On this week’s Sports Show, you had your say on the resumption of the football season which sees the Premier League restart next Wednesday & the Championship restart next Saturday. Even some callers who felt back in April that the season should have been voided said they were really looking forward to watching some live action. Dan came on, Coach of Trefelin Under 9s, to tell us about some of the amazing fundraising his squad have been doing in support of NHS workers in the Port Talbot area. Nigel voiced his dismay about the lack of support given to lower league clubs from the Premier League, and there’s more, all on the podcast.

'The football season set to return’

Former Neath, Ospreys, Wales & British & Irish Lions legend James Hook joined us on Friday’s Sports Show alongside sports author Dave Brayley. Dave has written books with the likes of Tony Cottee and Ashley Williams & has now teamed up with James. We found out the series is called Chasing the Rugby Dream with the first book called Kick Off, all about a 10 year old boy who’s fanatical about rugby and wants to play the game. We heard how the idea for the book came about how the characters were developed and what’s next in the series. James also gave us an idea how lockdown has been treating him, how he’s been coping with home schooling his kids and he looked back on his career & divulged some secrets to us, who the best singer in the Welsh squad was when he played; Who was regarded as the biggest joker & what life was like in France when he played for Perpignan

This week on the Sports Show it was all about mental health to coincide with mental health awareness week; Owen Hathway from Sport Wales came on to tell us of their latest mental health initiatives. Ryan Bath was on telling us of the rugby team he’s helped set up called Tough Talk RFC, its members all having experiences of mental health issues to share. Paul Tabram is familiar to Ospreys supporters as he’s the man on the mic at the Liberty home games. He’s embarked on a charity walk for Swansea Mind doing 5k a day for 26 days. His final day is Tuesday 26th. David Cotterill, former Welsh international footballer told us about his foundation & the online courses he’s running. Lee Trundle was on explaining how his role has evolved as an ambassador at the Swans & how important sport is in keeping both the body and mind active. And we spoke to Monika Bugelli, Director at Swansea Samaritans.

Sport and Mental Health

Avid Ospreys fan Graham was excited to see what was ahead for his team however caller Jim was feeling cautious. Ospreys Takeover & Winning against Lockdown

On this week's show we focussed on the relationship between sport and gambling looking how it can affect all of us. Nick Phillips told us all about his story, how he thinks he’s gambled away £250,000 over the past 20 years & how he attempted to take his life. Ian from Gamblers Anonymous came on and told us how much gambling has increased over the past decade. James told us about the charity project he works with called The Big Step Project and how the Swans have got involved, while Charles told us about Gambling with Lives, a charity he helped set up after his own son took his life back in 2017. We tried answering another question on Friday’s Sports Show - Who do you consider to be the greatest Welsh Fly Half? When you consider the options...Cliff Morgan, Barry John, Phil Bennett, Jonathan Davies the answer could be debated for weeks and months...Gareth opted for Barry John, just. But he said you could easily choose a fly half from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s such has been the production line. Colin from Birchgrove RFC was adamant - Phil Bennett for his movement off both feet. Damian opted for Jonathan Davies simply because of his adaptability and being top of his game in both rugby union and league.. All that & more on this week's podcast!

The Great Welsh Fly Half Debate

We asked a question on Friday’s Sports Show; Knowing what we know now compared to several weeks ago should the football season be scrapped & declared null & void, or should it be completed, even behind closed doors? Opinion was really split on this. Terry was adamant that the season should be scrapped while Paul felt it had to be completed & that the more wealthy clubs could go some way towards helping lower league clubs stay in business. On Friday’s Sports Show, again on Zoom, we spoke to some local heroes who are trying to make the best of the current situation. Angelo Dragone is a former boxer turned boxing trainer who runs the Stallion boxing academy. He’s also running classes online. Dale Lambrick is raising funds for the NHS by taking part in a 12 hour 3 day cycle marathon that’s been organised by cycling legend Geraint Thomas. Adam Williams runs Ramps Skatepark & is in to extreme sports. He’s been training people online (carefully) about skateboarding and other extreme sports & has built a skate park in his back garden. Mike Jones is personal trainer with Boss It training. He offered some great tips for us to stay active. Phil Williams, Assistant coach at Goytre football club and Karl Lewis coach at Llantwit Major football club told us about an online challenge they’ve organised. Coronavirus continues: More heroes doing their bit

Friday’s Sports Show was aptly renamed the Sports Zoom In as opposed to phone in...and pretty well it worked too! We spoke to former Wales Captain Ryan Jones about his fundraising challenges for the NHS. Last Saturday he ran a marathon in his back garden, Easter Saturday it’s a bike challenge. Details are on our website. Sport Wales have launched an Emergency Relief fund for sports clubs across Wales struggling through this crisis. Owen Hathway told us more.
