What does it take for a woman to get a safe abortion in India? When does the court intervene, and in whose favour? Which case of abortion is considered worthy of being granted by Medical Boards? In this audio documentary, Menaka Rao, an award-winning health journalist, examines abortion through the lenses of health, law and disability. Using research on court procedures and interviews with specialists and stakeholders, including women who have had or wanted an abortion, Menaka lays out the socio-legal landscape of a woman's need for a safe abortion. Judicial interventions and exceptions in abortion cases can give us insight on how the state perceives motherhood, sexuality, disability and women's health, and how a pregnant woman often needs to become a 'victim' in the eyes of law in order to exercise her right over her own body. Dhulai: Menaka on Abortion in India

My workplace is a prison. My client is the prisoner. Who am I? There are many kinds of social workers, but the kind that works in prisons is often asked, "Why would anyone work for prisoners?" "Is my son doing okay? Ask him to come meet me next week." "Madam, there is no vacancy in the shelter home, especially for a mentally disabled woman. Now what to do?" A social worker spends her days going in and out of prisons, shelter homes, and courts answering these and many more questions. As the person who mediates between the criminal justice system and a woman 'caught' by the system, answering these questions, and making the system legible is a part of her work. But what questions does she carry with her? How does she manage to see the human behind the crime? What goes on inside the head of someone who is at the heart of the criminal justice system? Over the last 10 months, we have been conducting writing workshops with 5 social workers from Prayas, a field action project which does social work intervention in the Criminal Justice System. It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). This podcast features the letters that emerged from the prompt : "If you could write a letter to anyone, who would you write to and what is it that you want to tell them?" Letters are narrated, written, and edited by Aruna Nimse, Komal Abhishek Tawde, Surekha Sale, Kalpana Katare, and Krupa Shah. Special Thanks to Sharon Menezes for proposing this idea and putting us in touch with this amazing group of women. Workshop Facilitators are Madhuri Adwani, Astha Bamba, and Juhi Jotwani. Scripting and Production by Madhuri Adwani and Juhi Jotwani Cover Artwork by Kalki Studio Support: Wavelength Studio, Andheri

Letters from the Criminal Justice System

Savarnas don’t know caste—the same way a fish does not know water. When you breathe, see, feel, and thrive within a system, it is difficult to notice it, let alone know it. How does a fish then know water? By starting to know itself, of course. When Rohan chooses this way to learn about caste, he ends up learning a lot about himself. As Rohan and his friends open up about their experiences of caste, caste moves beyond titles and reservations and starts becoming like water—shape-shifting, yet ever-present. Listen to Rohan in this education edition episode as he looks for caste in his own memories and, in the process, pulls out reflective voices and experiences. Rohan has participated in the EduLog programme with The Third Eye for its Education Edition. The EduLog mentored 12 writers and image-makers from India, Nepal and Bangladesh to remember—in the present continuous—their experience of education from a feminist lens. Stay Home, Kitna Surakshit - Gender Based Violence and the Bystander Syndrome

If more people are online, where does the violence go? Apparently, also online. In Episode 2 of Stay Home, Kitna Surakshit?, Madhuri meets Bishakha Datta of Point of View and Uttanshi Agarwal of One Future Collective, to try and make sense of our digital selves, transgressions of online identities, the public-private-corporate dance over our data. And they help us see that there is way more we can do, legally, in response to technology-enabled gender based violence. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nirantar-trust93/message

Stay Home, Kitna Surakshit - Gender Based Violence During Lockdown

When Muskan said “Hamare yahaan yeh sab chalta hi nahi hai” (These things aren’t allowed in our areas), we couldn’t help but notice that she said it for feeling love as well as anger. Shubhangani who had joined the zoom call from Kekri, Rajasthan chimed in by saying that she feels pushed around, like a football, by elders. If there is no space to express and feel either love or anger, then what does the heart do? Listen to these adolescent voices as they tell us exactly as their heart feels. ‘Mera Chashma, Mere Rules’, a three-episode podcast produced by The Third Eye in collaboration with Partners for Law in Development (PLD), brought 4 girls—between the ages of 18–20, hailing from different religions, states (Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh), social and familial setups—to discuss the range of adolescent experiences which seldom become the subject of policy discussion. Script and Production: Madhuri AdwaniVoices: Muskan, Sahiba, Shomya and ShubhanginiFacilitation: Kanika and MadhuriIllustrations: AnupriyaCover Image editing: Sadia Saeed The grant for the project has been supported by UNFPA India. Sahiba learns from Google, calls it her teacher and navigates her everyday—from getting things done to finding about her mental health—on Google. Mera Chashma, Mere Rules - Main Kab Badi Huyi

In feminist organisations and within the academic discourse, we sit with the term ‘safe space’ quite often and roll it in our mouth to reiterate how multifarious and ever changing that term is. But when we asked Muskan and Shomya what it means to them and where they feel the most at home, they responded that these were spaces they have created away from home. 20-year-old Muskan from Samastipur, Bihar and 19-year-old Shomya from Thane, Maharashtra joined this conversation on a Zoom call from their safe spaces where the former had children reading in the background and the latter had a group of friends moving in and out of the computer room. Meet them as they entrust us with the tale of how this space came to be. Mera Chashma, Mere Rules - Meri Surakshit Jagah Kahaan Hai

Tumhari chahat kya hai? Tum kya chahti ho?” (What do you desire?) When was the last time we asked an adolescent what they think about their desires? How can we see their lives from their perspective? Like you, we didn’t know either. So, we decided to meet them online to listen to them with their starry, triangle and heart-shaped Chashma (glasses) on. When we started our zoom call with Muskan, Shomya, Sahiba and Shubhangani with this question, we knew we were venturing into a gully of their thoughts and feelings. Mera Chashma, Mere Rules - Trailer

We have been meeting single women in small-town and rural India in our Ekal podcast series. In Episode 4, we meet a collective of single women in Marathwada, Maharashtra. What happens when the singular turns into a collective? The answers were manifold. Along with solidarity, sisterhood and revolution, the collective opened an ekal-hood that encompasses ideas of kaam (work), aaraam (rest), bandhuta (friendship), gyaan (knowledge), samadhan (resolution), astitva (existence) and adhikaar (rights). In our fourth episode of 'Ekal In The City', meet the single women of Beed, Nanded, Tuljapur, Osmanabad, Shirgapur, Kaij and Ambajogai, who have helped us see various ways of being, and new imaginations of living. We thank all the women of Ekal Mahila Sangathan who shared their stories with us, CORO from Mumbai who brought us together, our translator Vidya who helped us through the barrier of language and Sampada who lent her voice to a song from the film Kasav. Ekal In The City Ep 4: Marathwada ki Ekal Mahila Sangathan

In this episode, Virginia Woolf's A Room Of One's Own travels to the tehsil of Ajmer, Kekri in Rajasthan, and meets Annu, a 31-year-old woman who gives it her own meaning. What does this room look like today? Annu talks about being ekal (single) in her room on a terrace, where she embarks on building a relationship with herself and her small town, more romantic and introspective than any other relationship she has been in. Annu's every day in this room, through the lens of a single woman, is poetic. She says 'Ek hi kamre mein maine bahut jagah bana li hai (I have made a lot of space in my one room)' and then takes us to multiple spaces she inhabits in a single day. What does it mean to have a space for yourself in the kasbah of Kekri? Tune in as Annu takes us to her land—bhaavnagari—the city of feelings. Artwork by Nandini Moitra Sound track: Bhaavnagri by Anahita

Ekal In The City Ep 3: Akele Aur Chalna Chahiye

What does it mean to be a single woman, when it’s not in a metropolis? What are the experiences of being single, without the romanticisation of the urban? What is the nature of singlehood that may not yet be defined, but may be as rich as life itself? How single women make their homes and live and love in smaller towns and villages, is what we set out to document in Ekal in the City. We explore different kinds of ekal - being single - to celebrate life in its many ways of being.In the second episode of the series, Madhuri talks to two single women from Uttar Pradesh - Seema, a 27 years old journalist from Banda who works for a Hindi Digital News Channel - Bharat 1 News and Shabo, a 28 years old mobiliser in Vanangana, a rural community based women's rights collective, located in Bundelkhand and who is also an informal worker, working part time in the pad-making factories. They tell us how they found a family of ekal in the city. Exploring natal family violence, divorce, finding of community and sisterhoods in the bylanes of Bundelkhand, this episode looks at what may emerge from violent histories for women, and often, the answers may be as surprising as the women themselves.

Ekal In The City Ep 2: Ekal Parivaar

The recorder is not merely a tool of documentation, but rather a creative instrument that demands we rethink, re-listen, and reflect on our listening patterns. In asking who the recorder is placed in front of, what it catches that we miss, and what we weave together that it cannot pick up, our team at The Third Eye deepens its obsession with the recording of knowledge. Our ‘Audio Documentaries’ are sound-and-narrative explorations voiced from the field. These nonfiction narratives are held in a feminist recitation that moves through the personal, the collective and the political. With a story of a father revisiting his life, or one of a single woman in Kekri, Rajasthan, or then with the feelings of people home alone during the Covid-19 pandemic, these insightful, empathetic and creative portraits of realities of the ground both hold their own, and contribute to the mainstream discourse.
