Texans on Team USA, JOs Needs Shieldy, Olympics are Near

More teams from Texas than ever competed at the Southwest Zone Junior Olympics Qualifying tournament a couple weekends ago, and all of them having qualified, they will now be playing at National Junior Olympics in North Texas at the end of July. James and Joe talk about this huge bit of success for Texas clubs and the forthcoming big tournament. Those Olympics overlap with the other, bigger Olympics, the ones in Tokyo, where the USA Women's Team will attempt to win a third straight gold medal (they will), and the new-look, European-honed men will try to shock the global community by winning one of their own. Plus, Joe reluctantly indulges James' concerns about the recent, and correct, decision by the Supreme Court to dismantle some of the cartel-like characteristics of the NCAA. James says it could change the landscape of non-revenue sports at colleges and universities. Junior Olympics, Senior Olympics, and NCAA Takes a Hit

In between minor bouts of tornado warnings, power outages, and torrential Texas rain the Olympic Development Program season essentially ended in San Antonio last weekend with over 500 athletes from as far as Florida and Hawai'i playing dozens of matches over three days. We recap those events and talk with USA Water Polo High Performance Director John Abdou about professionalizing the sport, more movement toward bigger events in Texas, and next season. Which won't include James, who's stepping down as head coach of the Southwest Zone ODP team but will likely be hovering around the program next season. (Joe is not so subtly suggesting it's a bad idea). He and Joe joust over people not wearing masks in San Antonio with Joe saying he doesn't understand why and James arguing that, in fact, he does. We talk with a soaked Trent Calder, first-year head coach of the Lions, about his comeback win. And the summer schedule doesn't resemble anything like what we saw in 2020 for understandable reasons. We talk about the packed schedule, including JOs in North Texas and ODP Regional Championships a week from now. Austin College's women earn a top-25 ranking as the NCAA season closes out with a big title win for USC. And we're cutting back.
