Join us on this heart to heart about our Peruvian Identity, Culture, and returning back to our roots. Manny Fernandez originally from Lima, Peru is a dancer, director, choreographer, and activist who researches, illustrates and creates Afro- Peruvian art. He has worked with many dance companies such as Lakai Dance Theater, Benkadi Drum and Dance and Ballet Russes. He has done most of his training in Boston at the Roxbury center for performing arts, The Dance Complex and has traveled to Peru to train in Afro-Peruvian dance. Being involved in the diaspora dance community for 10 years has inspired him to bring more awareness of Afro-Peruvian culture. Join us on this heart to heart about identity and the importance of Peruvian Representation. Nathalie launched the Peruvians of USA podcast on July 28, 2020 with the goal to share the diversity of the Peruvian immigrant experience in the U.S., and explore what it means to be Peruvian in another country. She wants the podcast to serve as a collection of memories - as many of us are first-generation immigrants. Episodes are released every other week and the interviews are conducted in español, English, or Spanglish. The stories shared are deeply personal and each gives a new meaning to what it means to be a Peruvian immigrant. Nathalie hopes the audience listens with an open mind and heart. YERRRR! Last week’s Episode was all about my struggles living with Bipolar 2 disorder. On this week’s episode, I’ll be busting all the myths and misconceptions about Bipolar disorder. The reason I’m so passionate talking about this subject is because of the negativity that surrounds mental health disorder. What the media displays, the music we listen to, the movies we watch, the conversations we have. We’re so quick to call someone crazy and bipolar when they don't display the characteristics society has placed on us. We take these mental disorders and use them to belittle and insult. This is why it took me so long to talk about it and how it affects my way of life. But I’m not scared anymore. Living with Bi-Polar 2: The Myths & Misconceptions of Bipolar Disorder

This week's episode is super personal to me.  Join me as I have this heart to heart talk with myself while at the sametime try to debunk a whole bunch of myths and misconceptions about people living with Bipolar Disorder.  Bipolar disorder is a neurobiological brain disorder that affects approximately 2.3 million Americans today, or almost 1 percent of the population. Although bipolar disorder usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood, it can sometimes start in early childhood or as late as age 40 or 50. Bipolar II is similar to Bipolar I disorder, with moods cycling between high and low over time. However, in bipolar II disorder, the "up" moods never reach full-blown mania. The less-intense elevated moods in bipolar II disorder are called hypomanic episodes, or hypomania. It is not as extreme as a manic period. A person affected by bipolar II disorder has had at least one hypomanic episode in his or her life. Most people with bipolar II disorder suffer more often from episodes of depression. This is where the term "manic depression" comes from.
