So when I discovered today’s guest, Jennifer Rollin, on Instagram, where she shares insightful commentary on eating disorders, body positivity, and the health at every size movement I felt really connected to her work.   Jennifer Rollin is a therapist and founder of The Eating Disorder  Center in Rockville, Maryland. She specializes in working with  adolescents and adults with eating disorders, including,  anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, and body image  issues, anxiety, and depression.   Jennifer has been named as one of the top eating disorder  experts in the world by Balance Eating Disorder Treatment  Center. She has a certificate in Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral  Therapy for Eating Disorders and a certificate in Dialectical  Behavior Therapy. She is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor.  She served as the chairwoman of Project Heal's national network  of eating disorder treatment providers. She was on The Junior  Board of Directors for The National Eating Disorders  Association. Getting Real about Diet Culture, Eating Disorder Recovery, Body Positivity, Health at Every Size, and Intuitive Eating with Jennifer Rollin

This week, in the launch of Season 3. I’m talking to Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor who was introduced to me by last season’s guest, Dr. Jeffrey Rediger.   I loved this episode. It reminded me how much control we have over our lives - that we have agency to experience life how we want it and that by understanding how our brain works we can be even more empowered.   It reminded me of this quote from Marcus Aurelius  - you have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength. It feels even more relevant in this time that we’re living in.  Dr. Taylor is a Harvard trained and published neuroanatomist. Her area of specialty was understanding how our brain creates our perception of reality by studying the differences between the postmortem brains of human individuals who were classified as either neuro-typical, with those diagnosed with severe mental illness. Ironically, in 1996 Dr. Taylor experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Her 2008 memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documented her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery and it spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list.  She is an expert, both personally and professionally, about the neuroplasticity of our brain and our ability to not only recover from trauma, but about how we have the power to choose who and how we want to be in the world.   In 2008 Dr. Taylor gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 27 million views. Also in 2008, Dr. Taylor was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's “100 Most Influential People in the World” and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Soul Series” web-cast. Her new book WHOLE BRAIN LIVING: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life blends neuroanatomy with psychology and teaches us how we can short-circuit our emotional reactivity and find our way to deep inner peace. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor on Understanding How the Brain Works and our Four Characters to Live with Meaning and Peace

Today...we’re talking about how to take better care of the planet.    To be totally transparent, I don’t know as much as I would like about climate change or the details around the impact of my daily choices.    However, what I do know is that our small actions can make a difference, and we’re reaching a point where we all need to be taking action and playing our role.    Whether you choose to bring a reusable bag to the store, eliminate your use of single-use plastic like ziplock bags, replace your plastic tupperware with glass, reduce the amount of times you order takeout or buy plastic water bottles, eat less meat, shop second hand, your actions do add up and they do make a difference.    Some of the things that I do include, making an effort to recycle all of the items that can be recycled, shop in the bulk section of the grocery store, forgo plastic bags for my fruits and veggies at the grocery store, say no to the bag when I can, have a meatless day each week, and try to buy from brands who are making an effort to be sustainable. I turn my lights off and don’t leave my heat or AC on.   I am far from perfect, but I am trying to learn so I can make mindful actions when it comes to my choices.   And today’s guest taught me SO much to help inform these choices.    Lauren Gregor is Founder and CEO of Rent a Romper, a rental clothing company for children because they grow so fast. Prior to founding Rent-a-Romper, Lauren served as a strategy and operations leader at FirstGroup plc and Los Angeles Unified School District. She brings her experience in business and as a mom to her goal of making life easier for parents and the planet. To say I was inspired by today’s guest would be an understatement…   When it comes to spontaneous healing, skepticism abounds. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health at Dalhousie University, the Director of the Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities & Community Health Project (The ENRICH Project) and the Flagship Co-Lead of the Improving the Health of People of African Descent.    Her research, teaching, and community leadership and advocacy work are examining and addressing the health and mental health impacts of structural inequalities within the environment, public infrastructure, health and mental health care, and child welfare in Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and refugee communities.    The 2020 Netflix documentary There’s Something in the Water is based on Dr. Waldron’s book and was co-produced by Waldron, actress Ellen Page, Ian Daniel, and Julia Sanderson, and co-directed by Page and Daniel.    Her research also led to the creation of two private members bills for addressing environmental racism: the Nova Scotia bill An Act to Address Environmental Racism (Bill 111), which was introduced in the Nova Scotia Legislature in April 2015, and the federal bill A National Strategy to Redress Environmental Racism (Bill C-230), which was introduced in the House of Commons in February 2020.   Dr. Waldron is also conducting several studies on mental illness in Black, Indigenous and other racialized communities in Nova Scotia, focusing specifically on the mental health impacts of discrimination, stigma, and barriers to help-seeking.
