As we dive into our “Thoughtful Money” series, I wanted this series to contain unconventional conversations that challenge our money mindset and uncover the reasoning behind how we think of money.    While many athletes, entertainers and celebrities are known for having access to a lot of money, it’s interesting how so many have fallen victim to bankruptcy and financial struggles. I believe that who we are with a dollar, is who we are with a million dollars. Unless we have the discipline and education to manage our money wisely, it can be very easy to revert back to toxic spending habits that serve temporary pleasures instead of strategically building a lifestyle that attracts and maintains wealth. Today’s guest is an athlete who excelled both on the gridiron and in the game of money.   Former NFL player, Takeo Spikes was drafted in the first round (13th pick overall) by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1998. After a successful 15 year career in football, he became a two-time All-Pro, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and is one of only seven linebackers in league history with more than 200 starts while playing for the Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers.   In preparation for life after football, Spikes began his broadcasting career with national appearances on television and radio and in December 2016, published his first book, Behind the Mask, a collection of intimate short stories about and photographs of some of the greatest linebackers to ever play in the NFL. His podcast of the same name, Behind the Mask, tells the REAL stories of some of your favorite players on and off the field, including Mike Singletary, Derrick Brooks, and the late Chuck Bednarik. I'm Not Going Back

Have you ever told yourself that something was impossible?    Too often we deem a task impossible before we even start. We look at the amount of work it takes, all of the responsibilities we already have and the lack of time in a day, and we completely rule it out before we even give ourselves an opportunity to put the work in.    When we say it’s impossible, we’re saying that we’re not determined enough to remove every other distraction out of our lives so that we can focus on achieving the tasks we have in this season. Our words have power, and when we allow ourselves to believe that something is impossible, we stay stuck in cycles of confusion and we trick ourselves by the stories we tell that lead us to feel overwhelmed.   In this season, I recognize that in order to increase my probability for success, I need to adjust my schedule and shift my priorities, which means removing the word “impossible” from my vocabulary. REWIND: Impossible Means It's Not Your Priority

Last year, my theme for 2020 was obedience. Instead of questioning and second guessing instructions that I knew were from God, I chose to move without question and obey any instructions regardless of fear, doubt, or sacrifices attached. Through obedience, I experienced supernatural favor and in spite of a global pandemic, I moved when God called me to shift, launch, and change the systems in my life.  As a doer, last year was perfect for me because I moved when I was called. But what happens when a DOER is called to be still? My theme for this year is contentment, which has been a struggle for me because it requires me to embrace stillness. Levels To Obedience

For the last 39 years, I have carried certain mindsets and attitudes that have gotten me to where I am today. However, as I cross over into my 40s, I am letting go of limiting beliefs that no longer serve me and chasing a purpose that only contributes to my peace, joy, or happiness.    My focus for this year is to be content. While my 20s were focused on pleasing people and gaining influence and my 30s consisted of rebuilding, I am now at a point in my life where I am  prepared to remove anything that stands in the way of contentment. Gerald Washington: Becoming a Purpose-Driven Couple

When most people initially think about pursuing purpose, they usually jump right into deciding the type of work they need to do in order to earn the amount of money they hope to make. As a finance expert for the last decade, I’ve received tons of inquiries regarding how to successfully turn your passion into profit, but none that desire clarity around purpose. I believe work and money should be the last things we focus on because purpose should be our priority. Over the last three weeks, we’ve learned the truth about wealth and applied lessons from the pillars of wealth to help us live purpose driven lives. We mastered our Fit pillar when we decided to mentally become the best version of ourselves and physically commit to our own individual process. We progressed in our People pillar by enrolling others in our vision and enforcing stronger boundaries in our personal relationships. We cleared our Space pillar when we removed something small in our space and added touches of beauty, and we grew in our Faith pillar when we learned how to operate in integrity and make time to actually practice the faith we profess. Before we step fully into redefining wealth, I believe it’s important that we review the six pillars of wealth. Around this time of year we hear many people sharing their New Year Resolutions and too often we make resolutions that we either don’t really want or we want, but don’t know how to actually achieve it in order to get results. I’m committed to helping you reach a sense of clarity and awareness of who you are, what you want, and who you need to become in the process, so that you take practical steps to reach your actual goals. The truth about wealth is when we don’t define it for ourselves, others will define it for us. In this community, we are on a mission to redefine wealth and we believe that wealth is more than money and material possessions. We believe in the 12th century definition of wealth, which is the condition of well-being or happiness and we use the six pillars of wealth as guiding points to help us take practical steps toward attaining the wealth we desire. The six pillars are: Fit: Becoming your best self People: Taking care of relationships that matter Space: Setting up your life to support you Faith: Believing in something greater Work: Living your life’s purpose Money: Attracting the prosperity you desire I invite you to join us on this journey and I challenge you to identify one thing you really want in each one of the pillars for 2021.
