SQM and Escondida are formally accused of environmental damage and excessive water extraction in several Salt Flats such as Atacama, Punta Negra and Llamará. 

Is lithium the answer to zero emissions?

September 27 marks the anniversary of the first of the British atomic tests on the mainland that began at Maralinga in 1955.  On this show we look at the cultural, environmental and toxic legacy left by Britain's atomic bomb tests at Maralinga and across the country. First up we hear from Dr.Jim Green National Anti-nuclear campaginer with Friends of the Earth Australia who talks us through some details of the atomic tests and trails,  the numerous botched clean-ups that have left the lands of the Maralinga Tjarutja in particular heavily contaminated.  He explains the findings of a report released by the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University in May 'The nature of Pu‑bearing particles from the Maralinga nuclear testing site, Australia' that warns that degrading particles remaining from the tests are still releasing plutonium into the environment and further clean-ups are required.Aunty Sue Coleman-Haseldine Kokatha Mula Elder and President of the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance joins us from Ceduna, South Australia to talk about the ongoing impacts that the atomic testing has had on her country, health, family and culture.  She touches on some of the current threats posed by the Federal Government's proposed national nuclear waste dump at nearby Kimba and Southern Launch's rocket testing trails.

Maralinga Still Radioactive: Britain's radioactive legacy

In the lead up to International Peace Day on the 21st September we’ll be looking at the latest threat to peace and nuclear non-proliferation in the region with the Morrison-led conservative government's announcement on Thursday 16th September that a deal with the US to build nuclear powered submarines will be a central feature of the AUKUS pact that they have developed with the US and the UK.We speak with Margaret Reynolds the President of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom Australia who are calling for urgent public scrutiny into the deal. On today’s Radioactive Show we turn our focus to QLD where we speak with Miree LeRoy about some recent activities in the campaign to stop Adani’s Carmichael mine. Currently under construction on Wangan and Jagalingou country in the Galilee Basin, the mine will become Austalia’s largest coal mine if allowed to continue. Marisa interviewed Dr.Jim Green National Anti-nuclear Campaigner for Friends of the Earth about keeping the pressure on, to protect the Kimba from a nuclear waste dump.Marisa then Interviewed David Sweeney one of the co-founders of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and Campaigner for the Australian Conservation Foundation. The interview focused on the Government's response on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Treaty.

Ban school! All about the ban

On Today’s show we celebrate with Mirarr Traditional owners about the returning of their land after a four-decades long fight for traditional ownership at Jabiru, within the World-Heritage listed Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. In late June this year, Mirrar Traditional owners were granted freehold title over the town of Jabiru, under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act, the first of its kind in Australia. This fight for land rights, has been led by senior traditional owner Yvonne Margarula, and begun in 1978 when the town was built on what was then Crown land without the involvement or permission of Traditional Owners. The native title claim was lodged by Yvonne Margarula in 1998, which was finally decided by the Federal Court in 2016 after one of Australia’s longest-running native title matters.This week we hear from Corben Mudjandi, a Mirarr Traditional Owner and nephew of Yvonne, who tells us about the response of the community and the plans for Jabiru now that it’s been handed back. We also speak to Kirsten Blair from the Gundjehmi Aboriginal Coorporation about the history of the land rights struggle, the impacts of the Ranger Uranium mine, and what it means for the future of Jabiru. And, although this is a celebration, we also hear about the problems associated with the Ranger Uranium Mine rehabilitation plan from long-time anti-nuclear campaigner with the Australian Conservation Foundation, Dave Sweeney.

It’s Naidoc week, and the theme of ‘Heal Country’ resonates strongly through our radioactive Shows. For todays show I’ve looked back into our archives and found some powerful interview clips to share. We’ll hear from three incredible protectors of Country, Kokatha Mula woman Aunty Sue Coleman Haseldine, Tjiwarl woman, Vicki Abdullah and Arabunna man Uncle Kevin Buzzacott.The recordings of Aunty Sue and Aunty Vicki were both taken at the 2019 Camp for Country at Yeelerie, in Western Australia. The discussion with Uncle Kevin took place in July 2020. 

Naidoc week: Heal Country

In this episode, Anthony Amis, land use researcher at Friends of the Earth, takes us through the findings of the WA Auditor Report which found unacceptable levels of uranium in drinking water in several remote aboriginal communities. Anthony’s further research has found high levels of uranium in other parts of Australia as well, but a lack of data means the full scale of the problem is unknown. The lack of political will to treat the drinking water is yet another form of environmental racism.  To learn more about this research and check out the interactive map of contamination sites, read his snapshot here.
