Talked with Vaness Moss, Director of Communications, Palm Health Foundation and Joanna Peluso, Healthier Jupiter, Jupiter Medical Center about the foundations' Let's Move Initiative that happens in March. The entire month is dedicated to encourage residents to "get moving" to improve their health. There are all kinds of fun events scheduled throughout the month for the listeners to participate in "Let's Move". They have morning sunrise walks, walk with the mayor, zumba, dance events, fiesta days, 5k run/walk events. And Healthier Jupiter is doing a cool "Couch to 5k" training that's free for listeners to sign up at www.healthierjupiter.org. They can participate in Jupiter's Turtle Trot and Live Like Jake 5ks with a reduced entry fee if they've signed up for their "Couch to 5k" program. Talked with Maurice Costigan, Owner O'Shea's Irish Pub, Board Moonfest and Peter Gates, Cheif Retail Officer, Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County. Maurice and the business owners on the 500 block of Clematis are working with the City of WPB/Downtown Development Authority to activate the 500 block. They close the block to vehicular traffic starting at 5pm on Friday through 10pm on Sunday. Listeners can come out and enjoy music, night markets, dancing, karaoke contest, games on the streets, musical see saws, doggy brunch/yoga and more. Charities who'd like to be involved can reach out to them on Facebook, 500Blk or subculture coffee. Also, talked with Peter about the great work Habitat is doing in our area. They offer affordable housing to those families that qualify. Individuals/businesses can come out and volunteer to help build the homes alongside the family who is getting the home. Qualified individuals participate in a financial literacy program (Ramsey) and put in 400 hours of "sweat" equity including working in the retail stores. They have a lot of great programs and exhibitions running. Today is the last day to see the Georgia O'Keefe exhibition. Lauder Collection, Divine Beings, and Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers. Gladys is putting together some great Art After Dark programs including the popular First Friday Jazz. Talked with Dr. Ron Davis and Stacey DeLoye, Comm. Dir. from Scripps Research in Jupiter. Dr. Davis and his team are working on research advancements related to Alzheimer's and autism as well as other neurological diseases. There is a focus on finding therapeutic treatments that can prevent/stop Alzheimer's disease as right now only a few medications are available to the public and they don't provide long term treatment. Scripps has Calibr a component that helps them develop meds faster. Stacey is working on several different events where listeners can come and learn more about some of the research. The Library system has books, story time, crafts, creative spaces, all kinds of book clubs as well as digital service such as Fregal that are free for listeners to use. Talked with Charlene Farrington, Exec Dir., Spady Cultural Heritage Museum. Located in Delray Beach, FL they are located in the former home of Solomon D. Spady. The museum offers a wide variety of programs to the community from exhibits, to historical bus tours, Saturday kimetic yoga, youth programs and events. They currently have a graphic novel exhibition Eroica feature heroes of color running. This year listeners can participate in the book club where they'll dissucss the novel and then the graphic novel and can take a field trip to a comic book shop, and learn some of the techniques for writing/designing/coloring a comic. They have a lot of fun things happening in January to help listeners meet some of those New Year's resolutions. There are 5 different 5k Walk/Run events for those who want to be more fit. They have a couple historical reenactment events so we can learn from history. More opportunities for learning and giving back can be found by becoming a volunteer. Casey Cares provides upbeat, positive programming for critically ill children and their families. Events like popcorn/movie/pj night, football games, bowling, trips to the science center, etc. They are teaming up with the SF Science Center for Noon Year's Eve at 11am on 12/31/19. Kids and grown-ups are encouraged to come out in their pj's and bring a new pair of pj's size 18 months to 18 years to donate to Casey Cares (gift cards are also welcome such as Netflix, Redbox, Visa). The science center has their Hall of Heroes exhibition running and offers lots of programs to keep the kids engaged and learning during the holiday breaks.
