089: Don't just make a podcast... Craft a show of significance!

Welcome to a conversation about podcast positivity with a somatic sex educator! Sex positive podcaster Karen Yates is in the midst of a pivot. Her show, Wild & Sublime, will still deliver its trademark sexy spin on infotainment, but as she heads back out into the real world to host her show live, onstage, she’s reevaluating the things she loves about podcasting and what she doesn’t. The podcast (created as a result of COVID lockdown) is an extension of those public performances. Whether focused on solo or poly play, kinky or vanilla variations, communication remains Wild & Sublime’s main thrust (sorry, not sorry: Karen’s world is pun-heavy).  Pleasure, as you might imagine, is another theme of Karen’s show. That’s where we steer this conversation - back to the pleasure of podcasting. Sure, we all craft shows with listeners in mind but, ultimately, our podcasts are for us. So, let me ask you:  What about this medium is pleasurable to you?  What podcast tasks do you enjoy doing?  What gets you in the state of flow versus what feels like a chore? After two full seasons of weekly scheduled episodes, Karen’s giving those questions more thorough review. 084: Stop Asian Hate, a podcast playlist

I recently had podcaster, conscious productivity coach, EFT practitioner, and founder of the PowerSisters Method, Pam Covarrubias on episode 125. And when I asker her how PowerSisters get matched, she brought up the idea of friction as a component to success and growth.  At first internally  I was like — EEK! No no no — when we build community we want to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who align with our values and I started to get that old school day anxiety of being partnered up for a project with someone I didn’t like or didn’t know… But then... It really got me thinking about how friction applies to podcasting. And so Pam inspired this WHOLE episode of Podcast Envy. On one hand, I think podcasting is an EXCELLENT tool for personal growth for the show host, the listeners, and even guests. On the other hand, we have a huge “silo” problem in podcasting. Podcast hosts bring guests on the show who think like them to talk about topics they agree on from similar points of view and then share that conversation with an audience of people who also nod their heads in agreement and take notes. 082: Be a person who is curious and cares with Kate Sullivan, To Dine For

Episode 081. “This podcast, in a way, has become my self-care. I didn’t even realize that I would be, but it absolutely has been the thing that makes me happiest... just for me. “ ~Cassandre Dunbar Here’s a podcast truth that may feel a bit uncomfortable: the personal has never been more political. Allow my paraphrasing of the popular concept to seep under your protective layers for a moment while I explain. Podcasters, content creators, cultural influencers: we all have a responsibility to speak and respond to what’s happening in the world around us. To show up for ourselves and our communities an authentic manner.  Especially now. Even if our podcasts have nothing to do with social justice or politics.  Why wouldn’t we want to create content that improves society and adds value to the lives of our listeners! Honestly? Because doing so might be risky. Doing so might require going against the forces that have shaped our POV (family, community, followers). Doing so might require confronting an old nemesis: impostor syndrome. Cassandre Dunbar of Be Well, Sis is tackling many of those personal and political taboos with her approach to the self-care podcast - a format that can politely be described as lacking in diversity. 081: How to create a safe space to exchange ideas with Cassandre Dunbar, Be Well, Sis

Episode 080. “The whole reason I love the solo episodes is because they're an opportunity to speak directly to your listener.“ ~Andrea Klunder On this episode, I'm answering a question which comes to us from a conversation that I was having with Kim Wensel from Pattern of Purpose Podcast. What do you think about solo episodes? Do I really have to do them?  And of course, no, you don't have to do anything technically, but what I said to her was that I am a HUGE FAN of solo episodes for podcasters, especially podcasters who are using their show to communicate their brand, to support their coaching or consulting business, to develop their own thought leadership and messaging, and to connect with potential clients and customers in their niche. Solo episodes are the best way to speak directly to your audience and make that intimate connection. Specifically, I encouraged Kim to KEEP doing solos in addition to her interviews. I love listening to Kim's solo episodes. They're insightful. I feel like I'm getting so much value for free from them and there are things I can directly apply into my own business practices. However... I changed my mind. 080: Hey Andrea... Do I have to do solo podcast episodes?

Episode 079. “I think that it really takes a lot of courage to be able to say, you know what? It doesn’t have to look like this; I don’t have to do it this way.“ ~Kelly Covert For many, ‘tis the season to feel less than despite all you’ve accomplished. The twelfth month generally triggers an inevitable flurry of to-do list exercises, goal-setting activities, and wholesale changes to every single habit you have -- just in time for the New Year.  Inner-voice coach, author, musician, and podcaster Kelly Covert has felt your pain. “I never felt good enough, even if I finished something or I accomplished something, I just, I never felt good enough.”  Kelly has since landed on the antidote. She quit goal-setting based on external expectations for her podcast, In Her Voice, and her life. Now, she’s purposeful about her intent, defining what success feels like to her as opposed to what it looks like to others. For podcasters tied to measuring show success by standard metrics alone, Kelly’s counsel might sound radical, even downright crazy. In essence, though, she’s reconnecting your final product to your creative process. 077: Treat your guests like the best (better than Gloria Steinem)

Bonus episode! “Podcasting in those early days felt like rediscovering my own identity." ~Andrea Klunder This is my favorite thing I’ve ever created for other podcasters. I had just closed my first business venture, a storefront yoga studio & spa in Chicago after a 5-year run. I was exhausted, bankrupt, and depressed. I wasn’t sure what to do but someone had planted the seed of podcasting and so little by little that seed started to germinate and eventually after a YEAR of research and digging through free (often outdated or misleading) online resources and learning how to record and edit… I hit submit in Apple Podcasts (then called iTunes) for my first show The Creative Impostor in 2015. And now, 5 years later, I have a growing, thriving business producing, editing, coaching, teaching and consulting on podcast strategy for other creative entrepreneurs, small business owners, and small to mid-size non-profit organizations. I’ve worked with people in sales, mental health and psychotherapy, education, distribution, opera, legal advocacy, holistic wellness, self-help, law, news & politics, recruiting, social justice, content marketing strategy, language, and more. On Podcast Envy, I’ve dug into the process of crafting a show that matters, and building community with more than 50 podcasters in different niches. Not to mention the thousands of hours of podcasts I’ve listened to, studying, analyzing, critiquing, and yes, sometimes (most times) even enjoying! I learn SO MUCH from talking with and listening to other people who make podcasts. And all this year, connecting with other podcasters about their strategies and perspectives and creative pivots has kept me motivated and hopeful for the future. Chances are if you have a business, or an organization, whether it’s your full-time pursuit or a side hustle, and you have a podcast (or want to have a podcast), I can come up with a dozen or more ways to make a show that works for you that you and your audience will love! Still, Debbie had to deliver if she wanted to capitalize on the unexpected press. “Every single day, I work, and that's the thing that you have to understand. I'm not necessarily better than you.
