The Copa Libertadores kicked off its knockout stage this week and South America's premier club tournament didn't quite erupt into action.  Maybe the Copa America has drained the legs, maybe in Brazil they're just playing too much football [is that possible?] or maybe we just had a quiet week.  Either way, Dave and Ollie talk about all the action from the week just gone as the elite on the continent look to book a place in the final eight of the competition.

#44 - Rough Start To The Round Of 16

Italy vs England & Argentina vs Brazil? Naaaah... Ollie and Dave sidestepped the two big weekend blockbusters to focus on all things CONMEBOL Libertadores.  We previewed the R16 1st leg clashes, Borre's departure, the favourites, the underdogs and the possibility of a Boca/River quarter-final. Finally the big question...how on EARTH are red hot Palmeiras 6/1 to lift the trophy? (Ollie was dialling in from a far flung Eastern European work location with patchy wifi, so forgive the odd second or two of us chatting over each other)

Ollie and Dave sit down to look ahead to the Copa America that starts this weekend but, as you'd expect, there's a Copa Libertadores twist as they run through the squads of Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and the rest to see which players playing in the Libertadores could make a impact in the tournament. So will the boys from Boca [not many of them], River, Palmeiras, Flamengo etc provide some samba soccer in Brazil this summer, or will some see themselves playing flat football?   Hear all the discussion here.

The last 16 draws have been made!  In the Libertadores; Can Cuca oust Boca again? And are we heading for a Flamengo vs Palmeiras final?  The Sudamericana produced a draw to saviour with Nacional & Peñarol facing off on the continental stage....the biggest rivalry in Uruguayan football. Not to mention LDU Quito vs Gremio and a host of other crackers.  Ties to be played in July. Plenty more WW pods between now & then.  

#41 - The Last 16 Draws - Sudamericana > Libertadores?

With the group stages wrapped up, the line-up for the last 16 of the CONMEBOL Libertadores is now complete.  There was drama in Paraguay as Olimpia scored six to progress, River got a little lucky & the Brazilians continued to batter everyone.  We discussed our player/coach of the group stages and is 6/1 for Palmeiras to defend the trophy the best bet of 2021...

Matchday five from the Group Stage is in the books but rather than look back at Gremio's big win against Aragua or Peñarol fumbling their chance to lock up top spot in their group, Dave and Ollie look ahead to the final group games and ask who is going through as almost every game this coming week could play a role in deciding who makes it to the knockout stages.

South America sees its soccer start to sizzle less with continental flare, but grit and tension takes over as the Libertadores Group Stage gets serious.   Boca Juniors are beaten by Santos, Sao Paulo are suffocated by Rentistas and even the all powerful Palmeiras are prevented from banging the goals in.  As the football gets nervy, the big guns look to protect their group standings, while the lesser sides see a path to Gloria Eterna.  Ollie and Dave break down all the action from week four go the groups on the podcast
