Mental Health & the Pandemic - High Risk Groups

Will Portland or all of Oregon be ordered to “Shelter in Place”?With the news that California and Washington have ordered to Shelter in Place on Friday, millions of people have been ordered to stay at home. As of today the Governor of Oregon, Kate Brown has stated that she won’t make the move for the State however, the Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler has not ruled out the measure to protect their residents from the spread of Coronavirus and to help flatten the curve of new cases. So what does that mean, what does it look like, how long will it last? These and other questions answered today on the Visit Portland Podcast. In this episode we answer some common questions about a stay-at-home order and dispel some myths and over-reactions based on commonly shared memes and Facebook posts that have been shared by many.  These questions include:Does a shelter-in-place order mean I legally can’t leave my house?What is an essential business?How does the order define social distancing?Can I get arrested if I don’t comply with the order?Is the National Guard being activated to enforce Shelter in Place?How long does a shelter-in-place order last?Testing in Oregon for NOVID-19 is several days if not weeks behind other states with large numbers of people diagnosed with the disease. Self-Isolation and Social Distancing during the CoronaVirus Pandemic - Activities that you can do at Home.

Friday’s are usually an event guide for the weekend here on the Visit Portland Podcast.  Concerts, Games, Festivals and Off-Broadway shows.  But given the uncertainty of the growing Coronavirus transmission in the Portland area and all of Oregon, the Governor, the County Chair and the Mayor of Portland have called for Social Distancing and cancellation of all large events. So I’m publishing this episode on Thursday this week as the content is time-sensitive and subject to change rapidly.This episode was difficult for me.  At times, as I monitored Twitter for breaking updates, and responded to the community input on a post in the DamnPortlanders Facebook group, I had tears.  I know the people who will be hit hardest by the economic impact of this pandemic.  I see their faces as I write.  I think of their names as I research. I am one of those people.  I’m a gig-worker, a freelancer, and these people are my tribe.  I relate to them. I, like nearly all of them are scrambling today wondering where the first-of-the month bill money is going to come from.  I’ll be applying for temporary Part-Time jobs as soon as I finish this episode.
