Together they are fostering a cultural change with the widespread use of their logo, which unites us and symbolizes both “freedom from marijuana” and optimal brain and environmental health. The public has been deceived and misled regarding marijuana products and their effects, which has led to a public health crisis. Many groups are fighting back to stem the flow of damages from today’s high-potency marijuana and new delivery systems, which is difficult, costly, and time-consuming. Regardless, this long-term uphill endeavor is worth our sustained effort. We get stronger together. Just like if we face a bear in the woods, we stand side-by-side, get bigger, and get louder together to survive. Dr. Sharif Mohr https://www.dfaf.org/ Dr. Sharif Mohr is an epidemiologist with Drug Free America Foundation where he collects, analyzes, and interprets epidemiological data on substance abuse trends in order to inform program planning and policy at the local, state, and federal levels. Prior to joining Drug Free America Foundation, he worked on a variety of public health problems both domestically and abroad. Previous projects include HIV prevention among people who inject drugs (PWID) in SE Asia, serum vitamin D status and cancer risk in the US, and risk factors for urban leptospirosis in NE Brazil. Sharif is very passionate about substance abuse research and preventing drug use through science and policy-based solutions. He received his Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from the University of South Florida in 2000, his Master of Public Health in International Health from the University of Alabama, Birmingham in 2003, and his Ph.D. in Public Health Epidemiology from the University of California, San Diego in 2012. What is the culture of your Prevention Team? [#13]

Just last month I had to opportunity to speak with a military caregivers resource group from a multi-state hospital system out west. They invited me to share my personal story of struggling with substance misuse, post-traumatic stress, and an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury and how I stumbled into post-traumatic growth to get my life back on track. Although it was a little tough sharing such a personal story and being vulnerable, I enjoyed the rich discussion we had after about how we can build on our strengths as veterans, come together and support each other and change lives. For today’s episode, I’ve recorded my story of ups, downs, struggles, and wins. It is my hope that the challenges I experienced can be prevented or at least quickly and effectively addressed for the future generation of veterans. The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) program has been a central, bi-partisan component of our nation’s demand reduction strategy since its passage in 1998. The consistent and steady growth of the program from $10 million in 1998 to $100 million in 2019 and the number of grantees (from 92 original grantees to more than 2,000 grantees) is a testament to the program’s popularity. The premise of the DFC program is simple – that communities around the country must be organized and equipped to deal with their individual substance misuse problems in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.
