This week we speak with Hagyung Koo about her first feature documentary Black Summer. As Hagyung explains she joined up with Blazeaid to help out farmers affected by the 2019 fires. Hagyung was stationed at Bombala NSW but the film Black Summer concentrates on the people at Goongerah just across the border in Victoria. Black Summer is part of Melbourne Documentary Film Festival Online.

Protecting Australian content in the age of Netflix

We get to speak to a filmmaker responsible for the very elegantly made and gripping film Disclosure which is coming out on the Home Entertainment Platform.Disclosure is about a socially disturbing subject the fall out when a young child discloses sexual abuse at the hands of another child who is the offspring of family friends. An amazing film because of it's tight focus on the emotions of the unravelling adults who come to metaphorical blows as they strive to gain their social equalibrium with one family trying to skirt the actual issue of the assault and the other demanding an appropriate response to deal with the assault.

The Last Days of Loneliness is a locally produced film, avant garde in intention and profound in result. It is a collaboration between filmmaker Saidin Salkic and the incomparable John Flaus. We talk with Jake Ryan, actor, about his work and his role in new Australian film Streamline.Streamline is a coming of age film built around the pressures on a 15 year old boy favoured or cursed depending on your view with the potential for Olympic Gold in swimming. Written and directed by Tyson Wade Johnston, starring Levi Miller and co produced by Ian Thorpe the film had an online screening during MIFF and will have follow up regional screenings as part of the MIFF Travelling Showcase, and CinefestOZ Film Festival.There will be a theatrical release starting September 2 in all states not in hard lock down Tasmania, Queensland,   Territory, Western Australia and South Australia with NSW and Victoria able to catch it on Stan from September 16. And it is worth seeing.

One of the best aspects of documentary film is it's ability to look into issues, lives and experiences that we may know very little about. Wanting to Fly by Matthew Morden falls into this category. Wanting to Fly gives a much more incisive investigation of human suspension through the experiences of people involved and in particualar from the eyes of a man about to do his first suspension.

Australia has become home to a lot of oversea productions. At the moment La Brea, an LA centric series, is being shot in Melbourne. I had the opportuntiy to chat with one of the the actors Eoin Macken. He also was in last weeks featured film Till Death and is also releasing a Here are the Young Men, a Dublin based production that he wrote and directed. Both films are now available on Home Entertainment. I had a chance to ask Eoin about what it is like to work on such a diverse range of films and his life in Melbourne at the moment.

We join the hurrah around the Olympics in Japan with a mocumendarty series screening on the ABC called The Power of the The Dream. The brain child of Alexandra Keddie and Bobbie-Jean Henning the series follows “cousin-best-friends” Amy and Brooke Bland as they trial various Olympic sports to see which one will take them all the way to the podium. All six episodes of The Power of the Dream will launch on The Power of the Dream Instagram and Facebook pages on July 14.Now we go to a chat I had with Damon Smith versatile musican now filmmaker who has worked with Adam Coad and Regional Arts Victoria and Creative Victoria to bring the stage show Mental As Everything to the screen. It is all about removing myths around mental health as told by people who have lived experience. It is scheduled for the Melb Documentary Film Festival but with the covid lock down you will have to check the Nova Carlton website for updates about cinema times.

We look at Sarah Marcuson's short film A Holy Duty which explores the work of the volunteer organisation “Chevra Kadisha”, or “Sacred Society” which cares for the dead in the Jewish religion. We follow with a chat with Nick Barkla about his film The Healing which is the opening film at the upcoming Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. When you bring damaged, left over race horses and struggling ex-service people together magic happens. A fascinating film.
