We are looking at trauma not necessarily at the tragic level, but defined as, “a lasting, negative, and limiting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event.” To this degree, nobody is immune. This is my series on anxiety. I had brought Britt Frank in as my expert and we talked through the message in her book, The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia to Find Your Path Forward. This is part three in the series where I bring in a peer to discuss the topic, and I have with me Vienna Pharaon. We all have trauma, pain, and disappointment that affects us. From massive, life threatening events to emotional scars to the loss of a dream. We tend to judge and minimize our pains, but a point of this episode is, if you have a pain, regardless, it just is. And you’ll never fully get over it. But it will either hamper you, or you can look at it as, “Well, that was a bummer, but how can I use it to help me?” Which is the point. Though we get on a soapbox about not justifying anything. We can find some redemption, but we aren’t going to sugarcoat that it makes up for it with a tidy little bow. My guest on this topic is Dr Lee Warren. Lee is a war veteran, author, podcaster, and active brain surgeon. He forever impacted how I view my personal faith, the first time I had him on the show for his book, I’ve Seen The End Of You, where Lee grapples with having faith in miracles while looking at someone’s brain scan and knowing the person will die. This time we’re talking about his new book, Hope Is The First Dose: A treatment plan for recovering from trauma, tragedy and other massive things. Lee is an expert here because on August 20, 2013, his nineteen-year-old son Mitch died of multiple stab wounds to the neck. Mitch’s best friend died along with him with one stab wound. Whether the knife used to kill Mitch was in his hand or someone else’s, whether he was at fault or a victim, they will never know. An unsolved murder. This could have been the end of Lee. Or, as you’ll hear, he has moved on. Not without scars. Not getting over it. But finding some redemption and he lays out how you can too.
