Sometimes there are requirements. They don't just accept anyone, people can be turned away. PROS You get experience, especially if you're running into people who speak your target language. The experience volunteering in your target language makes you more comfortable talking. You get to add that foreign language volunteer experience on your resume. Foreign language volunteering on my resume helped me secure contracts for other foreign language jobs. You make friends and gain job references from the places you volunteered at. You give back to the community of your target language Your vocabulary increases, especially in the field in which you are volunteering. There is no pressure to speak perfectly, they can't fire you. Just do your best...they appreciate any help they can get. If you pass the background check and they prefer a foreign language speaker, you may not be turned away, just because it's free help. Teacher vs. Self-Teaching Listen as I weigh the pros and cons of each. OUTLINE Private Tutor/Teacher PROS Has advanced knowledge of the language and can answer questions that might not be in the book you're learning from Can clarify things that might be in the book that you're having difficulty understanding Plus is a native teacher can advise you on the culture of the language CONS Can cost money - around $30/30 min May not be a good fit for your personally Self-Teaching PROS You can dictate or create your own curriculum or plan You get to decide how much money you will contribute to your journey CONS There will be some things you will miss out on and you have to be ok with that. If you're not, seek a tutor on that particular issue that you're having a problem with. You will have to take TIME to create your own curriculum. If you can't do that, seek a language learning coach to guide you. You might have to adjust your curriculum often before you get it right. CONCLUSION At the end, you'll have to decide: What you're trying to accomplish When you plan on accomplishing it The best way to accomplish it There is no wrong or right answer. Someone told me once that I could never learn a language well enough unless I immersed myself in a study abroad program overseas. Well, besides English, I speak Spanish, Portuguese, and am learning Italian. I read a little bit of French and Romanian as well. The kicker is that I've never traveled out of the U.S. When I started my journey there were no social media support for black women learning languages. Initially, I had no emotional nor financial support either. I had to figure it out. Once I did, I moved on to the next language goal. Here's to language learning on a budget!
