thought to it; she'd just been helpful to her love. When Ben had shared without emotion about his own problems, she felt much more comfortable with sharing what she'd learned about Spencer. Sandy told Ben about her conversation with Spencer’s teacher. She asked him if he’d noticed the change in Spencer too?

Raising Spencer

Hannah shared the story of helping her mother with the plants and tried to draw an analogy to bound roots in language. She said the bound root in language cannot grow like the bound roots of a potted plant because it needs a prefix or a suffix. Potted plants roots need space and soil. Her tutor encouraged her to keep making such connections to learning from other parts of her life, as it helps her hang on to the meaning of new learning as well. Hannah was kind of inspired by this connection she had come up with.

Bound Roots

Tess had always felt that she was strange, because of the way others reacted to her. She had difficulty making and keeping friends, because of her perception of how they saw her. Tess just wanted to have good friends, but always seemed to be outside the popular kids and isolated from the relationships that seemed to mean anything at school. She kept these feelings to herself putting on a strong front despite her perceived weaknesses.

Strange

Shawna understood in running what it meant to endure, to keep going, to be steadfast till the end. She just did not have same endurance in school. Her reading was slow, and laborious. It was a drudgery with seemingly no purpose. Just the opposite of her running. This conflict was difficult for Shawna to manage, she tried everything to bring her reading up to speed. But it was not like running where a change in pace or strategy could make a difference fairly quickly. All the things she tried seemed to make no real difference; this made Shawna furious and anxious about herself.

Enduring

As the school year progressed, Denver became more and more dissatisfied with his performance on tests and homework. He wanted so for it to match his abilities with the times where he can show his skills hands-on. At one-point Denver decided there was something wrong with him, and he began to investigate the source of his difficulties. He started reading about reading differences, and one term kept being used to describe this problem. The word was dyslexia. Denver asked his parents about dyslexia, and they agreed it was not familiar to either of them.

Letter

When Helena now in second-grade, wears her hair in a pony with a large ribbon, and her favorite outfit for school. The school suggested that she might benefit from using colored overlays, as she was struggling with reading. Mom and Dad not knowing any better said yes. The overlays proved to be exciting for Helena and for a while she improved a little. But once it became routine her gains quickly disappeared.

Visual Myths

James's writing assignment was open-ended in terms of theme, and structure. Students had plenty of leeways to take it in any direction. James had recently spent some time in a bible study which had focused on Galatians, and specifically chapter four. James was drawn to verse twenty-eight of that chapter which suggests we are children of promise. James wanted to use this to compose an essay, which would argue that dyslexia was not a disqualifying for being a child of promise.

Child of Promise

During first semester her Social Studies teacher, was relentless in his demands on his students, no matter their ways of learning. He kept a pace which was quick by anyone's standards. He moved on to new material assuming concepts, dates, and facts were understood. This quickly put Francine behind and created a disconnect for her and her teacher.

Condemned

That first week of school it became clear how the school was different. John's class only had ten students in it. The amount of attention he received and the level of concern for the instruction were evident even to John. He was immediately enthused with the activities they were doing and how he seemed to catch on right away. It was automatically easier to make friends and to find out that everyone in the class has specific needs. John made friends with another boy named David who was also new to the school. They became best of friends and supported the other as the school year progressed.

Defined

After supper, I went to do my homework and finally got ready for bed. I was really very tired from my work shift. As I got into bed. My usual prayers for family and friends turned to work. I prayed for wisdom and grace at work. That I would learn and show competence. My fear inside was that I would fail and be embarrassed at work, or fired. After praying, I was quickly falling asleep, and I heard a tiny voice say, "You are competent." My eyes shot open, I scanned the room for a figure or source for the voice. There was none to be found. I laid awake for some time nervously thinking about the voice. Finally, I relaxed enough again to fall asleep.

Competence

On their next check-up with their doctor, they addressed their concern for his language development, as he was nearing eighteen months old. The doctor did his usual exam and records check before hearing the parent’s concerns. He spoke to the child to see what he could generate from him directly but got just what the parents had reported. He checked the child's hears again and suggested he order an audiology exam to rule out a hearing loss. Bret's parents agreed with this approach and were hopeful it would prove helpful.

Grammar

Well, a week went by, and Grace had watched the video several times a day every day. After the third time she could watch without crying, and after the fifth time, she could be less critical of her movements. By the end of the week, Grace had watched it and just enjoyed the artful beauty of the dance, not even thinking about herself. She grew in her confidence and assurance that she could perform. Shelly called her near the end of the week and asked how she was feeling. Grace and Shelly had a nice chat and agreed to meet for practice, the next day.

Confused

Jimmy has brown hair and loves baseball. He knows all kinds of facts and history on the sport. He is a fanatic for the Kansas City Royals, who has only watched on TV, despite living less than an hour from the ball park. He wears his Royals hat to school nearly every day. Jimmy is energetic and friendly, loves to play especially involving games or using his imagination. To know him without knowing his learning difference you would never suspect it. Now Jimmy does try to cover up his spelling and at times is embarrassed by his scores. This frustrates him and he tends to not really put much effort into his spelling.
