The Parable of the Prodigal Son tells the story of a Father, who is patient, compassionate, and welcomes our repentance with great rejoicing. It beckons us to turn away from all that does not truly satisfy and return to the welcoming grace and love of our Father God. This applies not only in our initial conversion, but also in our everyday life of faith in a broken and tempting world. Hear the invitation of the Father, "My son, my daughter, come back home and let's spend some time together."

The vision Jesus shared with his disciples when inviting them to follow him is found in Luke 9.23-24. "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it." In this vision, Jesus gives us a slogan and a symbol. The slogan is "come and die" and the symbol is the cross which was a method of torture, humiliation and execution by the Roman government. By telling his disciples to take up the crosses, Jesus defied the idea that death was the most terrifying thing, and suggested that there were worse things than death in the world, and that living in the fear of losing our lives could be one of them. If we give in to this fear, it would rob us of life and we would find ourselves always living stingily and cautiously which is not living at all. "If you're not afraid to lose your lives for my sake," Jesus says, "you might be surprised to find them." Jesus' way to have life and life to the fullest then is not to save it but to spend it, and to give it away!

How to make disciples?

Disciple or Disciple-making are terms used frequently in ministry. As Christians, we are encouraged to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. But one wonders what is a disciple? The word ‘disciple’ in the New Testament is translated from the Greek word mathetes. It refers to a learner or a student, someone who is apprenticed to a teacher to learn from him. But in the case of Jesus’ disciples, they were not just learning a certain body of knowledge but also a new way of life based upon a certain understanding of truths about reality.  Therefore, Christian discipleship stretches far beyond just having knowledge about Christ. Brothers and sisters, let’s be encouraged to be transformed into Christ likeliness and become disciples of Jesus Christ in the true sense by listening to the word of God through Pastor Alexa Ho.

What is a disciple?

This sermon marks the beginning of a new series “The Disciple-making Church”.  The focus of this series is to make a conscious effort to shift away from just erecting structures and focus more on growing people who can make more disciples of Christ. The aim is to strike a balance between the trellis-work and the vine work. God is reaching out to people with His word leading them to Salvation. But in order to be part of God’s plan, we need to abandon ourselves to the cause of the Gospel. There is a need to catch the vision of the New Testament that every Christian believer must be involved in vine growing work or making disciples (moving people to the right). Therefore, brothers and sisters, let’s understand the urgency of making disciple and discern our calling for being a disciple-making disciple of Jesus Christ by listening to God’s word through Ps Jeremy Lim.

Why make disciples?

When we read from Mathew 14: 22-31, we see a supernatural miracle taking place. Something that defies every law of science in the physical world. Jesus walks on water. We also find Peter, one of the twelve disciples, asking Jesus to allow him to walk on water as well. Jesus commands Peter to come out of the boat and walk on the water. Peter walks on water but as soon as Peter turns his eyes from Jesus and saw the depth of water, he started to doubt and he began to sink. Then Peter Cries out to Jesus, Save me! And immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand to save him. When we go through difficult life circumstances, we also wish for a miracle. But to receive such a miracle, we need to be willing to look to Jesus. We must be willing to step out of our boat when Jesus commands us too. Therefore, brothers and sisters, let’s take this opportunity to look to Jesus and listen to God’s word as preached by Ps Melissa Chan.     

New Year

When we read John 2:1-12, we find that Jesus is invited to attend a wedding feast in canna. Everything is going well until the host runs out of Wine to serve the guests. This is a crisis and Mary, mother of Jesus, came to ask Jesus for help. It is here that Jesus performed His first miracle; turning water into wine, saving the host and the wedding from a big social crisis. Likewise, when we put our trust in Him, he comes and saves us from our life crisis and makes us a new creation. Jesus gave a very interesting solution which defies human logic. He asks the servants to fill six water jars, used for ceremonial washing and cleaning, with water and draw from it and serve the master of the feast and the guests. Water from these jars is not considered fit or clean for drinking purposes. However, we see that Jesus turned something that is not even fit for drinking into something that is a high-end beverage. Similarly, when we put our trust in Jesus, He has the power to transform our lives as well. Therefore, brothers and sisters let’s commit our hearts and ears to the word of God preached by Ps Tan Yu Yong and be transformed by the word.

New Wine

When people think of Christmas these days, it's all about the holiday season, spending time with friends and family and exchanging presents. Recently, Apple compiled a list of famous Christmas hits and out of the total, only two talked about Christmas in its true essence. Have we forgotten the actual reason for celebrating Christmas? Christmas is about God showing His love and grace to the world through His son Jesus Christ in a very unique way. God, out of His love, sent His son to suffer and die on our behalf so that we can be saved. In Isaiah 53: 1-12, we learn about the prophecy of suffering Messiah who was promised by God to save the world, through His death. Christmas is about the celebration of this prophecy being fulfilled in Jesus Christ, God’s love to us. Therefore, brothers and sisters, let’s celebrate this Advent with the complete understanding of Christmas.
