Dr. Hammond is a professor of East Asian history and founder of the Confucius Institute at New Mexico St. University. He is also an activist for Pivot to Peace: https://peacepivot.org/.Dr. Hammond continues our deep dive into the rise of modern China since the 1949 Communist Revolution.  We tackle the years of the so-called Cultural Revolution, including its internal facets, flaws and unreported benefits. Importantly, it is a fair and nuanced assessment of an event that is universally demonized and exaggerated in the West. We then touch on China&apos;s guiding ideology as it has evolved over the years, and how the presidency of Xi Jinping has signaled a noticeable shift away from Capitalist oligarchic corruption and towards the Socialist vision that animated the revolution. China&apos;s anti-corruption campaign is working, and they are leading the world in the field of green and renewable technology. To save the planet, we as Americans need to work together with China whether we like it or not, and sabre rattling from the Pentagon is both unproductive and dangerous. Finally, Dr. Hammond recounts his experience at Kent St. University on the very day in 1970 when National Guardsmen opened fire on students, killing 4, paralyzing 1 and injuring many others. Fascinating to have a firsthand account of that horrible day. Since 2017, Dr. Hammond has been affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He has been a lecturer for the National Geographic Society and for the Smithsonian Institution. Finally, Dr. Hammond is a writer and activist for Pivot to Peace, a coalition of concerned Americans from all walks of life, who have come together in opposition to the dramatically increasing drive toward confrontation between the United States and China. Julian Assange is right now being psychologically and physically tortured (sleep deprivation chiefly) inside Belmarsh Prison in London. Julian has a partner and 2 young sons, and he is being kept away from this family. His health is suffering very badly. He is being destroyed before our eyes in real time, and for what? For having so badly bruised and embarrassed the ruling class, through his work at Wikileaks.  WikiLeaks is the most important publisher in our generation. When the world we inhabit is shrouded by darkness, with powerful forces operating in unison out of greed, survival, fear, and a mindset of scarcity and aggressivity, it is absolutely essential that we the people know and understand what the ruling class is up to.  We are being lied to and manipulated all the time. Without whistleblowers, leaks, and publications capable of publishing and willing to publish these leaks, we truly are lost to the insidious and hope-devouring world pf public relations campaigns, subtle media manipulation, brainwashing and propaganda. The ruling class cannot rule without the consent of the governed. To tacitly give consent unconsciously, without all the full info, and in fact based on curated manipulated info, to hand over consent in this way is to sleepwalk through history. The War on WikiLeaks and the Agony of Julian Assange

Your veggies this week tackle a massively important figure in both Congolese and Pan-African history and someone who is not taught nearly enough (or ever) in US public schools: Patrice Lumumba. Patrice Lumumba was a trade unionist who became the first ever Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo, serving from June until September of 1960. Lumumba was an African nationalist and Pan-Africanist, and his mission was to free the Congo from the yoke of hundreds of years of unspeakably brutal colonial and neo-colonial oppression. Belgium was truly horrific to the people of the Congo. Lumumba&apos;s political aims included nationalizing the massive mineral wealth of the Congo so that the government could provide basic universal services to the Congolese people, such as housing, healthcare, childcare and education. However, Patrice Lumumba, like so many great men who effectively oppose the status quo, had earned enemies, and some of these enemies were very powerful. Ultimately, the C.I.A. (Boooo), UK&apos;s MI6 (Boooo) and the Belgian Intelligence Services (Boooo) teamed up, and with U.N. complicity, had Lumumba arrested, tortured and executed by his political rivals. Patrice Lumumba: Champion of Congolese Independence and Martyr for the Pan-African Cause

Thank you for joining! For your tastefully seasoned veggies this week, we look at the case of Leonard Peltier, America&apos;s longest incarcerated political prisoner. Leonard is a leader of the American Indian Movement (AIM), an Indigenous Power organization that took over Alcatraz Island for19 months and occupied the site of the Wounded Knee massacre for 71 days. Leonard is innocent. He was targeted and persecuted by the FBI after two agents were fatally wounded in a shootout with AIM members on June 26, 1975 in Oglala, North Dakota. Leonard was present at the shootout, however he was helping to defend women and children, and he did not shoot the agents.  The bullets that killed the agents did not match the caliber of Leonard&apos;s rifle, and this evidence was withheld from court.The FBI tampered with evidence and intimidated witnesses in Leonard&apos;s case, some of whom were minors.Leonard is now 77 years old, and is health is suffering. It&apos;s time for Leonard to be set free, so he can live out the rest of his life at home and in peace, and with proper medical care. That means a tectonic shifting of material and spiritual, economic and psychological perspective. That means seeing the human family as one family, and seeing our resplendent planet Earth as our one and only home.What better way to begin this critical journey of ecological and societal transformation than to look back at a critically important and totally overlooked (in the West anyway) global conference that took place in April of 2010: The Cochabamba People&apos;s Agreement on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth. 192 countries (!!!) participated in this conference, which was held in a small town in a central Bolivian valley, at the feet of the eastern Andes.You haven&apos;t heard of this Conference because goings on in the Global South are systematically excluded from our eurocentric U.S. discourse, especially when they challenge capitalism.Thank you for listening and for being a part of the BNP! It is my absolute pleasure to welcome to the BNP, esteemed animator, director and storyboard artist Lubomir Arsov. Lubomir is a storyboard artist, character artist and an innovative, original animator, and he has worked for such major productions as The Ice Age and The Book of Life.I discovered Lubomir&apos;s animated short film In Shadow the other night while searching for trippy cartoons on the Interwebs, and it absolutely blew me away. In Shadow is a 13 minute long journey into the deep, dark underbelly and collective Unconscious of modern Western man. If that sounds like it would be gruesome and spooky, you&apos;d be correct. Arsov&apos;s work tackles the hidden secrets and buried taboos that in many ways define our modern world, even while they are largely ignored (at least consciously) by the masses. In Shadow drags this horrific darkness out into the light, and ultimately the film is an uplifting and confronting invitation to rehabilitate our darkest personal and societal shames, and to bathe our fears and hatred in the light of Infinite Awareness.  Definitely check it out!! On July 27, drone whistleblower Daniel Hale was sentenced to 45 months in prison, for the crime of telling the American people the truth about our drone program: that it kills 90% civilians. The U.S. drone program is terroristic, homicidal and cowardly. U.S. Air Force veteran Daniel Hale had the courage to stand up and inform us, at tremendous personal sacrifice. He is 33 years old, and he will be behind bars until May of 2025. Heroic Drone Whistleblower Daniel Hale

We also discuss the FDA&apos;s latest slimy, desperate, and dangerous move to attempt an international ban on the plant medicine kratom,  which helps millions of people around the world, and especially in the U.S., wean off prescription opiates. It helped me to defeat alcoholism. The American Kratom Association is filing a suit to extend the comment period for this proposed ban until later in August- find out more at protectkratom.org. It is the BNP after all so we rant a bit about Big Pharma, gentrification, autocracy, and other assorted cheerful topics relating to the overall tailspin of our late stage global capitalist system.
