Following a lifestyle you want to lead. Plain and simple. Obviously life doesn’t always go the way we want, but you don’t want to live your life wishing you were something or somebody else. You have to decide what you want to do, What’s important to you. Do you want to procrastinate less? Do you want to lose weight? You’ll never follow it if someone just told you. Once you've decided your goals thenHow do we stick to them1 step at a time-get used to being uncomfortable be okay with less progress we are a product of our environmentset a timeline (it’s okay if you don’t make it)accountability partner?are you driven more by risk or reward be smart with your resources build habits don’t beat yourself uphard/time consuming stuff firstReplace bad habits with new and focus on building new. Take one day at a time. Don’t overthink it. In this episode, we talk about motivation, specifically how emotional energy is used as a source of motivation, how this is good for us, what the negatives are and how we can benefit from it.For all updates check out: Humza K | LinktreeFor Those who have hearing difficulties, here is a shortened version of what I said:Introduction This Episode is about motivation and emotional energy.So this is a very contentious topic because people tend to have this belief that they want to be happy and motivated all the time. If this were possible we wouldn’t even have words like motivated or unproductive because we’d just be in that “normal” state all the time.So don’t set yourself up for unhappiness by striving for the unattainable.The problem is when these states persist for a very long time and we get into a rut and we’re unable to break through this.So What is emotional energy? (example of gym and motivations)Essentially it's hard to explain, other people may have big terms for this concept but this my way of expressing it, but when I talk about emotional energy what I'm talking about is motivation for doing something that is able to evoke very strong feelings within youSo I'll give you an example let's say that there were two people who were trying to start working out at the gym more regularly. One of these people, lets call them person 1, is working out to impress other people. That’s their motivation, right?Let's say another person, person 2, is trying to train and lose weight because maybe someone in their family requires a kidney transplant and they are a matching donor however they’re too overweight for the surgery.Which one of these people is more likely to wake up on Saturday and just not feel like training?Wait a minute if its so good why would I be making an episode on it? Here are the negatives….1. One of the most devastating effects is a negative feedback loop of failureI’ll explain what I mean by that we’re all human, we all make mistakes, we all fall off the wagon so to speak.. Here are some examples of what I mean, you may have heard of these before, but not quite realised the full extent of their meaning.“I always leave my work to the last minute, I’ll never be a good student”“I couldn’t go to the gym today, I guess I’ll never be fit so I’m just going to cry and eat all this junk food”What do these statements have in common? These are all people trying to change their habits, and they’re struggling. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with what these people are doing or the fact they’re struggling, but they are experiencing a lot of extra self-depreciation. Why? Now they feel like a complete failure and they can never change.2. The other problem with emotional energy and actually any kind of motivation, is you can’t rely on it forever.Here’s a question for you!How much motivation dos it require for you to have a shower?Do you feel like a failure if you don’t have one? Do you give up on hygiene altogetherHow is this relevant to many of us?Like everything in life it’s about balance. We can all draw from the positive aspects of motivation and using emotional energy to get us started on a path to bettering our lives. But if we hold onto it too long, it can be extremely draining.I’ll leave you with this quote that’s always stuck with me.“Motivation Gets you started but discipline is what keeps you going.” Jim Ryun. 

Motivation Will Fail Us- But Why is It Good and Bad?

In this episode we talk about what gratitude is and why our understanding of gratitude may need to change.For people with hearing difficulties I will put an abridged version of the script I use below:Gratitude:· Introduction (what is gratitude)· Layers to everything· What is the next layer of gratitude· When should we use gratitude Introduction:I think gratitude is being thankful for the circumstances that you find yourself in Everything Has Layers to It:Regardless of how you categorise information ( beginner, intermediate, advanced, conscious/unconscious competence) there are layers to everything. First Layer of GratitudeA lot of people make a view of gratitude that it's all about just making a list of things that you currently grateful for and things that other people don't have that you have-Shelter-food-friends/family etc Moving ForwardIt goes a little bit farther than that and we need to learn how to extend our [erce[tion of gratitudeWhat’s the next layer of gratitude?Think of something bad in your life or a lossIts hard to feel grateful using the first way of gratitude as now you don't have something anymoreBut you may have changed for the better, even in a subtle way.Losing anything no matter how small it may seem to others imparts the lessons to you that perhaps everything we do is limited One day we will have to go and everything we love can be taken away from us in a moments notice. Anything we have for a long time, we all take it for granted and losing someone, you do learn lessons That's another level to gratitude is to see how not having something has made you better. Everything we have is borrowed. In the same way that energy can never really be created or destroyed its only transferred, people come and go in our lives and we do spend time with them, we make warm memories with them that are really beautiful but no one can stay forever and nothing can stay permanently.Once you accept that, it does make you able to spend more time in the moment and accept things and enjoy life without forcing a mindset and I think that's the next layer of gratitude is being able to accept that not having things actually make your life better.To truly learn something, understand and apply it you have to really struggle and contend with the meaning.I think that is the next level to gratitude is being able to see those things and appreciate them and learning to appreciate how actually losing something can make you so much better rather than you know just looking at what you have and what others don't have and appreciating that. That's important too, but actually looking at what you don’t have and why you don't have it, what effect that’s had on you, and has that actually made you a better person and if not, how can you grow from this?When bad things happen it's hard to be grateful and life can be random, we won't understand the meaning behind things.We just can’t internalise the value of something until we’re certain we’re going to lose it.
