Tonight's podcast resumes this series of podcasts after a rather long hiatus. I share a poem by e.e. cummings from a collection by Caroline Kennedy on her mother's favorite poems. I then discuss PetSmart (PETM), a stock that I do not currently have a position, yet a company that I have owned in the past and continue to admire for its financial results and for, I should add, my cat Rahmmy, who was Mickey when I adopted him at my local PetSmart in association with the Coulee Region Humane Society. But that is another subject entirely :). I spend a little time commenting on the current difficult environment we face in America and the world. And that is without even mentioning or discussing the horrible Deep Water Horizon spill in the Gulf Of Mexico which may well be the subject of another rant another evening! Meridian Bioscience (VIVO) is a favorite blog subject of mine.  I discuss VIVO and also read a poem by Robert Frost, "Directive". This stock is a favorite of mine producing disease test kits and has a record of steady revenue, earnings, and free cash flow growth.  They pay a solid and growing dividend and have a strong financial balance sheet.

I read a poem by Marge Piercy, "To be of use", and then discuss a column today (10/5/09) from the NYDaily News.com by Peter Siris: "Dangerous info: Stock picks". While agreeing that the internet is full of schemes and talking-up stocks, I point out that my blog is about information, investment philosophy, and that I share my own holdings with you through the blog and Covestor. I have indeed recently become involved with Covestor Investment Management (http://cv.im) but I continue with the same straight forward and documented discussions that have marked this blog since starting in 2003. Exercise caution whenever listening to anyone on the web, but not all is useless.

Responding to a Column by Peter Siris in NYDaily News: Stock Picks?

Tonight's podcast is about an old favorite of mine ResMed (RMD), the company that sells CPAP machines/masks for sleep apnea, and I read another poem, "Departmental", by Robert Frost, a favorite poet of mine. ResMed recently reported earnings which beat expectations, they have a 5-Yr Restated record on Morningstar which is impressive, reasonable valuation, and a nice chart 'to boot'!

On tonight's podcast, I share a poem with you by Robert Frost as we all seek to hang on to stars and ideals in these stressful times. I then talk about Sysco (SYY) which closed today at $22.82 (down $(1.12) on the day)(6/15/09). I touch on the latest earnings report, the Morningstar.com '5 Yr Restated' Financials, Yahoo "Key Statistics" and a 'point & figure' chart from StockCharts.com. This is more of a GARP investment, with a 4% yield!

For the second podcast this Memorial Day 2009 Weekend, I share with you the Bio of Stephen Crane and read one of his poems, "Do Not Weep, Maiden, For War Is Kind", and a short essay, "The Colonel", by Carolyn Forche. PetSmart (PETM) recently dropped sharply on what appeared to me to be good news. Owning this stock already in my trading portfolio, instead of joining the selling mob, I chose to add to my position in light of my own assessment that the news was far better than suggested by a Goldman Sachs analyst who dropped the rating on the stock while maintaining the price target. I explain my rationale and wait for trading to resume next week.

I credit Robert Lichello who wrote "How to Make $1,000,000 Automatically" and his AIM system, and point out how I have been managing my own portfolio in the face of this terrible bear market.

In tonight's podcast, I read a poem, "Filling Station" by Elizabeth Bishop, discuss WMS Industries (WMS), a stock that I hold in my trading portfolio, and talk about how a bear market has affected my own portfolio management strategy. How I now allow initial purchases in my 5 position minimum to incur a 16% loss before selling, and how I replace those minimum holdings with smaller positions and now replace new positions in the 6 to 20 position portion of my portfolio at larger size based on the other positions.

In addition, I discuss my approach of responding to market conditions by automatically shifting into and out of equities. I also comment on the controversy I generated by buying shares of Visa (V) and then selling them just two weeks later at an 8% loss.
