This is an audiobook of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, narrated by Peter John Keeble. There’s few lines in literature as famous as “Pleasure sir, may I have some more?” But if there’s one thing Charles Dickens knows, it’s how to write a novel that, almost two centuries after its publication, is still going strong and being adapted. Oliver Twist (full title: Oliver Twist; or, the Parish Boy’s Progress) tells the story of a young orphan, Oliver, who has some not-so-good luck. He’s taken in by several cruel “benefactors”, shuffled around and getting lost, until he finally lands at a place he might call him. At heart, though, he’s a kind boy who doesn’t wish to do ill. It’s all well and good, then, that he gets a happy ending. Still, he did reach happily ever after easily. Dickens explores what the life of a young outcast was like in the early-1800s, illustrating the practice of child labor at a time where workers rights weren’t exactly the talk of the town. Poverty & social class are both major themes in the book. The highly stratified nature of pre-Victorian and Victorian times led to a divisive class structure that wasn’t easily traversed. While it was a time of rapid expansion and industrialization, it also meant that the least fortunate and able were left by the wayside, or worse. As in most cases, the well off were few and far between; most had to subsist or scrounge to stay alive. This, in turn, led to crime – another important theme. A naive Oliver is roped into schemes where, after they fail, he is left as a patsy. Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

This is an audiobook of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, by Elizabeth Klett. First published in 1837, Jane Eyre had a powerful impact on prose fiction. It focuses on the moral & spiritual development of its main character, Jane Eyre, through first-person narrative. Its importance and influence was highlighted in 2003, when the novel was ranked #10 in the BBC’s The Big Read survey. The novel has five distinct parts: the beginning, where Jane is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her schooling, where she makes friends but is still oppressed; as a governess, where she falls in love with her employer; her time at Moor House, where she is proposed to; and her reunion with her employer as a governess. Throughout each of the parts, Brontë brings up the eminent issues & ideas of the time and provides her perspective (often critical) on them. The full title of the novel is Jane Eyre: An Autobiography. While a work of fiction, it’s obvious that Brontë’s own experiences helped shape the book. While at school, Jane befriends Helen Burns. Helen eventually dies of tuberculosis in Jane’s arms. The character of Helen is based on Charlotte Brontës own sister, Maria Brontë, who died at 11 of the same disease. This is an audiobook of The Republic by Plato, narrated by Bob Neufeld. The Republic by Plato, written around 380 BC, is the best known work of Plato as well as one of the most widely read & influential works of philosophy ever written. It is written as a dialogue – specifically, a Socratic dialogue. The Republic by Plato

This is an audiobook of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, narrated by Elizabeth Klett. Mr. Bennet has five daughters, but his property can only be passed onto male heirs (because it is entailed). In order for one of the daughters to support the family, she would have to get married (because of the way the entailment worked, the husband would then have to adopt the surname of his father-in-law). This sets the stage for the novel, which deals with themes such as marrying for love and not wealth or prestige and the role of wealth and class in her society. Over the years, Pride and Prejudice has become one of the most revered, talked about, and adapted books ever. Like many of her other works, it has been tapped for film adaptations multiple times and has set the stage for hundreds of literary adaptations. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

This is an audiobook of A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay, narrated by Mark Nelson. A Voyage to Arcturus is a novel by David Lindsay, published in 1920. It was an influence on C. S. Lewis, for whom it served as an inspiration for the Space Trilogy. Via Lewis, it was also an influence on J. R. R. Tolkien. Apart from them, Clive Barker as referred to A Voyage to Arcturus as a masterpiece, while the philosopher Colin Wilson called it “the greatest novel of the 20th century”. At least some of the praise likely stems from the complexity of the novel. A intricate mix of fantasy, philosophy, and science fiction, A Voyage to Arcturus tackles complex issues such as good, evil, and existence itself. Throughout the story, the main character, Maskull, goes through many different regions on the planet Tormance, a fictional planet that orbits around Arcturus, a star. Maskull is, like many people, searching for the meaning of life. His travels through Tormance introduce him to different belief systems and mind states. As is the case with several classics, A Voyage to Arcturus did not sell particularly well during Lindsay’s own time. Even to get it published, Lindsay had to reduce his work by 15,000 words (which are now thought to be permanently lost). Out of the printing of 1,430 copies, only 596 sold. Through later printings, the book eventually gained in popularity and influence. This is an audiobook of Fairy Prince and Other Stories by Eleanor Hallowell Abbott, narrated by Nan Dodge. Eleanor Hallowell Abbott, granddaughter of children’s author Jacob Abbott, was probably destined to become an author. Not only was her grandfather an author, but her mother, Clara, was an editor of a journal called Literary World. While she struggled a bit in the beginning, her writing was eventually accepted by Harper’s Magazine which ran some of her poetry. This led to further acclaim for her short stories (by her death in 1958, she had written 75 of them) and her novels (of which she wrote 14). Fairy Prince, and Other Stories is one such collection of her shorts. Her papers are held by The University of New Hampshire Library. While she is mostly forgotten toady (as are a great many authors and poets), she was nonetheless a prolific writer. Fairy Prince and Other Stories by Eleanor Hallowell Abbott

This is an audiobook of Child Christopher and Goldilind the Fair by William Morris, narrated by Phil Benson. Fantasy has a long history of successive influence. The past heavily influences the present; one can easily connect Alice in Wonderland to The Wizard of Oz, or see the influence of George MacDonald’s goblins in The Princess and the Goblin on Tolkien’s goblins in The Hobbit - or the Anglo-Saxon past in general on The Lord of the Rings. What came before is taken and wrought anew. One can draw a straight line from Child Christopher and Goldilind the Fair by William Morris to Prince Caspian by C. S. Lewis. While the latter is more popular, one can see the influence of the former shine through. Both are about royal heirs who, through one set of machinations or another, are denied their birthright and must get it back. But there is another, longer line to be drawn. Child Christopher and Goldilind the Fair is, itself, derived from the medieval Lay of Havelok the Dane, written sometime towards the end of the 13th century. Havelock and Goldborow are both displaced in their youth but are later returned to the throne. The past is always felt in the present. The lines might curve and bend, but they are always there, linking the present to the past - whether the inspiration comes from a work a hundred or a thousand years ago, it hardly matters.
