It’s graduation season at MU, and Tigers of all stripes are celebrating their Mizzou Made accomplishments. TheClass of 2020 has already adjusted to the unprecedented demands of this unusual time. Whether it’s in our labs, classrooms or studios, the MU community is accustomed to innovative thinking. Even during these unprecedented times, our students, faculty and staff continue to make virtual connections and show their Tiger resilience. Across the disciplines, our community is finding unique ways to share experiences that bring us all together.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk with Kearra Johnson, a senior earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design; and Zoe Rich, a junior earning her Bachelor of Arts in Art and Marketing. Thriving Creativity

For many Mizzou student-athletes, the move off-campus also meant an abrupt end to the spring season. Amid so much uncertainty, Tigers rose to the challenge and quickly adapted how they train and connect with coaches, supporters and fellow teammates. The hard work doesn’t stop, and Tigers are finding new ways to stay active and ready to compete.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk with three Mizzou student-athletes: Hannah Schuchts, a graduate student earning her Master of Business Administration and a member of the Women’s Basketball Team; Riley Sents, a graduate student earning her Master of Education and a member of the Women’s Volleyball Team; and Jayson Ashford, a junior General Studies major and a Track and Field athlete. Home and Away

In every county and metro area of the state, University of Missouri Extension works to improve the lives of Missourians. Despite the limitations of social distancing, Extension is using technology to expand access to locally grown food, provide farmers new opportunities to sell their products and guide small businesses through this difficult time. By working with community partners, Extension is offering creative solutions that tackle the challenges of today and help everyone move forward together.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk with Lorin Fahrmeier, the Farm to Institution Project Coordinator for the Youth and Family Division of University of Missouri Extension; and Justin Keay, a field specialist in horticulture for MU Extension in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. Together, we discuss how Extension staff and faculty are connecting Missouri producers with consumers in order to provide healthy food and strengthen local economies.

Reaching Out

It’s been about a month since Tigers moved from in-person to remote work. These weeks have been marked by incredible change, creativity and adaptation. In support of this ongoing transition, Mizzou’s leadership is working closely with students, faculty and staff to address their needs, solve problems and keep everyone safe.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk with UM System President and Mizzou Interim Chancellor, Dr. Mun Choi. We discuss how Mizzou is responding to the demands of social distancing and the many ways our community is still upholding its critical missions of research, teaching, inclusive excellence and engagement.

Though social distancing has changed the way we live our lives, it hasn’t changed the way our community members care for one another. To address critical, ongoing needs, Tigers have found innovative ways to adapt their talents — and existing University resources — to support our Mizzou family. Whether it’s sewing masks or delivering food and other essentials, Tigers are showing that we can overcome any challenge by sticking together.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk with Lida Aflatoony, a PhD candidate in the Department of Textile and Apparel Management, who is part of a Mizzou team making personal protective equipment for health care workers; and Mathew Swan, a senior majoring in political science, who is the director of Tiger Pantry. Together, we discuss how Mizzou students are finding creative ways to volunteer and help our community during this unprecedented time.

Tigers Support Tigers

The Mizzou family experienced so many changes as our campus rapidly adapted to new social distancing requirements. Tigers rose boldly to this unprecedented challenge and adapted as courses moved from classrooms, labs and studios to virtual meeting spaces. Despite being apart, our students are still discovering new opportunities to achieve excellence and support their fellow classmates.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk over Zoom with Daniel Serres, who is a senior majoring in political science and communication; and Toyin Jackson, a junior who is majoring in food science. Together, these students discuss the transition from in-person classes to remote learning and the innovative ways Tigers are staying connected to our Mizzou community.

Collaboration at a Distance

We are building the future of health care in Missouri and embracing technology that connects beyond campus to improve lives. The NextGen Precision Health Institute will link rural clinics with experts from around the world. These partnerships will revolutionize how we serve our state —but they are just the latest way we are making excellent care accessible to everyone. Our community also uses teleconferencing to support medical professionals and social media to inform mental health outreach. All of these resources help Missourians and bring more value to society.On this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast, Chancellor Cartwright talks with Dr. Karen Edison, who is professor emerita of dermatology and senior medical director of the Missouri Telehealth Network and Show-Me Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (Show-Me ECHO); and Kelli Buchanan, who is a master’s student in public health. Together, they discuss how our faculty, staff and students use MU innovations to create a healthier world.

Boundless Health Care

At the University of Missouri, our students can get an exceptional, hands-on education with access to world-class faculty, state-of-the-art spaces and even a working preschool classroom. But a Mizzou education also goes beyond the classroom. Innovative teaching tools such as virtual reality, online programs and more create comprehensive and immersive learning opportunities that aren’t limited to our campus — or even to Missouri. Classroom Innovation

Every day across campus, Tigers combine their creativity with groundbreaking research to push the boundaries of education and scholarship. At Mizzou, an ice cream parlor can also be a cutting-edge laboratory, and a floral shop can be a thriving classroom as well as a successful business. This capacity to bridge disciplines and forge new innovations inside and outside the classroom is what makes our community —and their successes —Mizzou Made. On this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast, Chancellor Cartwright talks with two students in MU’sCollege of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources: Emily Koch is a junior majoring in agricultural education who works at Tiger Garden, a floral shop run by the Division of Plant Sciences; and Grace Frisella is a junior majoring in food science and nutrition who works at Buck’s Ice Cream, an ice cream parlor run by the Food Science Program. They discuss the ways art, science, entrepreneurship and learning come together at Mizzou to give students the tools they need to excel.

Art of Science

Hands-on learning is the bedrock of a Mizzou education. Since 1911, the Department of Geological Sciences’Branson Field Laboratory has regularly hosted students from Mizzou and other universities across the country. This lab remains the longest continuously running site of its kind in the United States. Whether it’s our geology researchers analyzing rocks in the field or visiting artists mentoring students on campus, Tigers continue to enhance society with the work they do inside the classroom and around the world.On this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast, Chancellor Cartwright talks with Miriam Barquero-Molina, the director of the Geology Field Program and assistant teaching professor in the Department of Geological Sciences, and Kimberly Moore, a doctoral student in the Department of Geological Sciences. Tectonic Tigers

Student government is a more than 100-year tradition at Mizzou — that’s older than Memorial Stadium or even our beloved mascot, Truman the Tiger. The Missouri Students Association (MSA) is one of the largest student government organizations on campus, and it represents undergraduates from across the disciplines. MSA members contribute to standing committees alongside faculty and staff and pass legislation that helps guide our university’s collective future.On  this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast, Chancellor Cartwright talks with two MSA leaders: President Jennifer Sutterer, a senior double majoring in political science and philosophy; and Senate Speaker Jacob Addington, a senior majoring in journalism. MSA: The Path of Student Legislation

For 180 years, the University of Missouri has pioneered new advances in education. We taught the first course on engineering west of the Mississippi River, and our world-class School of Journalism developed the revolutionary Missouri Method of learning by doing. As our community continues to evolve, so do our learning practices and resources. Since the Apollo Missions, our Mizzou family has been a national leader in space research, and we continue to open up new pathways for interstellar discovery and reshape the way we think about life on Earth.On this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast, Chancellor Cartwright talks with Linda Godwin, a former NASA astronaut and retired professor of physics and astronomy, and Jordyn Lucas, a PhD student in biochemistry.
