This week, I’m so happy to bring you this conversation with Dr. Timothy Douglas of Lancaster University where we talk about his languages of German, Dutch Russian & Polish but also about his background as a researcher and how languages have played a role in his scientific career. Timothy talks to us about his journey through Slavic and Germanic languages and how a biomaterials conference that he attended in Poland was a turning point in realizing that languages could impact his field. He talks about appreciating the subtle differences in the Slavic languages and how he’s been able to keep from confusing them with one another. He tells us about the ways that languages can be used the in scientific community to build rapport and that there is value in learning a language even though it is often underrated as a soft skill. We talk about the trouble of collaborating in English as a native English speaker and the reasons why will most likely surprise you -- and we draw parallels between researching and language learning as well as knowing yourself as a researcher and as a language learner. Timothy gives us his opinion on how he thinks the scientific community can promote multilingualism. 75. Speaking German, Dutch, Russian & Polish

Hello Language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. This week, I’m so happy to bring you this conversation with Luz of Quechuata Rimay where we talked about Quechua language and culture. In this episode, Luz talks about the way Quechua language was perceived by peers in school in her native Peru. She talked about some of the discrimination that Quechua speakers face that drove some speakers to to hide their knowledge of the language. We talked about what is was like speaking Spanish coming from her town in the Andes to the capital of Lima and even the way that Quechua speakers mix the two languages. Luz talks to us about dialects of Quechua that can be found throughout the Andes and we find out how many speakers there are across Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador as well. One thing that I loved is talking about the culture among Quechua speakers and the principles and traditions that they uphold including three rules that come from the Inca Empire that are so very important to today. But I have to say, of all the things that Luz talks to us about my absolute favorite part of this episode is the song that Luz sings for us in Quechua. 74. Speaking Quechua

We talk about her travel experiences including her time studying abroad in China, South Africa and in Russia. She tells us about learning Arabic and specifically the Egyptian dialect of the language and what she enjoys about speaking and practicing Arabic. We talk about the concept of being a global citizen and how her languages have enabled her to make connections not just around the world but also in her diverse community here in the US. We also talk about the realities of traveling while black and turning racist encounters abroad into teachable moments and learning experiences.  Ernestine is currently running for mayor of her town and I hope you’ll all join me in wishing her luck in her campaign. 71. Speaking French & Polish

I am honored to have as a guest today Sunn M’Cheaux, who is Harvard University’s first and only Gullah language instructor, where he teaches a curriculum based on extensive research and his own personal Gullah/Geechee knowledge and experience. Sunn is a Gullah Geechee native originally from South Carolina. He is not only a Gullah instructor but also an activist and advocate whose work has been featured on HBO Vice, the BBC and Al Jazeera among others. Sunn has cultivated an online presence via social media with frequent viral content ranging from pop culture commentary, allegorical anecdotes, and entertainment, to serious discussions, advocacy, and philanthropy. He uses this content to promote intellect, ethics, enlightenment, and education— and considers media presence to be an integral component in his effort to draw attention to the oft-ignored social groups, particularly the Gullah/Geechee community. 70. Speaking Gullah Geechee with Sunn m'Cheaux

My guest today is Moenau and we’re having a conversation about the Tahitian language and the culture of French Polynesia. I learned a TON in this episode and I hope that you listeners will as well. Moenau talks to us about growing up in French Polynesia speaking French and learning the Tahitian language from her great-grandmother. She tells us not only about the Tahitian language but also about the 5 other languages that are native to French Polynesia. We talk about the differences within the country among these different languages and we learn about the grammatical structure of Tahitian and what makes it stand out among other languages in the South Pacific. 67. Speaking Catalan & Argentine Spanish

This week, I’m so excited to speak with Valentino about his language of Haitian Creole. He is a self-taught polyglot and speaks several languages in addition to his native Creole language. In this episode, Valentino tells us how both Creole and French are used in Haiti and where you would be likely to hear one over the other. We talk about things that make Creole unique and rather importantly why it’s NOT broken French. Valentino tells us about the phonological and grammatical nature of the language and how it has been influenced by languages from Africa. He tells us about the linguistic variations of Creole spoken in Port au Prince versus in other regions of the country and how the Creole spoken in the capital has influences from English, Spanish and French as well. We also talk about intelligibility between French derived Caribbean creoles and we learn about how unique Haitian culture is in the region from a historical standpoint. I absolutely love talking about every language but talking about English spoken in different parts of the world is always so much fun for me because I also love to learn about how my own native language is expressed in different parts of the world! So I knew that when I was ready to talk about Aussie English, I had to come to my favorite Australian language podcasters for a chat! In this episode we talk about how second languages taught in Victoria tend to be Asian languages like Mandarin and Japanese. We talk about how multilingualism is expressed among multicultural communities throughout the country and how the prevalence of these communities can inform the second language offerings in schools. When it comes to English, we talk about the informal nature of Australian culture and language, accents around Australia and how immigration has created a mix of heritage language and English. We also discuss indigineous Australians and the efforts that are taken and can be taken regarding acknowledging the heritage of first peoples. And of course we have dispel some popular stereotypes like.. Do Australians even put shrimps on a barbie? Where did that even come from? 63. Speaking Australian English

Hello Language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Tamara, the founder of Spanish con Salsa and the host of the Learn Spanish con Salsa podcast and this week, we’re discussing her language of Caribbean Spanish. If you’re listening to this show then you surely know that Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world with over 500 million speakers. Spanish also has many regional dialects, the Caribbean dialect being one of them. Beyond Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, this region also includes the Caribbean coasts of Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Panama and others. In this episode, Tamara tells us how she first came to the Spanish language through fitness and music and then furthered her abilities in Spanish through traveling to places in the Caribbean region. We talk about music and lyrics in salsa and bachata songs and we take a quick detour into talking about some of her favorite musicians in these genres.  Tamara talks to us about how she was able to learn the language on her own largely without needing to rely on structured courses and classes - which in my opinion is incredibly admirable. We talk about indigenous & African words and language usage in the Spanish speaking Caribbean, accents throughout the region including how the pronunciation differs from country to country and we discuss the importance of understanding Caribbean culture beyond the resorts, the sun, sand and sea. 62. Speaking Caribbean Spanish

Hello Language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Ikhlas, a teacher and journalist who has come to join me to discuss her native Arabic dialect and the German language. In this episode, we’re talking about learning languages in Palestine and hearing different languages throughout multi lingual Jerusalem. We talk about Arabic words spoken throughout the Levantine dialect and how vowel usage in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine can change the same word throughout this region. Ikhlas tells us about Palestinian dialects from the big city to the countryside and she shares the unusual way she came to learning the Polish language in school in Jerusalem. And finally we talk about life in Germany, the German language and how she found herself one day becoming a teacher of Arabic in Germany.
