Peter Kitson discusses his new research project on writing about opium in the romantic period. He puts famous works like Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of An English Opium Eater and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" in the context of a much wider body of writing about opium: both medical writings on its effects on the body and political and economic writings on opium as a commodity traded around the world. The podcast ends with a reading of a passage from De Quincey's Confessions of An English Opium Eater.
