The Trinity – Episode #31 In This Episode... We return from our little hiatus. We are busy realigning our schedules so we can get back to bringing you edifying content every week. We come back talking about the Trinity. Segment 1 Why did we being the episode with the Athanasian Creed instead of Scripture? Early on, the Trinity was important. Christians are fiercely monotheistic, but we worship The Father, The Son, and The Spirit. The word Trinity is not in the Bible and Tertullian is credited as being the first to use the latin word trinity. These episodes are born of John C. reading while on vacation where he came up with questions for us to talk about on the podcast. Segment 2 Why is the Trinity important? This is how God has revealed himself in Scripture. Also, other doctrines rest on the Trinity. In discussion of the Three Persons of the Trinity, John uses a big word, Perichoresis. We come up with a good working definition of the Trinity using Systematic Theology by Louis Berkhoff. Segment 3 We begin looking at how we logically come to the doctrine of the Trinity. Did it being in the New Testament or the Old? A number of Scripture is read to come to the conclusion that the Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Spirit is God. We move on to distinguishing all Three Persons from Each Other. Jesus, Man – Episode #27 In This Episode... In the next two weeks we talk about the two natures of Jesus. This week, we focus on Jesus's humanity. Today, Mormonism is the fastest growing “Christian” religion in the world. We’ve been visited by Jehovah’s Witnesses. They both speak of Jesus. What makes our Jesus different? Does it matter? Important questions we felt needed answering. 01:04 – Segment 1 We start the discussion by talking about how Jesus is the most popular Sunday school answer. Why is it important to talk about Jesus Himself? John C. has been shunned by members of his family as they are Mormon. The wrong Jesus can’t save anybody, therefore, this is an important topic. Jesus has two natures, so we’ll discuss them in two episodes. We give an overview of the next two weeks including a definition of nature. How do you pronounce Chalcedonian? The branches have a brief discussion on a history lesson about the early church and coming up with a formulation and battling heresy. The ditches that can occur with this topic land you in heresy. 09:37 – Segment 2 We go through the various characteristics of Jesus’ human nature. Jesus is truly God and truly Man in one Person. The glorified state of Jesus' body is discussed. We feel sorry for James, the brother of Jesus. A relevant discussion on Nestorianism and other early church heresies is had. 23:46 – Segment 3 There is a further discussion on heresy and why it logically doesn’t make sense to separate Jesus’ natures. We continue to discuss the different attributes of the humanity of Jesus. Next, we ask, did Jesus have a soul? All of this is fine, but we finally get into the why. So, why does Jesus need to be truly Man? It brings great rest that Jesus understands what we go through, and we have all the tools that Jesus used to not sin. The lie is I can watch and not be affected or I can just fast forward. John J. demeans Christian entertainment. The branches discuss legalism and how to avoid that in the quest for purity. John J. mentions a podcast that talks about this topic frequently, Theocast It comes down to a matter of conscience. James asks “What is it about this show that is satisfying?” in order to get to the heart issue. This leads to Root sins vs. fruit sins. The Idol Babbler gave us a resource by suggesting if we are looking with lust, start to pray for that person. Sexual sin is something everyone deals with. Accountability is an important resource, but trust needs to be there The solution is the gospel. Repentance and Forgiveness – Episode #20 In This Episode... 02:24 – Segment 1 The branches start by discussing what is repentance. We speak about changing our mind to realign our thoughts to God’s thoughts and move in that direction. How does this jive with Faith alone? Is repentance a one time thing? The Christian life is a repenting life. What about God repenting in the Old Testament? How does an unchanging God change His mind?, 11:06 – Segment 2 How do repentance and forgiveness go together? First, we talk about what repentance is not. Then, it starts with a heart overwhelmed by Godly sorrow. Unless the spirit of God is present, there can’t be true repentance. What if I repent and keep doing the same sin? The heart condition is important for true repentance. That’s why repentance comes from God. An unbeliever can’t repent unless God regenerates. 24:41 – Segment 3 How long does repentance take? Other sins, such as pride, can get in the way of repentance. Church discipline is necessary because of unrepentant sin. Thomas Watson calls repentance a spiritual medicine made up of six special ingredients. 28:49 – Segment 4 We move onto forgiveness. No, 70 times 7 doesn’t mean you only have to forgive someone 490 times. We discuss the different relationships in which we ask for forgiveness. What are the responsibilities of the two people in a moment where forgiveness is being sought. What is the person doesn’t ask for forgiveness. A picture of what unforgiveness looks like is painted and how it contrasts. John C. with the quote of the day, “The ultimate purpose of forgiveness is to heal the relationship.” Forgiveness with non believers and does forgiveness mean putting yourself in a bad position? A good picture of the forgiveness process is shown in Lysa TerKeurst’s relationship and divorce with her husband.
