About the Guests Patrick Torres is RLT’s Artistic Director and has more than a decade of experience as a professional director and theatre educator. His work as a freelance director has been seen at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Southwest Shakespeare Festival, Round House Theatre, The Source Festival, and the Hangar Theatre among others. In 2003, he was selected as a Drama League Directing Fellow and in 2005 was named a Young Leader of Color by the Theatre Communications Group. He has an MFA in Directing from the University of Southern Mississippi. Heather J. Strickland started as the Executive Director in June 2020. Prior to joining RLT, Heather was the Communications and Development Director for the North Carolina Partnership for Children (NCPC), the organization that leads the Smart Start network across the state. In this role, she has led a network-wide rebranding effort, and created and implemented fund development strategies for the organization. Prior to joining NCPC in 2013, Heather was the Director of Communications for the NC Department of State Treasurer where she oversaw all communications, branding and marketing strategies for the agency, including the North Carolina Retirement Systems, the State Health Plan, and the Local Government Commission. Heather also served as the Marketing Director for Carolina Ballet, one of the largest performing arts organizations in the state. Heather has over 15 years of extensive experience and success in developing organizational strategy and branding, fundraising, and cultivating engagement for nonprofit and public service organizations. She has been involved with RLT since 2005, starting as a volunteer and stepping into the roles of director, teaching artist, and board member over time. Heather has also worked as a director, actor, and dance/fight choreographer. She is a member of ArtEquity’s first cohort of National Board Leaders and has a degree in Theatre Arts and Communications from Flagler College. Ep. 108: The Struggles of Welcoming Audiences Back Inside our Community Theaters Post-COVID

At 9:26 a.m. on September 11th, 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration shut down U.S. airspace forcing 4,000 planes to land immediately. Thirty-eight of those planes containing 7,000 passengers landed in Gander, Newfoundland, a small town with a population (at the time) of about 9,000. The events that happened in Gander in the days following 9/11 inspired the musical COME FROM AWAY. The characters in that show are based on interviews with real people, including the character Kevin T. Kevin Tuerff was on the second plane to land in Gander on 9/11. He was traveling with his partner (also named Kevin) from Paris to the United States when their Air France flight was diverted to Newfoundland. Much of his video footage was used in the documentary "You Are Here." He wrote "Channel of Peace" in response to audience interest and desire to learn more about the kindness of people in Gander, Newfoundland.  About the Guest Kevin Tuerff is a social entrepreneur, author, and speaker with 25 years of experience in marketing communications. He has co-founded a college radio station, America Recycles Day, an international kindness initiative, and a certified B Corporation environmental marketing company. About the Guest Robert J. Sherman is a London-based songwriter, bookwriter and producer. Musicals include: Love Birds and Bumblescratch. A Spoonful of Sherman is a musical revue created by Robert J. Sherman, celebrating a century of Sherman family songwriting. A Spoonful of Sherman enjoyed its UK/Ireland tour in 2018 traveling to 25 cities across the British Isles. Born in Los Angeles in 1968 to Joyce and Robert B. Sherman, Robbie is the youngest of four siblings. Stemming from a long line of songwriters and composers, at 16, Robbie became one of the youngest songwriters ever invited to join BMI and is an alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. At 18 he wrote songs for the musical A Christmas Held Captive (Beverly Hills Playhouse). Subsequently, Robbie has written songs and/or scripts for various film, stage and TV productions. Projects include: The Adventures of Amazon Jack (Columbia Tristar), The Magic 7 (Pulse Entertainment), The Penguin Pirate and Inkas the Ramferinkas (an animated musical film). He oversaw and served as editor of Moose: Chapters From My Life, his father, Robert B. Sherman’s posthumously released autobiography. He also provided the voice and composed the music for the Moose audiobook. Robbie is the CEO/President of Music World LLC and MusicWorld UK. He is currently the Associate Artistic Producer of Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Mr. Maharaj’s playwrighting residencies include the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, New Orleans Writer’s Residency, Alliance Theater, Arkansas Repertory Theater, Crossroads Theater, Amas Musical Theater, Triskelion Arts, the 2020 Resident Playwright of the Letter of Marque Theatre, is a member of Theater Now’s 2021 Virtual Musical Theater Writer’s Group, a 2021 Season Finalist in The Downtown Urban Arts Festival in New York City, the inaugural playwright for the Theatre Raleigh New Works Reading Series, and a finalist for the 2021 Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. Ep. 99: Andre Jordan Talks Diana, Equity, Diversity, and So Much More

It was just a few weeks ago that I had the chance to walk into the Duke Energy Center for the first time in 14 months. I wasn’t there for a show, but I was there to chat with its Director Kerry Painter and take a tour. Just this month, the complex opened its doors to patrons with in-person symphony and pine cone music performances starting up again for the first time in just over a year. And while patrons returning to the venue will experience the same caliber of great performances they have come to expect from the building’s resident companies and guest artists, there have been some notable changes to all of the facilities that are just a sign of the times.  Even since Painter and I spoke, the governor has issued new guidelines, which not only removes the mask mandate but also allows facilities to open at 100-percent capacity. While the Duke Energy Center continues to strongly encourage the use of face masks, certain events may still require them along with a wellness screening upon entry. And some events may still operate at a reduced capacity to accommodate pod seating. In those cases, ticket purchasers will be notified in advance and that information will be notated on the Duke Energy Center website. Ep. 96: Sound Up with Tony Award-Winning Sound Designer Rob Kaplowitz

For many of us, it is difficult to comprehend the overwhelming enormity of the Holocaust and the 6-million Jews who were murdered by the Nazi regime during WWII. The historical trauma that impacted generations of displaced people and their families following the Holocaust, is the subject of the film WHERE CAN I GO? executive produced by Raleigh-Cary Jewish Family Services in partnership with The Justice Theater Project. The film is the culmination of a year-long program, Kesher, which utilized creative arts therapy to improve mental health and reduce the social isolation of five Holocaust survivors living in North Carolina and sheltered in place during the pandemic. Collectively, they teach us the importance of connecting, understanding, and remembering. About the Guests Tobi Dicker was born in a displaced person camp in Furth, Bavaria, Germany on May 3 1947, to two survivors of the Holocaust awaiting quota from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) to send them to Israel. Unfortunately, Tobi became ill and needed hospitalization which caused them to miss their quota. After 15 months of recovery and waiting they received new orders to go to the United States, where they arrived in May of 1950. Tobi grew up in New York and moved to North Carolina in 1994. North Carolina is Tobi’s home, her love. She always strives to remind people of the atrocities of the world. The Kesher program is a wonderful vehicle for which she feels a lot of gratitude. Tobi hopes by viewing this film you will keep in the forefront of your mind we can never be complacent or believe catastrophes can never happen again in the form of discrimination, anti-Semitism, and other forms of hatred. Marianna Miller was born in Presov, Czechoslovakia on August 8, 1925. She was brought to England at the start of the war  to keep her safe. Both her parents were killed by the end in Banksa Bystirica where there is now a memorial for those who were murdered. Marianna came to the United States in 1954 and had a successful career as a social worker working with families. Marianna moved to North Carolina a few years ago to be closer to her daughter. She enjoys the climate and beautiful landscape as well as the people and their new perspectives. She hopes by viewing this film people will understand her experience and connect it to how we treat refugees and children. She wants people to understand what can happen if we are less than decent to each other. Harry Rubinstein was born on December 19, 1930, in Cologne, Germany. His family was split up by Nazi immigration rules just before the war. In September 1939, with the help of a special U.S. visa, he gained passage to America with his family. After a successful career as Dean of Graduate School of the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, he moved with his wife to North Carolina and spend retirement closer to their children. Living in North Carolina has allowed them to be part of a vibrant Jewish community and participate in the lives of their children. Harry is a member of the JFS Kesher group and he wants people to see this film to understand the impact of national socialism and Nazism on European Jewish life. Judy Stevens was born in Gyöngyös, Hungary on June 22, 1946. Before her birth, her mother was in Auschwitz and her father in a labor command in Siberia. Most family members did not survive the war. In fear of another wave of anti-Semitic persecution during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, Judy and her parents escaped the country as refugees to Vienna, England, and then finally to Canada. Judy came to the United States in 1988 and moved to North Carolina in 2017. Living in North Carolina allows Judy to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She is an active member of her synagogue and within the Wake County Jewish community. Ep. 95: Where Can I Go? Candid Conversations with Survivors of the Holocaust

Back in December, Congress passed a $2.3 trillion spending bill that included more than $900 billion in pandemic relief. This was known as Save Our Stages and those monies were to be distributed by the Small Business Association. But no sooner did the SBA portal open on April 8, it shut down, leaving venues frustrated and confused, to say the least. The situation seems ever-changing and fluid and to help us make sense of where we go from here, I spoke to Arts North Carolina’s Executive Director Nate McGaha. About the Guest Nate McGaha has served as the Executive Director of Arts North Carolina, the statewide advocacy organization for the arts, since 2017 where he works for public funding and policy for the arts and arts education. He helped to create the Joint Caucus on Arts and Arts Education at the NC General Assembly, shepherded the NC Arts High School Graduation Requirement into law, and has led several statewide initiatives for relief, reopening, and recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to his work in advocacy, Nate was the Executive Director of Carolina Ballet in Raleigh for five years with Artistic Director Robert Weiss. Before coming to the Raleigh area he was the Director of Operations at Charlotte Ballet under the Artistic Direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride for seven years after serving as that company’s Resident Lighting Designer since 1996. Nate was also the Production Manager and Lighting Designer for the Chautauqua Ballet Company in the summer months from 1997 through 2009 and toured internationally with Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson’s Complexions Dance Company. He is a graduate of UNC School of the Arts where he received a BFA in Design and Production with a concentration in Lighting Design.
