We are in the final chapters of Hebrews where the author is calling these Hebrew Christians to faith and endurance by building on the great cloud of witnesses from Hebrews 11 and reminding them of their God who was faithful to them. In chapter 12, we see the push towards endurance in daily living until the Lord ushers in his completed kingdom someday. In chapter 13, we wrap up with concluding exhortations and remarks for this audience and we hone in on how they apply to us today.   SHOW NOTES

Week 10 | Hebrews 12 & 13

In Chapter 11, we look at the famous “Hall of Faith” in all of its gritty glory. We see models of faithful yet imperfect men and women taking their next right steps of faith often in trying circumstances; all without seeing the end result and only being able to  trust the promise given to them. As New Covenant believers, we get to see the resolution to their faith - we see what was promised - our resurrected Christ. And we get to partake in the better, more complete relationship with Christ. We all as a community (past, present & future) look forward together when we all are made perfect and when creation will be set right when the Lord returns again for the final time.   SHOW NOTES

Week 9 | Hebrews 11

In chapter 10, the author repeats the importance of Christ’s once for all sacrifice and what that should elicit from us: faith, hope, love, and obedience. SHOW NOTES

Week 8 | Hebrews 10:1-39

In chapter 9 we see that our great High Priest has offered himself as our better sacrifice which ushers us into the better Tabernacle (Heaven). We have direct access to the throne of God through Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice. SHOW NOTES

Week 7 | Hebrews 9

In Week 6 we look at how the Old Testament figure of Melchizedek foreshadows Christ’s fulfillment as our King of Righteousness and Peace. We see that both Melchizedek and Christ are from a different priestly order than the Levitical order and that they are both Kings. With this new order, the author of Hebrews makes the argument that a new covenant was then needed through the fulfillment of Christ which nullifies the old law. Christ as our priest-king reigns forever in the better tent (heaven) and offers us a better covenant of hope based on better promises. So, therefore, it’s a continuation of the author’s argument to the original audience to stand firm because they have the better thing. SHOW NOTES

Week 6 | Hebrews 7:1-8:13

In Week 5, we pick up in the middle of the warning to grow in maturity. The author urges the Hebrews to be carried forward by God to maturity, to bear fruit, and to live out their better salvation because it is Jesus who guarantees the new better oath and covenant rendering the old one obsolete. He ends the passage by reminding them that the way through trouble is not by backtracking but through anchoring more fully in the promise of salvation through Christ.  SHOW NOTES

Week 5 | Hebrews 6

In Week 4, we continue our rhythm of “Jesus is better” followed by a warning. This week, we examine Jesus as our better High Priest, seated at the right hand of God on high and able to sympathize with our human weakness. We set the stage for our next warning at the end of Chapter 5 - a warning against falling away from the faith - with a contrast between the mature and immature Christian. SHOW NOTES

Week 4 | Hebrews 4:14 - 5

In this episode, we consider Jesus as better than Moses. Moses was Israel’s deliverer, but he still struggled with disbelief and disobedience in his humanity, to the point that he wasn’t able to enter into the rest of the promised land. But Christ is our better deliverer with his perfect sacrifice and his better rest. We can enter that rest with our obedience to Christ through our belief and our submission to scripture which reveals our sin and weakness so that we can draw near to the throne of grace to receive help for those areas. Week 3 | Hebrews 3 - 4:13

In this episode, we see that Jesus has been appointed by God and that makes him superior to the angels. We are warned that we should not drift from the gospel even when times get rough. We must stay close to our Savior because he made the way of defeating death, being our perfect sacrifice, and experiencing humanity so that he can empathize as our high priest. SHOW NOTES
