It’s free agency day in the NHL and that means we’re back with an emergency episode of Oilersnation Radio to make sense of everything that’s happened here in Edmonton and around the NHL. On this week’s show, we looked at Zach Hyman's deal, the Ethan Bear trade, Tyson Barrie's extension, and a whole lot more. To kick off today's podcast, we jumped in with a look at Zach Hyman's seven-year contract with the Oilers and what it means to this team going forward into the 2021-22 season. Did everybody like the deal? Did they hate the deal? Next up, we looked at the trade that sent Ethan Bear out of town and broke down all of the reasons why Oilers fans are devastated by the move that sent the former fifth-round pick out of town. There's been some word on the street that Bear hasn't been in the best shape and that it's been a point of contention for the Oilers, but does that mean it makes sense to move him after a down year? We also dove into Cody Ceci's new contract and whether or not it's fair to expect that he's able to fill in for the recently departed Adam Larsson. He played well in Pittsburgh last year but not so much the year before in Toronto, so what will the Oilers be getting? It's a fair question. Sticking with the Oilers, we also looked at the rumours revolving around a Mikko Koskinen trade despite none of us really thinking that anyone would want him, but strange things have happened so it will be interesting to wait and see how this shakes out. Lastly, we wrapped up the emergency podcast by bidding farewell to some of the Oilers that are moving on, including Jujhar Khaira and James Neal whose buyout became official earlier this morning.

Oilersnation Radio Episode 150 – The Free Agency Emergency Show

It’s been another crazy week around here and we’re back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to make sense of everything that’s happened here in Edmonton and around the NHL over the last seven days. On this week’s show, we looked at Adam Larsson walking away, the Seattle expansion draft, previewed the NHL Entry Draft, and a whole lot more. Kicking off this week's podcast, we jumped in with a conversation about Canadian markets having a hard time luring in free agents after Elliotte Friedman spoke to a GM that said more UFAs are avoiding the seven teams north of the border. Is there a solution that Canadian teams could implement that may soften the landing spot for UFAs? From there, we looked at Adam Larsson leaving for the Seattle Kraken on expansion day despite getting a larger contract offer from Edmonton. How did this happen? Why did he leave? Now that Larsson is gone, we discussed what the Oilers need to do to fill the hole left behind by the big swede. We also discussed Zach Hyman potentially coming to Edmonton on a long-term deal, and how excited we are to have a player like him on the roster. While the deal is certainly going to be too long, all of us are pretty excited about Hyman coming to town and think he will help. Will we complain down the line? Probably, but in the short term, there's no doubt that Hyman will make this team better. Sticking with the Oilers, we also looked at Mike Smith's new two-year deal after it was announced during the Holland press conference that the veteran netminder would be back for a couple of years before wrapping up the podcast with a quick preview of the NHL Entry Draft that kicks off tonight with round one. 

Oilersnation Radio Episode 149 – Adam Larsson walks, Zach Hyman, and the NHL Entry Draft

It's been a busy week here in Oil Country and we’re back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to make sense of everything that’s happened here in Edmonton and around the NHL over the last seven days. On this week’s show, we looked at the Duncan Keith trade, discussed some of the rumours surrounding the team right now, previewed the expansion draft, and a whole lot more. Kicking off the podcast, we got started with a conversation about the Duncan Keith trade that happened earlier this week and whether or not the Oilers will be able to have their newest defender cover the bet made to acquire him. If you look at Keith's analytics then you're probably going to be upset about the trade. If you're buying into the intangibles that he can bring to the locker room then you're probably pretty excited. Who is right? It's impossible to get the answer to that question until the new season starts, but I'd imagine that we're going to be arguing about this deal for the next two months anyway. From there, we looked at Zach Hyman being a player that Ken Holland has been rumoured to be interested in as a free agent and we tried to figure out whether or not the speculated numbers that are circulating would make for a good deal. Can you go long term on a guy with injury issues and coming off one of his better NHL seasons? We also looked at Gabriel Landeskog out of Colorado as a potential option the Oilers should be chasing, though, to a man, we all expect that he'll be back in Colorado when all is said and done.

The weekend is fast approaching and that means we’re back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to make sense of everything that’s happened here in Edmonton and around the NHL over the last seven days. On this week’s show, we welcomed DailyFaceoff's Frank Seravalli to help us break down the upcoming month, the Cup finals, and a whole lot more. Kicking off today's episode, we jumped in with a look at the upcoming buyout window and whether or not the Oilers are likely to use this as an opportunity to get rid of either James Neal or Mikko Koskinen. That's not to say that we liked the idea of carrying dead cap space on the books, but rather if it makes sense to use the initial savings to try and find a better option. From there, we dove into the rumours that Vladimir Tarasenko wants out of St. Louis and had a discussion about the Oilers potentially chasing the 40-goal man even with the rash of shoulder injuries he's had over the past couple of seasons. With rumours in mind, we welcomed NHL insider, Frank Seravalli, to help us make sense of what's going on around the league as we approach the expansion draft and free agency. Will the Oilers be as busy this offseason as we all hope they will be? Frank had the answers. Lastly, we wrapped up this week's podcast with another round of hot and cold performers as we discussed the good and bad news from the last seven days in what was an eventful one in the National Hockey League.

Previewing a Busy Month with Frank Seravalli

On this week’s show, we looked at the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contract extension, McDavid adds to his trophy case, and a whole lot more.   Kicking off the podcast, we jumped in with a look at the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contract extension and what it meant for both the organization and the fanbase. From the term to the dollars to where he slots in the lineup, we broke down every aspect of this new contract while also looking at some of the reactions that came out of the fanbase after the news broke. We also talked about what it means to have Nugent-Hopkins commit to the Oilers when so many free agents before him did not follow suit. From there, we spoke a little bit about the expansion draft and what the Oilers might be able to do with the open spaces they have on their protection list. Would it make sense to look at a team like the Bruins that may need help with their expansion list? What about the New York Islanders? We also touched on Connor McDavid adding to his trophy case after winning both the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award last night, sweeping the awards for the league's best player handily. Lastly, we wrapped up this week's podcast with a look at Oscar Klefbom's future after Ken Holland announced that he would be talking to the injured defender in the coming days as he makes his final preparations for the Seattle expansion draft.

On this week’s show, we looked at the Habs run to the finals, Oscar Klefbom's future, Mark Messier going to ESPN, and a whole lot more. Kicking off this week's podcast, we got started with a look at the Montreal Canadiens and whether or not there is anything to be learned from their miracle run to the Stanley Cup Finals. From their depth throughout the lineup to Carey Price's brilliance to the way all four of their lines were finding ways to contribute, the Habs got the most out of their roster because they had the depth to compete even when their best players weren't on the ice. Somehow that conversation about Montreal led us to talk about baseball for five minutes after several pitchers have stripped their clothes off during the past week as a result of the new rule where managers can check for stick stuff whenever they want. Getting back to hockey, we started in on yet another conversation about how terrible NHL referees have been lately, and whether or not there's going to be any change with the officiating moving forward. Next up, we ran through a bunch of Oilers housekeeping items that happened this past week before wrapping up the podcast with another edition of Hot and Cold performers.

Is it goaltending? Is it the ability to find some scoring wingers to bolster the offence? Are we comfortable with the same defensive group coming back? From there, we looked at the upcoming expansion draft and had a conversation about whether or not the GMs around the league have learned anything from the last time around. From there, we touched quickly on a couple of rumours surrounding the Edmonton Oilers these days, specifically RNH's negotiations seemingly moving forward and a quote from Tom Gazolla that suggested Taylor Hall may be open for a reunion. On this week’s show, we’re looking at cheering for Canada's team, and a whole lot more. Kicking off today's episode, we jumped in with a look at the final four in the NHL playoffs and gave our takes on who we think would be the ideal Stanley Cup Final. Vegas vs Tampa? Can Montreal keep their Cinderella run going? Will the Islanders be able to suffocate the Lightning the way they did with the Bruins? Speaking of the Montreal Canadiens, we also had a discussion about whether or not it makes sense to cheer for the Habs because they're the last team from north of the border. Next up, we looked at the NHL Award nominations that came out this week and whether or not there were any Oilers that got snubbed by not get a nod. Sticking with the Oilers, we looked at the hilarious reaction that happened amongst the fanbase after Devin Shore signed a two-year contract extension. Lastly, we we wrapped up this week's podcast by looking at some of the players the Oilers have already lost to Europe and whether or not we think any of the other free agents will end up following suit. 

Devin Shore Was a Lot of Arguing This Week

Happy Friday, everybody! With the offseason upon us and plenty of work to do to improve the roster, we’re back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to get you set for the weekend and make sense of everything that’s happened over the last seven days. On this week’s show, we're looking at the offseason wishlist, buyouts, the NHL playoffs, and a whole lot more. Kicking off this week’s episode, we got started with a look at which player would be the number one realistic target on our wishlist if we could make anything happen. Somehow this conversation turned into a wild argument as none of us could agree on who the Oilers should chase or even what position could use an upgrade. Needless to say, the Giant Question of the week got a little bit spicier than any of us would have expected as some very clear lines in the sand were drawn. Do we have to overspend for free agents? Trades? Despite the defence playing reasonably well in the playoffs is there room for improvement? Next up, we checked in on the Mark Scheifele situation in Winnipeg and whether or not his hit on Jake Evans was as bad as many folks thought and if the four-game suspension was merited. We also looked at the series between the Habs and Jets and expressed our surprise and bewilderment that there are actually penalties being called when that was not at all the case in round one. Finally, we wrapped off this week's show with an extended version of Hot and Cold performers as none of us could really keep things on the rails for more than a few seconds. 

The Oilers Offseason Wishlist Starts a Fight

Happy Friday, everybody! After taking a couple of days to calm down after getting swept by the Winnipeg Jets, we're back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to get you set for the weekend and make sense of everything that’s happened over the last few days. On this week’s show, we looked back at what the Oilers need this offseason, break down Ken Holland's press conference, looked around the NHL, and a whole lot more. Kicking off this week's episode, we got started with a look at what the Oilers' biggest need is as we enter the offseason and whether or not they'll be able to get it done. Be it another scoring winger that can play in the top-six or another goaltender or some more defensive depth, this is going to be a massive offseason for Holland and it's going to be endlessly interesting to see how he handles the pressure. From there, we looked at Ken Holland's press conference and tried to decode some of the stories and analogies he put out there, specifically if any of the old war stories from Detroit have anything to do with what's going on in the NHL here in 2021. Next up, we got into some of the rumours that are circling the Oilers these days as the team has a bunch of players that will need new contracts, so we tried to make sense of which guys seem likely to return and who may be looking for a new home next season.

What's next for the Ken Holland and the Oilers?

We decided to do two episodes of ONR per week during the playoffs and we didn't even get to our first before the Edmonton Oilers were bumped out after a crushing sweep at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets. Today, we try to make sense of what went wrong.   Kicking off the episode, we got started by trying to make sense of what just happened. The toughest part about the loss is that the Oilers probably deserved better than what they got even though that doesn't make the result feel any better. From line combinations to giveaways to blowing leads in the third period, there were plenty of reasons why the Oilers couldn't pull themselves back into the series and we struggled to figure out why that is when the team seemed to play with so much confidence during the regular season. We also talked about how wild it was to watch an entire series of prison rules where refs weren't really calling anything outside of murder, and even then it was questionable whether they'd pull the whistles out. That's not to say it's the refs' fault that the Oilers lost but it was endlessly frustrating watching a subpar product because the NHL doesn't seem to care about its own rulebook. Lastly, we tried to finish off the podcast with some positive vibes but I don't really know how effective that was as you will soon hear. All-in-all, it was incredibly disappointing that our first playoff episode of ONR was to recap a very disappointing playoff performance. 

The Debrief Episode

Happy Friday, everybody! The playoffs are underway and we're back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to get you set for the weekend and make sense of everything that's happened so far. On this week’s show, we looked back at Wednesday's loss against the Jets, offered a few ways the boys can rebound in game two, looked around the NHL, and a whole lot more. Kicking off this week's episode, we got started with a look at game 2 and what the Oilers need to do to make sure they even up the series before making their way to Winnipeg. Whether it's making life difficult for Connor Hellebuyck or throwing more hits on the Jets forwards, we had a bunch of different suggestions on what the Oilers could do to get themselves back in the win column. Looking ahead at tonight's rematch, we spoke a little bit about the good things Edmonton was able to do on Wednesday and what adjustments they'll have to make to get a better result. One thing that the Oilers will need to do is make sure they're taking advantage on the powerplay as it seems like there won't be many calls with the prison rules the refs seem happy to be running with. From there, we discussed Zack Kassian's quiet return to the lineup and how all of us expected more out of him in game one, especially since so many Oilers fans were disheartened by his disappearance in the play-in round last summer. Needless to say, #44 is on a short leash with the fanbase and it will be up to him to step up in a big way throughout the rest of the series. 

Bouncing Back in Game 2

Happy Friday, everybody! We're back with a playoff preview episode of Oilersnation Radio to get you set for the weekend and the first round of the playoffs that's set to go on Wednesday. On this week's show, we looked at the upcoming matchup against the Jets, offered a few playoff predictions, looked at our own keys to victory, and a whole lot more. To kick off this week's episode, we got started with a discussion about which player on the Oilers' roster that we think could turn into the 2021 edition of Fernando Pisani? Amazingly, none of us had the same answer as we all saw different reasons to pick four different players to fill that role. From there, we looked at what the Oilers need to do to beat the Jets in their opening series of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Needless to say, having the boys run through Winnipeg to the tone of a 7-2 season series win has given many of us confidence, but what details do the Oilers need to execute to keep the good times rolling? We also discussed whether or not we think Dave Tippett will go back to Mike Smith in their back-to-back games in games three and four of this series. From there, we gave our series predictions for all four divisions and took a few guesses as for which series winners were all but locked in. We also announced that we will be starting to do two episodes per week of ON Radio throughout the playoffs, starting on Tuesday, May 18th. 

The #MISSION21 Playoff Prediction Show

Happy Friday, everybody! For the second time this week, we're back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to get you set for the weekend with all of the Oilers takes and news that you could ever hope to have. This week, we looked at Smith and Puljujarvi's comeback seasons, Mikko Koskinen's new record, playoff matchups, and a whole lot more To kick off this week's episode, we jumped in with a look at two players that have had impressive comeback seasons with the Oilers after what happened in in 2019-20. Seeing as the Oilers have a few players that have played incredibly well, we spent a few minutes talking about which Edmonton Oiler has been the most impressive so far. From there, we jumped into the conversation that everyone was having this morning after Mikko Koskinen allowed four straight goals on the first four shots of the game, and whether or not it is a major deal in the grand scheme of things. We also took a few guesses at when the Oilers may go back to Koskinen after was undoubtedly a horrible night for the big Finn. Changing gears, we looked at the last four games on the Oilers schedule and whether or not there's anything left to play for outside of the McCentury chase. Sticking with the Oilers, we also looked at some of the new line combinations that came out in practice and whether or not it makes sense to change things up after only one loss. Lastly, we wrapped up this week's podcast with another look at the McCentury and whether or no he'll hit the 100 point plateau this weekend or if we'll be waiting a little bit longer. 

Koskinen, Line combos, and the McChase for 100

On Friday's podcast, we said that we would record a bonus episode of Oilersnation Radio as soon as the Oilers clinched a playoff berth and since that very thing happened last night in Vancouver, we're back with a mid-week bonus episode to break it all down.   To kick things off, we jumped in with a look at the big Clinchmas win over Vancouver and what the Oilers did right when the pressure was on to secure their playoff berth. Led by their captain, the Oilers did what was needed to get the job done and now we'll see our boys make the playoffs for only the second time (third if you count bubble days) in the last 15 years. Needless to say, the vibes were amazing last night on Oilers Twitter and we spent a few minutes talking about how excited the Nation is about the challenge to come. From there, we looked at the ridiculous run that Connor McDavid is on as he looks to be on another planet right now, untouchable by anyone else in this league, and it was a lot of fun to talk about the heater he's on. Next up, we looked at some of the Oilers' secondary pieces and how they're starting to perform at the level we need from them as we head into the playoffs. Lastly, we wrapped up today's bonus episode with some of our favourite playoff memories from years past while also hoping to add some new ones to the bank.
