Here’s the thing, though: to some degree, failure is an inevitable part of life. Whether they’re big or small, none of us can avoid experiencing setbacks from time to time and that’s OK. In fact, it’s more than just OK to fail it’s necessary. Cognitive distortions are biased perspectives we take on ourselves and the world around us. They are irrational thoughts and beliefs that we unknowingly reinforce over time. These patterns and systems of thought are often subtle–it’s difficult to recognize them when they are a regular feature of your day-to-day thoughts. That is why they can be so damaging since it’s hard to change what you don’t recognize as something that needs to change! Lately, I have been feeling burnt out dealing with work and life but recently I had a meeting with myself and realized that I have become Complacent. This is a dangerous virus that we all struggle with within our day-to-day life. Do you drive and text, how about working on several tasks at the same time? When is the last time you give a task 100% of your focus and attention? Multitasking reduces your efficiency and performance because your brain can only focus on one thing at a time. When we try to do two things at once, our brain lacks the capacity to perform both tasks successfully. Research also shows that, in addition to slowing us down, multitasking lowers our IQ. On this weekly episode, we reflect on how we are ‘always-on’  and how our daily lives are always moving, there is a constant demand to be always busy and to be seen to be busy, and responding to everything immediately, and getting tasks done straight away. It can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed. There is a massive difference between being busy and productive. While the power of Starbucks and energy drinks help us feel like we have an endless amount of energy. We are not designed to always be busy. Our weight fluctuates day-to-day, and daily weighing can lead to discouragement, stress and, quitting of diet and fitness regiment. When we see a higher number on the scale than we saw the day before. Weighing ourselves once a month is a great way to ensure we are staying on track while becoming lost within our fitness journey. Decades of history have shown, though, that although we consider ourselves to be highly rational decision-makers. We are pretty irrational in our decision-making.  We aren’t so good at figuring out what we want.  Our preferences aren’t very stable or coherent.  We’re bad at assessing risks and rewards. On this weekly episode, Progress Theory is the idea that people are motivated by taking steps forward on a consistent basis even if those steps are relatively small in the big picture. This is very true in my time in the US Army during the days of Basic Training, it made me reflect on my children and how I could ask them to clean up but after picking up one thing they would want me to look. After a few words of affirmation, they would happily go back to cleaning. If we have always done things a certain way, it can be difficult to identify a better way to get things done. An outsider's perspective can breathe fresh life and insight into our thinking.  In fact, it often takes someone with a different point of view to recognize opportunities for change and strategic advantage. Their perspective can help us to draw different meanings and conclusions from the same set of facts. Lastly, Backward Planning is a process that educators use to design learning experiences and instructional techniques to achieve specific learning goals. One of the biggest factors that determine whether we are successful is effective time management. Without great time management, failure is common. Backward planning lets us know when we need to get started, and also gives timing points along the way to let us know if we need to adjust our plan in order to things done when. The illusion of control is a cognitive bias that leads us to assume that we have complete control over the outcome of a situation in an instance where we do not. Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun coined the term “posttraumatic growth” to capture this phenomenon, defining it as the positive psychological change that is experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances. Make no doubt: trauma shakes up our world and forces us to evaluate our cherished goals and dreams. Many of our relationships start off in heaven and gradually come back to earth. That is common but not inevitable. Achieving and maintaining positive and joyous human relationships is more difficult than attaining high professional eminence, but it is still possible. The capacity for living is the capacity to make human contacts pleasurable. If we desire a harmonious relationship there must be a long-lasting enjoyment of being in contact with another person. A comfortable, convenient life is not a real life - the more comfortable, the less alive. The most comfortable life is in the grave, Rajneesh. Your comfort zone is a dangerous place. It prevents you from improving, it stops you from achieving all the things you are capable of achieving and it makes you miserable.
