In this episode, our guest is Melissa Murer Corrigan was founding Executive Director and CEO of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) in Washington, D.C. from 1994-2011. She also is an innovator in credentialing and pharmacy workforce initiatives. Melissa’s leadership launched the PTCB program that has now certified over 700,000 pharmacy technicians working across the United States in large chains such as Walgreens and CVS, health systems and community pharmacies. PTCB certified technicians serve millions of patients annually. Murer Corrigan embraced ambition, took risks, and was the only women on the PTCB Board of Governors during her 17-year tenure as CEO. In 2012 Melissa joined educational assessment leader ACT in Iowa City as an executive leader for the Workforce Development Division and then progressed to serve as Vice President of Social Impact for ACT’s Center for Equity in Learning. Her current chapter includes leading the healthcare and credentialing consultancy Manville Heights LLC. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Institute for the History of Pharmacy and is the host of the MelisRxScripts podcast. Melissa has served as adjunct faculty with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy since 2013. In 2015, she was named a Fellow of the American Society of Health- System Pharmacists and in 2016 Melissa was named a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association. Also in 2016, she received the Honorary Alumni Award from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. She had the honor of being the commencement speaker for the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 2013 and Drake University in 2014. Passionate about both leadership and encouraging women leaders, Melissa provided the vision for the inaugural Zada Cooper Leadership Symposium. This now annual event features women in pharmacy leadership roles and celebrates the legacy of Locally in Eastern Iowa, Melissa has been recognized as a Woman of Influence and has served on the Board of Directors for Corridor Women Connect. Melissa is a graduate of Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She received the 2010 Weaver Medal which is Drake University College of Pharmacy’s highest honor. Melissa is a past president of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and received the association’s distinguished Certification Industry Leadership Award in 2008. She has served as President of the Board of Directors for the Council on Credentialing in Pharmacy. Women in Pharmacy - Bringing Others Up Around You with Melissa Corrigan

In this episode, our guest is Dr. Leigh Ann Ross who is the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. She previously served as the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and currently serves as Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Research Professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UM. Dr. Ross also works with the John D. Bower School of Population Health at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as a Professor in the Department of Population Health Science. Dr. Ross received a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Doctor of Pharmacy from Ole Miss. She completed a Primary Care Pharmacy Residency at UMMC. Since joining the faculty in 2009, Dr. Ross has led practice initiatives to implement medication management services at the Medical Center and in communities through UM’s Community-Based Research Program. In addition to her work in pharmacy, Dr. Ross completed a 2-year Congressional Fellowship in the Office of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran where she served as policy advisor on health care and also worked on labor, housing, and economic development. Dr. Ross is a graduate of Leadership Mississippi and has been actively involved in professional organizations at a state and national level. She is a Past President of the Mississippi Pharmacists Association and current President- Elect of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. Ross is passionate about leadership development and advocacy within our profession. Key points: Service - I love professional service and I feel it is important to encourage our students and early career pharmacists to be involved in professional organizations. I have worked with most all professional organizations over the last 20 years, but my current focus is as President-Elect of ACCP and member of their Board of Regents. Leadership - I am passionate about leadership development. I appreciate the mentorship provided to me in this area and have tried to incorporate this into our curriculum for both students and residents. Advocacy - I feel advocacy to move pharmacy forward is very important. I have enjoyed building on my experience as a Health Policy Fellow and working with others to better understand legislative processes and how to advocate for our profession. Practice Advancement / Community-Based Research - I had the opportunity early in my career to lead the Pharmaceutical Care Clinics at UMMC, comprised of pharmacist-run clinics and interprofessional clinics and later to work with colleagues to implement a Community-Based Research Program to implement medication management services (like those in the Pharmaceutical Care Clinics) in community pharmacy and clinic settings. Through the Community-Based Research Program, we have established a number of partnerships, such as the Mississippi State Department of Health. Research - Most recently, I worked with colleagues to establish a Center for Clinical and Translational Science in our Research Institute. This Center is structured to facilitate research across the translational spectrum from basic research to clinical trials to communities. Our community research is now housed in this Center. In this 4 part series Women Leading in a Crisis, we connected with another CPO of a large health system, LeeAnn Miller. She is the Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer for System Pharmacy Services at Yale-New Haven Health (YNHH). LeeAnn is responsible for advancing pharmacy services to drive high-value care for patients and the community. Yale New Haven Health is comprised of 5 Delivery Networks spanning the Connecticut shoreline and Rhode Island. LeeAnn oversees approximately 950 FTEs spanning acute care and ambulatory services inclusive of retail and specialty pharmacy. LeeAnn completed her undergraduate training at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy where she also earned a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Policy. She later completed a post-graduate doctor of pharmacy degree at Shenandoah University in Virginia. During the Covid-19 crisis, we’ve heard anecdotally about women leaders doing a better job and new research backs that up. One study found that outcomes related to Covid-19, including number of cases and deaths, were systematically better in countries led by women. Another looked at governors in the U.S. and similarly found that states with female leaders had lower fatality rates. Pharmacy has and will play maybe even a bigger role in 2021 as we roll out the COVID vaccine, and each of these ladies has been interviewed by media about the #vaccine and represented the pharmacy profession well!

Women Leading in a Crisis - Part 1 with Dr. Helen McKnight

In this episode, our guest is Marialice Bennett, a former APhA Past President and the 2021 APhA Remington Medal recipient. Marialice is a Professor Emerita of Pharmacy Practice and Science and former Residency Director for The Ambulatory and Community Care Residency Programs at the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. She served as a co-founder and pharmacy director of University Health Connection, an innovative interprofessional health care clinic for faculty and staff of the university, from 1999 to 2011. She currently works with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and with the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) to advance community-based pharmacy practice and community-based residency programs. She earned her BS degree from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 1969. Professor Bennett is recognized as a practice innovator and an agent of change. She was among the first clinical pharmacists to practice at the OSU Medical Center. Her practice team’s contribution to the development of both the OSU College of Pharmacy Clinical Partners and the OSU University Health Connection resulted in 2005 and 2006 ASHP Best Practice Awards. She received the 1999 APhA Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award for her contributes to practice, the 2011 OPA Beal Award for lifetime contributions to pharmacy, 2015 OSU College of Pharmacy Lifetime Achievement Award, and the 2016 Bowl of Hygeia Award for service to the community. She has been involved with several national practice-based research projects including Project Impact: Hyperlipidemia and Patient Self-Management: Diabetes. She has contributed to numerous projects and tools developed to implement medication therapy management (MTM) nationally as well as frequently speaking and publishing on practice innovation. She received the 2004 APhA Foundation, Jake Miller Award for her contributions to practice-based research. Professor Bennett loves to teach and to mentor. She strives to bring innovation and inspiration to all learners. Over the past 30 years she has contributed to the advancement of community residencies nationally and leaves a legacy of cutting edge PGY1 and PGY2 programs at OSU. She feels blessed to have mentored 108 residents and numerous students during her career. She is honored to be the recipient of several OSU teaching awards, the 2004 APhA Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting Award, 2009 APhA Gloria Niemeyer Franck Leadership Mentoring Award, the 2013 Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA-ASP Award, and the 2016 OSU Alumni Society Josephine Sitterle Failer Award for volunteer service to students. He grew up in NC and went to pharmacy school at UNC. He’s addicted to the ocean, and during my time there he spent one month each over two summers in Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras, as an intern at a dive shop, where he filled tanks, loaded the boats, and led dive and snorkel tours. Alex paid for the trips there by teaching marine biology for Duke TIP at their Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC, once I got back. After graduating, Alex spent a year in South Carolina before moving to Hawaii, where he lived for five years, both on the Big Island and Maui.
