Dr. Kevin Southerland (@kwsoutherland) is an assistant professor of surgery at Duke.  He is a co-investigator of an NIH U01 grant to study the 4D nucleome of muscle regeneration in ischemia-induced damage and repair and was selected to be the 2021 Wylie Scholar to study transcriptional dynamics and heterogeneity of macrophages in CLTI. Dr. Karen Ho is the John Marquardt Clinical Research Professor of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern.  She was recently awarded an R01 grant from the NHLBI to study the meta-organismal pathways that impact susceptibility to arterial restenosis after vascular surgery. Getting Started with Basic Science in Vascular Surgery

Matt Chia and Andy Lazar sit down with Drs. Leila Mureebe, Jeff Siracuse, and Philip Goodney for a panel discussion introducing the VQI and some practical tips on getting started with vascular health services research. Dr. Leila Mureebe (@leils) is an associate professor of surgery in the division of vascular and endovascular surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine.  She completed her medical degree and general surgery residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, a vascular research fellowship at Harvard Longwood, and her vascular surgery fellowship at Yale.  She also holds dual master’s degrees in public health from the UNC and in management and clinical informatics from Duke. Dr. Jeff Siracuse is an associate professor of surgery and radiology at the Boston University School of Medicine.  He completed his medical degree at the New York Medical College, followed by a general surgery residency at Beth Israel Deaconess, a vascular research fellowship at Harvard Longwood, and a vascular surgery fellowship at the New York-Presbyterian programs.  He also holds an MBA from Boston University and has extensive experience with the VQI data, including being the medical director and regional RAC chair for the Vascular Study Group of New England. Dr. Philip Goodney is a professor of surgery and the associate chair for research at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical center.  He received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut, followed by a general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship at Dartmouth.  He completed a special fellowship in outcomes research with the VA Outcomes Group in White River Junction, Vermont, while also receiving a Master’s Degree in Evaluative Clinical Sciences.  Among the many key positions he holds in our field, he is the current chair for the national VQI Research Advisory Committee or RAC. Getting Started using the VQI for Research

We are very excited to bring you our new series on Landmark Papers in Vascular Surgery!  We are proud to start off with the IMPROVE trial, and for that we welcome Professor Janet Powell, Professor of Vascular Biology & Medicine at Imperial College, London and Chief Investigator of the IMPROVE Trial.  Professor Powell studied medicine in the USA (after obtaining a PhD in Biophysics in London), before returning to Britain where she completed clinical training in pathology, specialising in cardiovascular risk. Initially her research interests were confined to the laboratory but soon extended from bench (vascular biology) to bedside (clinical trials). She has been integral to all of the key UK trials in abdominal aortic aneurysm management, including the UK Small Aneurysms Trial, the EVAR-1 and EVAR-2 trials and of course, the IMPROVE Trial.  In recognition of her outstanding contribution to research in vascular surgery, she was recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland Annual Scientific Meeting in 2012, and is honoured with a named lectureship at the annual European Society of Vascular Surgery conference, called the Janet Powell Lecture in Evidence-Based Vascular Surgery.   The IMPROVE Trial is the “Immediate Management of Patients with Rupture: Open Versus Endovascular Repair,” originally published in the British Medical Journal in 2014. Landmark Papers - IMPROVE - Professor Janet Powell

In this episode, Imani and Reginald discuss with Dr. Backhus and Dr. Goodney the historical implications of the longstanding poor relationship between the Black community and the medical community, and its effect on current practices and patient care in vascular surgery. They also explore the role of research in creating demonstrable changes in practice to aid in ameliorating this relationship. Leah Backhus, MD, MPH, FACS (@leahbackhusmd) practices at Stanford Hospital and is Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the VA Palo Alto, where she focuses on thoracic oncology and minimally invasive surgical techniques. She is also Co-Director of the Thoracic Surgery Clinical Research Program and has grant funding through the Veterans Affairs Administration and NIH. Her current research interests are in imaging surveillance following treatment for lung cancer and cancer survivorship. She is a member of the National Lung Cancer Roundtable of the American Cancer Society serving as Chair of the Task Group on Lung Cancer in Women. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. As an educator, Dr. Backhus is the Associate Program Director for the Thoracic Track Residency and is the Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery.  Phillip Goodney MD, MS (@DartmthSrgHSR) is a vascular surgeon, health services researcher, Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery, Director of the Center for the Evaluation of Surgical Care at Dartmouth (CESC), and Co-Director of the VA Outcomes Group at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Society for Vascular Surgery. This year's Vascular Annual Meeting will also be a very welcome return to in-person meetings after the pandemic.  Sharif and Fanny chat with the co-Chairs of the Program Committee for the VAM, Dr. Andy Schanzer and Dr. Matt Eagleton, to give us a preview. Dr. Andres Schanzer is a Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center and University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a secondary appointment as Professor of Quantitative Health Sciences.  He serves as the Director of the UMass Memorial Heart and Vascular Center and is the founding Director of the UMass Memorial Center for Complex Aortic Disease. He serves as the national principal investigator for the United States Fenestrated and Branched Endograft Research Consortium. This is his first year as co-Chair of the Program Committee for the Vascular Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Matthew Eagleton is the chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-director of the Fireman Vascular Center  leading a multi-disciplinary team interested in the management of vascular disease. Dr. Eagleton’s clinical and research interests are focused on the pathobiology and endovascular treatment options for complex aortic disease. Dr. Eagleton has served in a variety of national organizations including the Vascular and Endovascular Surgical Society and the Society for Vascular Surgery. This year, he is completing his tenure as Chair of the Program Committee for the Vascular Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Fanny Alie-Cusson is joining us today for her first interview as part of the Audible Bleeding family.
