Sometimes we talk about the Gospel’s power to help us live better lives. Other times we may talk about the blessing of having Jesus to help us with our problems. But at its core, the Gospel is not about making bad people good. In Ephesians 2:1-5 it says we were dead in our sins, yet God made us alive through Jesus. We sometimes celebrate ourselves and, in the process, lose sight of the goal. Have you ever heart Aesop’s fable about The Hare and the Tortoise? It’s about a race between a tortoise and a hare and it ends with the persistent turtle beating the over-confident rabbit. As we begin to explore today’s text we’re going to see that Ezekiel addresses a prideful king who was counting his victories only to discover that he had no reason to confidently claim to be the eternal king. Everyone needs encouragement. But encouragement needs to reflect truth. We can do more harm than good by creating a false reality in the name of hope. This can also happen when we cross the line between hope and wishing or if we confuse those two things. The Bible describes hope as a confident assurance based on God’s promises. Today we begin our study of the Book of Ezekiel. In 597 BC, during the second siege of Judah, the Babylonians took exiles from Judah. Ezekiel was among those seized and sent to Babylon. Even though His people were dispersed, the Lord would not forsake them. He used Ezekiel to let the people of Israel know He was not finished with them. So often at Christmas people celebrate the story of the birth of Jesus, attend nativity plays, sing carols and enjoy the festivities. But they miss out on the real significance of all of it. Jesus said in John 10:10 that He came to give life and to give it in all its fullness. We were all created for a purpose and we can discover that purpose through knowing Jesus. Dec 19– The Advent of Christ, Pt 4 – Exceeding Great Joy

It is difficult to imagine a life without Christ once we have experienced His love, but there are many people around us who have never allowed Christ’s love and forgiveness to be born in their hearts. Could it be that we need to be reminded that we are called to be expressions of that love to them? A light that points the way to Christ? A “fleshed-out” example of unconditional acceptance?
