We love art and have collected some vintage art over the years that we absolutely love. Chandler says it in the episode, but art really is one of the easiest ways to express who you are and who your family is in your home. 32. Design Basics Series - Art

Today we’re talking about something that most anyone who is into interior design loves to talk about - accessories! Accessories are a big part of what makes YOUR home feel like YOUR style. Whether that’s books, containers, art, greenery, or fun decorative objects, accessories make a huge statement in your home. As usual, Chandler shares a few of her “rules of thumb” about accessories on this week’s episode. 31. Design Basics Series - Accessories

Textiles are a part of home design that can often be overlooked but are incredibly important. There isn’t a simpler way to establish your design style in your home than with textiles. As you’ll learn (or may already know), textiles are simply fabrics in your home - pillows, window treatments, bedding, etc. On today’s episode, we’ll hit the basics of using textiles in your home and give a couple tips and tricks to help you use them effectively. Timestamps 04:38 - Dad Joke of the Week 05:14 - Introduction to Textiles.    Definition of Textile: A type of cloth or woven fabric   07:46 - Window Treatments A common mistake to avoid: hanging curtains too low and too close together. Hang your window treatments HIGH and WIDE.    The ideal width for curtains is 2-2.5x the width of your windows   12:11 - Pillows A common mistake to avoid: pillows made to match your sofa.    13:21 - Tips for mixing patterns with pillows. Pillows generally fall into 4 categories: organic, geometric, textured, solid. You don’t want two of the same type in a single place. If you are going to do two in the same category, you want them to be different scales.    17:49 - Bedding A common mistake to avoid: not layering.   19:28 - Standard bedding setup. Duvet and cover, full-sized bed blanket, regular shams,  euro shams, and a decorative bolster or lumbar pillow. On a queen-size bed, you want 2-3 euro shams, whereas on a king-size bed you want 3-4    23:10 - Rugs A common mistake to avoid: getting a rug that is too small.

This is the third episode in our Design Basics Series, and today we are talking about furniture! Like most people, we had a shoestring budget when we were just out of college and freshly married. We bought plenty of furniture that was function over form and super cheap, but we found that those things really aren’t built to last. As we’ve grown our business and worked with talented carpenters/woodworkers like Kyle Levy of Broken Compass Woodworking (remember episode 8?), our appreciation for the fine craftsmanship of quality furniture has really grown. There is a time and a place for places to invest in quality and places where you might not want to. It’s important to think of your furniture as an investment rather than just an expense. We hope that this episode helps you think through your own home and how you can best invest in pieces that will last.      This is the first episode of our Design Basics Series where we are hitting the basics of designing your home. In this series we will talk about paint colors, picking furniture and layouts, textiles, art, and accessories, but our first episode of the series is on lighting. We are ALL spending a lot more time at home these days. Wow, has it really been almost 4 months since our last episode? In some ways, it feels like it’s been 4 years, and we want to give you an update about what has been going on in our life!
