After the marriage of Satyavati and Shantanu, Satyavati bore two sons: Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. The Harivamsa tells of Bhishma recalling events after Shantanu’s death. During the period of mourning after Shantanu’s death, Ugrayudha Paurava (usurper of the throne of Panchala) demanded that Bhishma hand over Satyavati in return for wealth. Bhishma killed Ugrayudha Paurava, who had lost his powers because he lusted after another’s wife. However, the Mahabharata does not include this event; it only describes Bhishma crowning Chitrangada as king under Satyavati’s command. Chitrangada was later killed by a namesake gandharva (a celestial musician). After Chitrangada’s death his young brother Vichitravirya was crowned king, while Bhishma ruled on his behalf (under Satyavati’s command) until Vichitravirya grew up. Vichitravirya married the princesses of Kashi-Kosala: Ambika and Ambalika, who were won by Bhishma in a Swayamvara (marriage choice). The childless Vichitravirya met with an untimely death from tuberculosis. With no heir to the throne, Satyavati asked Bhishma to marry the widows of Vichitravirya (following the practice of niyoga in its narrower sense, as a levirate marriage) and rule as king. Bhishma refused, reminding Satyavati of the promise he made to her father and his vow of bachelorhood. He suggests that a Brahmin could be hired to father children on the widows, thus preserving the dynasty. Revealing to Bhishma the tale of her encounter with Parashara, Satyavati well knew that this was the time to call her son Vyasa to aid her. Satyavati coaxed Vyasa to have niyoga with his brother’s widows, saying: “from affection for thy brother Vichitravirya, for the perpetuation of our dynasty, for the sake of this Bhishma’s request and my command, for kindness to all creatures, for the protection of the people and from the liberality of thy heart, O sinless one, it behooveth thee to do what I say.” After convincing Vyasa, Satyavati managed (with great difficulty) to obtain the consent of her “virtuous” daughters-in-law. In the Mahabharata, Vyasa agreed immediately to the niyoga. In the Devi Bhagavata Purana version, Vyasa initially refused Satyavati’s proposal. He argued that Vichitravirya’s wives were like his daughters; having niyoga with them was a heinous sin, through which no good could come. As a master of “realpolitik”, the hungry-for-grandsons Satyavati asserted that to preserve the dynasty, wrong directives by elders should be followed if they are going to reduce the sorrow of a mother. Vyasa finally agreed to that “disgusting task”, but suggested that offspring of perversity cannot be a source of joy. During the menstrual period of the older queen, Ambika, Satyavati invited Vyasa to Ambika’s bedchamber. However, during sex with Vyasa, Ambika noticed his dark appearance and closed her eyes. Vyasa declared to Satyavti that due to Ambika’s cruelty, her son would be blind (but strong) and have a hundred sons – later known as Kauravas (descendants of Kuru). Satyavati considered such an heir to be an unworthy king, so she asked Vyasa to have niyoga with her other daughter-in-law. During their niyoga, Ambalika fell pale due to Vyasa’s grim appearance. As the result the child would be wan, Vyasa told his mother, who begged for another child. In due course, the blind Dhritarashtra and the pale Pandu were born. Satyavati again invited Vyasa to Ambika’s bedchamber; she remembered Vyasa’s grim appearance (and repulsive odour), and substituted a Shudra (lowest caste) maid in her place. The maid respected the sage and was not afraid of him, and Vyasa thus blessed her; her son would be the most intelligent man, and she would no longer be a slave. In the epic Mahabharata, Bhishma was well known for his pledge of celibacy. The eighth son of Kuru King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga Bheeshma was blessed with wish-long life and was related to both the Pandava and the Kaurava. He was an unparalleled archer and warrior of his time. He was a mighty atimaharathi, capable of defeating 12 maharathis at once. He also handed down the Vishnu Sahasranama to Yudhishthira when he was on his death bed (of arrows) in the battle of Kurukshetra. The legend behind Bhishma’s birth is as follows — once the eight Vasus (“Ashtavasus”) visited Vashishta’s ashram accompanied by their wives. One of the wives took a fancy to Kamadhenu, Vashishta’s wish-bearing cow and asked her husband Prabhasa to steal it from Vashishta. Prabhasa then stole the cow with the help of the others who were all consequently cursed by Vashishta to be born in the world of humans. Upon the Vasus appealing to Vashishta’s mercy, the seven Vasus who had assisted in stealing Kamadhenu had their curse mitigated such that they would be liberated from their human birth as soon as they were born; however, Prabhasa being protagonist of the theft, was cursed to endure a longer life on the earth. The curse, however is softened to the extent that he would be one of the most illustrious men of his time. It was this Prabhasa who took birth as Bhishma. After Devavrata was born, his mother Ganga took him to different realms, where he was brought up and trained by many eminent sages (Mahabharata Shanti Parva, section 38). Bhishma means He of the terrible oath, referring to his vow of lifelong celibacy. Originally named Devavratha, he became known as Bhishma after he took the bhishama pratigya (‘terrible oath’) — the vow of lifelong celibacy and of service to whomever sat on the throne of his father (the throne of Hastinapur). He took this oath so that his father, Shantanu could marry a fisherwoman Satyavati — Satyavati’s father had refused to give his daughter’s hand to Shantanu on the grounds that his daughter’s children would never be rulers. This made Shantanu despondent, and upon discovering the reason for his father’s despondency, Devavratha sought out the girl’s father and promised him that he would never stake a claim to the throne, implying that the child born to Shantanu and Satyavati would become the ruler after Shantanu. At this, Satyavati’s father retorted that even if Devavratha gave up his claim to the throne, his (Devavratha’s) children would still claim the throne. Devavratha then took the vow of lifelong celibacy, thus sacrificing his ‘crown-prince’ title and denying himself the pleasures of conjugal love. This gave him immediate recognition among the gods. His father granted him the boon of Ichcha Mrityu (control over his own death — he could choose the time of his death, making him immortal till his chosen time of death, instead of completely immortal which would have been an even more severe curse and cause of suffering). Criticism of King Shantanu from his subjects as to why he removed Bhishma from the title of the crown prince, as he was so capable, abounded. There was worry about the nobility of Shantanu’s unborn children, now promised the throne. Hearing this, Bhishma said it was his decision and his father should not be blamed as Shantanu had never promised anything to Satyavati’s father. Films His life has been made into many films in different Indian languages. The first silent film was made in 1922. During the talkie period, the first film was made in Hindi (1937). It was followed by a Bengali film in 1942 directed by Jyotish Bannerjee. Jahar Ganguli played the title role. In Telugu cinema, two films were made. The first film on Bhishma was made in 1944 directed by Chitrapu Narayana Rao. Jandhyala Gourinatha Sastry played the role of Bhishma. B. A. Subba Rao made a film in 1962 titled Bhishma. We often think about the reason why God sent us here. What do the Gods want to achieve by placing humans on Earth? The Garuda Purana states that we are here so that our souls can be judged. Accordingly, their position in the universe will get to determine. For every wrong deed committed, there is a specific punishment mentioned. The delivery of punishment is not during the lifecycle. Instead, the soul has to wait for the final judgement by Lord Yamraj. The soul will do its time in hell if it has to serve a sentence. Moreover, the soul is sent to the Earth so that it can redeem its sins of previous birth. Therefore, the soul is stuck in a vicious cycle where it can attain Moksha only when it has balanced its sins. Hence, all the souls strive to achieve freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth. The Garuda Purana in Telugu and other languages mentions that life is a precious gift, and every action must be taken diligently and in the best interest of society. What is human race? The Garuda Purana is one of eighteen Mahāpurāṇa genre of texts in Hinduism. The Padma Purana categorizes the Garuda Purana, along with itself, Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana, as a Sattva Purana (a purana which represents goodness and purity). In the epic Mahabharata, Shantanu was a Kuru king of Hastinapura. He was a descendant of the Bharata race, of the lunar dynasty and great-grandfather of the Pandavas and Kauravas. He was the youngest son of King Pratipa of Hastinapura and had been born in the latter’s old age. The eldest son Devapi had leprosy and gave up his inheritance to become a hermit. The middle son Bahlika (or Vahlika) abandoned his paternal kingdom and started living with his maternal uncle in Balkh and inherited the kingdom from him. Shantanu became the king of Hastinapura by default. Etymology Shantanu or Santanu is derived from Sanskrit meaning “Wholesome”. He is best known for being the father of Bhishma, one of the mightiest warriors of all time. Shantanu saw a beautiful woman on the banks of the river Ganges (Ganga) and asked her to marry him. She agreed but with one condition: that Shantanu would not ask any questions about her actions. They married and she later gave birth to a son. But she drowned the child. Shantanu could not ask her the reason, because of his promise, lest she would leave him. One by one, seven sons were born to them and were drowned by Ganga. When Ganga was about to drown the eighth son, Shantanu, devastated, could not restrain himself and confronted her. Finally, Ganga explained to King Shantanu about Brahma’s curse given to Mahabhisha and her. Then she told him that their eight children were Eight Vasus who were cursed by Vasishtha to be born on earth as mortal humans however when they pacified him, he limited his curse and told them that they would be freed from this curse within a year of their birth as humans. So she released the seven of them from this life by drowning them all. However the Vasu Dyaus was cursed to live a long life and to never have a wife or have children. But the sage also gave a boon to him that he would be virtuous, conversant with all the holy scriptures and will be an obedient son to his father. that she will take him to the heavens to train him properly for the King’s throne and status. With these words she disappeared along with the child while Shantanu was struck with grief thinking about spending the rest of his life without her. Shantanu, filled with grief from the loss of his wife and son, began to practise Brahmacharya and ruled his kingdom extremely well. By merely adopting virtuous behavior, Shantanu was easily able to conquer the entire world without lifting weapons. All the kings declared Shantanu as Emperor and his reign was a peaceful one. Shantanu gave up hunting and gained popularity from his subjects. One day, while walking along the banks of the Ganga, Shantanu saw that the river had become shallow. While searching for the cause of this phenomenon, he came across a handsome young boy who had checked the river’s flow with his celestial weapon. The young boy was his son however he didn’t recognize this because of only having seen him for a few moments after his birth. The boy recognized that he was his father however didn’t reveal it to him instead disappearing in his very sight using his powers of illusion. Shantanu upon seeing this wondered whether the boy was actually his son and called upon Ganga to show the boy to him. Ganga thus appeared. She then revealed to him that the boy was actually his son Devavrata and that he was taught the knowledge of the holy scriptures by the sage Vasishtha and the art of warfare by Parshurama. After revealing the truth about Devavrata she told Shantanu to take him back with to Hastinapura. Upon reaching the capital Shantanu crowned Devavrata as the heir-apparent to the throne. While searching for the cause of the scent, he came across Satyavati from whom the smell of scent was coming. Mahabharatam WebSeries Episode-8 (History of Emperor Bharata) | సంపూర్ణ మహాభారతం భాగం-8 (భరతుడి చరిత్ర) | Maheedhar’s Planet Leaf (MPlanetLeaf) In Hindu scriptures, Bharata is an emperor and the founder of the Bhaarata dynasty and thus an ancestor of the Pandavas and the Kauravas in the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. Though the Bhaaratas are a prominent community in the Rigveda, the story of Bharata is first told in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharatha, wherein he is the son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala. The story of his parents and his birth is also related in Kalidasa’s famous play Abhijnaanashaakuntala. King Dushyanta first encountered Shakuntala while travelling through the forest with his army. He was pursuing a male deer wounded by his weapon. Shakuntala and Dushyanta fell in love with each other and got married as per Gandharva marriage system. Before returning to his kingdom, Dushyanta gave his personal royal ring to Shakuntala as a symbol of his promise to return and bring her to his palace. Shakuntala spent much time dreaming of her new husband and was often distracted by her daydreams. One day, a powerful rishi, Durvasa, came to the ashrama but, lost in her thoughts about Dushyanta, Shakuntala failed to greet him properly. Incensed by this slight, the rishi cursed Shakuntala, saying that the person she was dreaming of would forget about her altogether. As he departed in a rage, one of Shakuntala’s friends quickly explained to him the reason for her friend’s distraction. The rishi, realizing that his extreme wrath was not warranted, modified his curse saying that the person who had forgotten Shakuntala would remember everything again if she showed him a personal token that had been given to her. Time passed, and Shakuntala, wondering why Dushyanta did not return for her, finally set out for the capital city with her foster father and some of her companions. On the way, they had to cross a river by a canoe ferry and, seduced by the deep blue waters of the river, Shakuntala ran her fingers through the water. Her ring (Dushyanta’s ring) slipped off her finger without her realizing it. Arriving at Dushyanta’s court, Shakuntala was hurt and surprised when her husband did not recognize her, nor recollected anything about her. She tried to remind him that she was his wife but without the ring, Dushyanta did not recognize her… According to the Mahabharata (Adi Parva), Bharata was the son of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala and thus a descendant of the Lunar dynasty of the Kshatriya Varna. He was originally named Sarvadamana (“the subduer of all”); the Mahabharata traces the events in his life by which he came to be known as Bharata (“the cherished”). Emperor Bharata gave his name to the dynasty of which he was the founder. It was in the Bharatas’ dynasty that later the Pandavas of epic Mahabharata were born. Bharata performed many sacrifices and Sage Kanva was the chief priest at those sacrifices. Bharata performed a hundred Horse sacrifices on the banks of the Yamuna, three hundred on the banks of Saraswati and four hundred on the banks of the Ganga. He again performed a thousand Horse sacrifices and a hundred Rajasuya. He also conducted sacrifices such as Agnishtoma, Atiratra, Uktha and Viswajit. He was the husband of Shakuntala and the father of the Emperor Bharatha. He appears in the Mahabarata and in Kalidasa’s play The Recognition of Sakuntala (c. 300 CE). His name is also transliterated as Dusyanta or Dushyant, and means “Destroyer of Evil” in Sanskrit. According to the Mahabharata, Dushyanta is the son of Ilina and Rathantara. He was king of Hastinapur and ancestor of the Kuru dynasty. Dushyant met his wife Shakuntala while on an excursion from his kingdom at the hermitage of sage Kanva. Dushyanta and Sakuntala had a son named Bharata who went on to become Emperor Bharata. The story of Dushyanta’s encounter, marriage, separation and reunion with his queen, Shakuntala, has been immortalized in the Mahabharata and in The Recognition of Shakuntala by the great Sanskrit poet Kalidas. Dushyant meets Shakuntala, who is a daughter of Vishvamitra and Menaka, while on an excursion from his kingdom. Depending on the source, Dushyant is either the crown prince, or he is waiting to win back his kingdom from an enemy. Either way, he sees Shakuntala in an ashram (hermitage) of Rishi Kanva and falls in love. He and Shakuntala have a gandharva marriage there. Having to leave after some time, Dushyant gives Shakuntala a royal ring as a sign of their love, promising her that he will come to her. But when Dushyanth becomes king, he becomes too absorbed for many years in affairs of state. Shakuntala waits and despairs. One day, sage Durvasa visits the hermitage, but Shakuntala, who is too absorbed in her love for Dushyantha, forgets to serve him food. In a fit of anger, sage Durvasa curses her, saying that the person she is thinking about will forget her. A shocked Shakuntala begs for forgiveness and the sage, after recollecting his calm, assures her that the person will remember her again when she shows some proof of their acquaintance. So, Shakuntala sets off to the capital, Hastinapur, to remind Dushyant of their past love. An accident occurs by which a fish consumes the royal ring, leaving Shakuntala with no formidable proof. Dushyanta does not recollect Shakuntala, but his memory and love are rekindled when a sage (not the same who cursed Shakuntala) recovers the ring and brings it to the court. Dushyanta weds Shakuntala, who becomes his queen and mother of his son, Bharata. A different version of the story involves Shakuntala’s father, the great and legendary sage Vishwamitra (Kaushika) also transliterated as Brahmarshi Vishwamitra, who is said to have bowed his head to none. Dushyant’s forgetting of Shakuntala was a device invented by the other sages, including Vashishta, to make Vishvamitra bow. For the sake of his daughter the great sage is said to have bowed before the great king Dushyant to persuade him to accept his daughter. The sages, delighted, immediately brought the memory of Shakuntala into the mind of Dushyant. Brahmarshi Vishvamitra is one of the most venerated rishis or sages of ancient India. He is also credited as the author of most of Mandala 3 of the Rigveda, including Gayatri Mantra. The Puranas mention that only 24 rishis since antiquity have understood the whole meaning of and thus wielded the whole power of Gayatri Mantra. Vishvamitra is supposed to be the first, and Yajnavalkya the last. According to many literary sources, Dushyanta was the father of Emperor Bharata, who is generally credited with uniting India under his rule. According to the Mahabharata Adiparva, Bharata was born while Shakuntala awaited Dushyanta at her hermitage. A fisherman catches the same fish who had consumed the ring. He was one of the ancestors of Pandavas. He had five brothers: Yati, Samyati, Ayati, Viyati and Kriti, although they were the children of Virajas, daughter of the Pitris. Yayati had conquered the whole world and was the Chakravartin Samrat (Universal Monarch or World Emperor). He marries Devayani and takes Sharmishtha, daughter of king Vrishparva and maid of Devayani as his mistress on her request. Devayani was the daughter of Shukracharya, the priest of the Asuras (the demons). After hearing of his relationship with Sharmishtha, Devayani complains to her father Shukracharya, who in turn curses Yayati to old age in the prime of life, but later allows him to exchange it with his son, Kuru. His story finds mention in the Mahabharat – Adi Parva and also Bhagavata Purana. Yayati’s father, Nahusha is transformed into a python by a curse uttered by the sages as punishment for his arrogance. Yayati’s elder brother, Yati, is initially given the kingdom, but turns it down and instead becomes an ascetic. Yayati then becomes king in his place and prospers so greatly that he is able to conquer the whole world. He appoints his four younger brothers to rule the world’s cardinal directions… Some days later Devayani goes on a picnic in the forest with her servants (including Sharmishtha). There she again meets Yayati, who is out hunting. Yayati finds himself attracted by Sharmishtha’s beauty, asks Devayani about her. Devayani observed this, introduced Sharmishtha as her slave and also claimed that he should become her husband as he has held her hand while helping her out of the well. Yayati fears Shukracharya, and tells Devayani that he will marry her only if his father agrees. Yayati presumed that it is not Dharma for a King to marry a Brahmin girl. This time she brings him to her father and tells him that she would like to marry Yayati. Shukracharya gives his consent and tells Yayati that he should take care of Sharmishtha too (as she is a princess, by birth) although he shouldn’t share bed with her. Yayati marries Sharmishtha and looks after her well. After some time Sharmishtha comes to Yayati and asks him to give her a son. He reluctantly agrees and they begin a physical relationship, in the hopes that she will conceive. In due course, Devayani gives birth to two sons Yadu and Turvasu while Sharmishtha gives birth to three sons Druhyu, Anu and Puru. Eventually Devayani learns of her husband’s affair with Sharmishtha and complains to her father. Enraged at his son-in-law’s disobedience, Shukracharya curses Yayati with premature old age in punishment for inflicting such pain upon his daughter. However he later relents a little, telling Yayati that if he can persuade one of his (Yayati ‘s) sons to swap ages with him he will be able to escape the curse and regain his lost youth for a while. Yayati asks his sons if one of them will give up his youth to rejuvenate his father, but all refuse except the youngest, Puru (one of his sons by Sharmishtha). Mahabharatam WebSeries Episode-5 (Story of Yayati) | సంపూర్ణ మహాభారతం భాగం-5 (యయాతి చరిత్ర) | M Planet Leaf Yayati was a Puranic king and the son of King Nahusha and his wife Ashokasundari, daughter of Sri Mahadeva (Lord Shiva) and Devi Parvati Mata. He was one of the ancestors of Pandavas. He had five brothers: Yati, Samyati, Ayati, Viyati and Kriti, although they were the children of Virajas, daughter of the Pitris. Yayati had conquered the whole world and was the Chakravartin Samrat (Universal Monarch or World Emperor). He marries Devayani and takes Sharmishtha, daughter of king Vrishparva and maid of Devayani as his mistress on her request. Devayani was the daughter of Shukracharya, the priest of the Asuras (the demons). After hearing of his relationship with Sharmishtha, Devayani complains to her father Shukracharya, who in turn curses Yayati to old age in the prime of life, but later allows him to exchange it with his son, Kuru. His story finds mention in the Mahabharat – Adi Parva and also Bhagavata Purana. Yayati’s father, Nahusha is transformed into a python by a curse uttered by the sages as punishment for his arrogance. Yayati’s elder brother, Yati, is initially given the kingdom, but turns it down and instead becomes an ascetic. Yayati then becomes king in his place and prospers so greatly that he is able to conquer the whole world. He appoints his four younger brothers to rule the world’s cardinal directions. One day Sharmishtha, daughter of the Danava king Vrishparva and Devayani, daughter of the Daitya sage Shukracharya, go with Sharmishtha’s retinue to bathe in a forest pool not far from their home. After bathing, Sharmishtha confuses Devayani’s sari with hers and puts it on instead. Devayani returns, scolds Sharmishtha for her mistake and belittles her with the jibe that she is the daughter of Shukracharya (Shukracharya being a sage and high priest and indeed the guru of all the Asuras – no mere employee) as Vrishparva’s and their Kingdom lives on his blessings. This slur on herself and her father Vrishparva infuriates Sharmishtha with the help of her servants throws the naked Devayani into a well and leaves the forest with her retinue. Later Yayati, son of Nahusha, comes to the well for water and helps Devayani to climb out of it. Devayani resolves to make Sharmishtha her servant in revenge for trying to kill her by throwing her into the well. Sharmishtha’s father, Vrishparva agrees to this, since he fears that the continued security of his kingdom would be in doubt without the sage counsel of Devayani’s father Shukracharya. Sharmishtha also agrees to this to save the kingdom and becomes Devayani’s maidservant. Some days later Devayani goes on a picnic in the forest with her servants (including Sharmishtha). There she again meets Yayati, who is out hunting. Yayati finds himself attracted by Sharmishtha’s beauty, asks Devayani about her. Devayani observed this, introduced Sharmishtha as her slave and also claimed that he should become her husband as he has held her hand while helping her out of the well. Yayati fears Shukracharya, and tells Devayani that he will marry her only if his father agrees. Yayati presumed that it is not Dharma for a King to marry a Brahmin girl. This time she brings him to her father and tells him that she would like to marry Yayati. Shukracharya gives his consent and tells Yayati that he should take care of Sharmishtha too (as she is a princess, by birth) although he shouldn’t share bed with her. Yayati marries Sharmishtha and looks after her well. After some time Sharmishtha comes to Yayati and asks him to give her a son. He refuses and says that, if he were to do so, he could not face the wrath of Shukracharya. Nevertheless, Sharmishtha manages finally to convince him, saying that it would be against Dharma if he were to refuse her request, as she is desperate to have a child. Seeing the plight of her father King Vrisparva, Sharmistha sacrifices her royal status and agrees to take up the role of a handmaiden to Devayani to protect the kingdom. Devayani comes back to capital along with her father and enjoys the servitude of Sharmistha. In this episode of Mahabharata, everything is explained in easy and understandable Telugu. The eighth son of Kuru King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga Bheeshma was blessed with wish-long life and was related to both the Pandava and the Kaurava. He was an unparalleled archer and warrior of his time. He was a mighty atimaharathi, capable of defeating 12 maharathis at once. He also handed down the Vishnu Sahasranama to Yudhishthira when he was on his death bed (of arrows) in the battle of Kurukshetra. The legend behind Bhishma&#39;s birth is as follows — once the eight Vasus ("Ashtavasus") visited Vashishta&#39;s ashram accompanied by their wives. One of the wives took a fancy to Kamadhenu, Vashishta&#39;s wish-bearing cow and asked her husband Prabhasa to steal it from Vashishta. Prabhasa then stole the cow with the help of the others who were all consequently cursed by Vashishta to be born in the world of humans. Upon the Vasus appealing to Vashishta&#39;s mercy, the seven Vasus who had assisted in stealing Kamadhenu had their curse mitigated such that they would be liberated from their human birth as soon as they were born; however, Prabhasa being protagonist of the theft, was cursed to endure a longer life on the earth. The curse, however is softened to the extent that he would be one of the most illustrious men of his time. It was this Prabhasa who took birth as Bhishma. Bhishma means He of the terrible oath, referring to his vow of lifelong celibacy. Originally named Devavratha, he became known as Bhishma after he took the bhishama pratigya (&#39;terrible oath&#39;) — the vow of lifelong celibacy and of service to whomever sat on the throne of his father (the throne of Hastinapur). He took this oath so that his father, Shantanu could marry a fisherwoman Satyavati — Satyavati&#39;s father had refused to give his daughter&#39;s hand to Shantanu on the grounds that his daughter&#39;s children would never be rulers. This made Shantanu despondent, and upon discovering the reason for his father&#39;s despondency, Devavratha sought out the girl&#39;s father and promised him that he would never stake a claim to the throne, implying that the child born to Shantanu and Satyavati would become the ruler after Shantanu. At this, Satyavati&#39;s father retorted that even if Devavratha gave up his claim to the throne, his (Devavratha&#39;s) children would still claim the throne. Devavratha then took the vow of lifelong celibacy, thus sacrificing his &#39;crown-prince&#39; title and denying himself the pleasures of conjugal love. This gave him immediate recognition among the gods. His father granted him the boon of Ichcha Mrityu (control over his own death — he could choose the time of his death, making him immortal till his chosen time of death, instead of completely immortal which would have been an even more severe curse and cause of suffering). Films His life has been made into many films in different Indian languages. The first silent film was made in 1922. During the talkie period, the first film was made in Hindi (1937). It was followed by a Bengali film in 1942 directed by Jyotish Bannerjee. Jahar Ganguli played the title role. In Telugu cinema, two films were made. The first film on Bhishma was made in 1944 directed by Chitrapu Narayana Rao. Jandhyala Gourinatha Sastry played the role of Bhishma. B. A. Subba Rao made a film in 1962 titled Bhishma. The title role was played by N. T. Rama Rao. Bhishma&#39;s character was played by Mukesh Khanna in the B.R. Chopra&#39;s Mahabharat, one of the most successful Hindi television series. Aarav Chowdhary also played the role of Bhishma in Star Plus&#39; Mahabharat. Among them we have been listening about a number of saints and sages who have done such a great piece of work to build the spirituality of the universe. One was Maharishi Ved Vyasa, a devine soul who created the epic called Mahabharata. Today, lets learn the story of Vyasa’s birth. How he came into the existence? How he got his name? What was the purpose of his birth? Watch the video to find out… Once upon a time in the existence, there was a sage called Maharishi Parashara. He was the author of the first ever Puran- The Vishnu Puran. Once he was travelling near the river Yamuna, he saw a young lady who was from the family of fisherman and helped the travelers to cross the river in her wooden boat. The sage got attracted to the girl. He went towards the girl and asked her to take him across the river, she paddled on. In the mid of the river, Parashara grabed her hand and told her about his feeling and asked her to make love. Her name was Satyawati also known as Matsyagandha due the fishy smell that came out of her body. Satyawati hesitated but after his repeated request she agreed for the same. However, she had some conditions for the sage. The first condition – Satyawati said that when the approach the bank and get involved, no one shall see them. Parashara agreed and spoke some Mantra and soon an island appeared and the surrounding became foggy around them. The second condition – Satyawati asked that the fishy smell from her body should turn into fragrance and her virginity shall be maintained even after this togetherness. The sage agreed and pronounced the mantras to turn the fishy smell to a beautiful fragrance and gave the boon that her virginity shall be maintained even after their relationship. Then she asked him to give her a boon that her child shall be knowledgeable and learned and a big sage himself not a fisherman instead. The sage welcomed this condition too and said TATHASTU. The two then went on to make love on the foggy island. The sage then left the island. On the same day Devi Satyavati gave birth to a boy who was later known as Veda Vyasa. He was dark so he got his name Krishna and since he was born on an island (dwip), he was named Dvaipayana. Well, the boy was Vyasa, full name being Krishna Dvaipayana Veda Vyasa. He went for a strong Tap (tenacity) in search of the purpose of his life on one condition that whenever his mother would remember him and call him, he shall report. He was believed to be a part of Lord Vishnu. Ved Vyasa only was the creator, the author of the great epic of all time, the Mahabharata. In fact, Ved Vyasa was the great grandfather of Kauravas and Pandavas. According to the Mahābhārata itself, the tale is extended from a shorter version of 24,000 verses called simply Bhārata. The Mahābhārata is the longest epic poem known and has been described as “the longest poem ever written”. Its longest version consists of over 100,000 śloka or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages. About 1.8 million words in total, the Mahābhārata is roughly ten times the length of the Iliad and the Odyssey combined, or about four times the length of the Rāmāyaṇa. W. J. Johnson has compared the importance of the Mahābhārata in the context of world civilization to that of the Bible, the works of Shakespeare, the works of Homer, Greek drama, or the Qur’an. The epic is traditionally ascribed to the sage Vyāsa, who is also a major character in the epic. Vyāsa described it as being itihāsa (history). He also describes the Guru-shishya parampara, which traces all great teachers and their students of the Vedic times. The first section of the Mahābhārata states that it was Gaṇeśa who wrote down the text to Vyasa’s dictation. The epic employs the story within a story structure, otherwise known as frametales, popular in many Indian religious and non-religious works. It is first recited at Takshashila by the sage Vaiśampāyana, a disciple of Vyāsa, to the King Janamejaya who is the great-grandson of the Pāṇḍava prince Arjuna. The story is then recited again by a professional storyteller named Ugraśrava Sauti, many years later, to an assemblage of sages performing the 12-year sacrifice for the king Saunaka Kulapati in the Naimiśa Forest. The text has been described by some early 20th-century western Indologists as unstructured and chaotic. Hermann Oldenberg supposed that the original poem must once have carried an immense “tragic force” but dismissed the full text as a “horrible chaos.” Moritz Winternitz (Geschichte der indischen Literatur 1909) considered that “only unpoetical theologists and clumsy scribes” could have lumped the parts of disparate origin into an unordered whole. The Garuda Purana is one of 18 Mahāpurāṇ of texts in Hinduism. It is a part of Vaishnavism literature corpus, primarily centering around Hindu god Vishnu. Composed in Sanskrit, the earliest version of the text may have been composed in the first millennium BCE, but it was likely expanded and changed over a long period of time. The Garuda Purana text is known in many versions, contains 15000+ verses. Its chapters encyclopedically deal with a highly diverse collection of topics. The text contains cosmology, mythology, relationship between gods, ethics, good versus evil, various schools of Hindu philosophies, the theory of Yoga, the theory of "heaven and hell" with "karma and rebirth", ancestral rites and soteriology, rivers and geography, types of minerals and stones, testing methods for gems for their quality, listing of plants and herbs, various diseases and their symptoms, various medicines, aphrodisiacs, prophylactics, Hindu calendar and its basis, astronomy, moon, planets, astrology, architecture, building home, essential features of a Hindu temple, rites of passage, charity and gift making, economy, thrift, duties of a king, politics, state officials and their roles and how to appoint them, genre of literature, rules of grammar, and other topics. The final chapters discuss how to practice Yoga (Samkhya and Advaita types), personal development and the benefits of self-knowledge. The Padma Purana categorizes the Purana, along with itself, Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana, as a Sattva Purana (a purana which represents goodness and purity). The text, like all Mahapuranas, is attributed to sage Veda Vyāsa in the Hindu tradition. The Garuda Purana is a Vaishnava Purana and has, according to the tradition, 19,000 shlokas (verses). However, the manuscripts that have survived into the modern era have preserved about eight thousand verses. These are divided into two parts, a Purva Khanda (early section) and an Uttara Khanda (later section). The Purva Khanda contains about 229 chapters, but in some versions of the text this section has between 240–243 chapters. The Uttara Khanda varies between 34 and 49 chapters.
